Ian Miller Obituary (1959 – 2024) – Sydney, New South Wales – The Sydney Morning Herald

Hi,
We are raising money in relation to help cover expenses for the funeral / wake of retired police Sergeant Ian ‘Spud’ Miller, who tragically passed away 18 December 2024.
Sergeant Ian ‘Spud’ Miller, A.P.M, Registered number 18024 dedicated his life to serving and protecting the community. Born 19 February 1959, Ian joined the NSW Police Force at just 19 years old, beginning a remarkable career at Balmain / Leichhardt Local Area Command.
For 46 years, Ian stood on the frontline, showing unwavering courage, compassion, and commitment to the people he served. After retiring on 17 May 2024, Ian looked forward to spending time with family and enjoying the next chapter of his life. Tragically, on 18 December 2024, Ian passed away, leaving behind his wife, Susan Miller, son’s Scott Miller (serving officer) and Mitchell Miller. He was also a loving Grandfather to Sarah and Cameron Miller.
During his 46 years serving the people of New South Wales, Ian only took two sick day off work which shows his dedication and loyalty to the job he loved.
We are reaching out to Ian’s friends, colleagues, and community to help ease the financial burden on his family as they navigate the difficult task of laying him to rest and celebrating his life with the farewell he deserves. Any contribution, big or small, will go directly towards Ian’s funeral and wake, offering his family the space to grieve without added financial stress.
Thank you for your support in honouring a man who gave so much to so many.
Funeral will be held at Macquarie Park Crematorium, located at the corner of Delhi and Plassey Roads, North Ryde, NSW at 2pm on the 3 January 2025. Wake details TBC

December 2024

On September 27, at the NSW Police Wall of Remembrance, and all around the nation, National Police Remembrance Day was celebrated. Before the ceremony, our Chair Det Supt Donna McCarthy held a private Touchstone Ceremony, where members of the Zucchetti, Burns, and Schell families were presented with the Touchstones of their loved one.

At the service we honoured the names of NSW Police Force’s Sergeant Peter Thomas Stone, and SA Police’s Brevet Sergeant Jason Christopher Doig, who died while on duty, as well as the serving members of NSW Police who have passed away in the last 12 months:

Administrative Assistant Sivarajasingham Sivakumarasingham

Chief Inspector Matthew John Jeremiah Meares

Senior Constable Tanya Louise Smith

Detective Senior Constable Joanne Katherine Travers

Chief Inspector Daniel James Sykes

Sergeant Joshua David Kasun

Communications Officer Nicholas Jones

Sergeant Penny Ann Armstrong

Sergeant Leslie Michael Nugent

Senior Intelligence Analyst Fiona Taylor

Administrative Support Officer Ashley Linden Feeney

Probationary Constable Timothy John Wally Sheppard

General Administrative Support Officer Tammy Leigh Nagle

After the ceremony, three of our young Police Legatees – Oscar, Max, and Bronte – were presented with the Commissioner’s Scholarship. This award has the personal endorsement of the Commissioner, and each young Legatee receives money to support them in their chosen studies and endeavours.

A day of love and remembrance, a day of sadness and of promise.

Joanne Katherine TRAVERS AKA  Joanne Katherine ELDER

Joanne Katherine TRAVERS AKA  Joanne Katherine ELDER

Let me introduce you to our beautiful friend, Jo.
About 18 months ago, Jo started suffering from pains in her stomach that wouldn’t go away. Testing took place and it was discovered that Jo had bowel cancer that had already spread to her liver. Jo was found to have numerous lesions on her bowel and her liver was riddled with lesions.
Jo has been having extensive chemotherapy since this time and sadly, a recent scan has shown that her tumours have grown and the cancer has also spread to her lungs. Jo is not eligible for liver surgery, bowel surgery, or any type of transplant. It appears as though Jo’s body is no longer responding to chemotherapy. Jo has been informed that she is eligible to trial a brand new immunotherapy drug that has just been brought over from the USA. Unfortunately, this drug is not yet on our PBS and will cost $1900 per fortnight, capped at $27,000.
Regardless of this trial, Jo has been informed that her condition is completely incurable, and that the aim of any trial or medication from this point onwards is to solely prolong her life. About 18 months ago, Jo was given an estimated 3 years life expectancy. Jo has only just turned 40.
Jo is a mother of two beautiful beautiful boys ( aged 8 and 5 ), a wife to a supportive, loving husband and a friend to so many people. She has served the NSW state as a dedicated police officer and Detective over her 20-year policing career. Her shock diagnosis and cancer treatment has taken an enormous toll on her and her family. Despite all of this, Jo has remained so infectiously positive and upbeat which has been an inspiration to us all.
We recently held a fundraising event to raise money for Jo and her family to help make special memories for them. We are now trying to continue our fundraising efforts to raise enough money to cover her ongoing treatment and ease the financial pressure on Jo and her family. We would love Jo to spend as much precious, quality time with her boys as she can.
Thank you for your love and support. x

Childrens Cancer Institute – Great Cop Drop

Childrens Cancer Institute – Great Cop Drop

Dear All,

This post is shared on behalf of the author, (A mate and genuine nice guy!) and his family. Any support would be appreciated.

Friends,

On 9 September 2014 we were told that our then 4 year old daughter, Isla, had cancer. Her diagnosis was T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, an aggressive type of leukaemia. Isla had over two years of constant chemotherapy, 28 general anaesthetics, 23 lumbar punctures, 4 bone marrow samples, blood and platelet transfusions and spent months in hospital. She is going well but it won’t be until November 2021 that we will be told she is ‘cured.’

Our family has benefited from the research and trials done by the Children’s Cancer Institute with Isla going on a study to reduce the effects of chemotherapy within a week of her diagnosis, so we want to give something back that will benefit all families with a child with cancer.

The Great Cop Drop is police ( unsworn, retired and ex ) only tandem skydive event by the Children’s Cancer Institute to raise funds to continue their vital and ground breaking research. I’m extremely grateful that Commissioner Michael Fuller APM has given NSWPF support to the event.

The website (link below) has the details;

Date: Sunday  28 October 2018
Time: From 7.30am
Location: Sky Dive Australia – Stuart Park, Cliff Rd, North Wollongong Beach – Sky Dive the beach
Cost : $279 which covers the event AND skydive. Normal weekend tandem sky dive is $329.

Registration also includes Great Cop Drop t-shirt to wear the during the event and keep plus BBQ lunch supplied thanks to the generous support of the Police Association.

Optional cost: Video and photographs

As this is a fundraiser, it’s hoped each participant raises at least $1000.

Although supported by the NSWPF, this is not a police event and participation is off-duty, not in uniform, voluntary and there will be waivers to be signed on the day.

Also there will media leading up to the event and it’s hoped the Today Show will be broadcasting live on the morning.

The first skydiver has already committed to the event and I’m excited to announce the fearless NWMR Commander Assistant Commissioner Mark Jones APM has taken up the #1 skydiving position and has started his fundraising with pace.

The below link is to the website and if you do register go all the way through the process to create your fundraising page.

A high school student has reportedly suffered an aneurysm after an attack by a schoolyard bully.

Josh Lawrie, 15, was allegedly attacked last Monday at St Dominic’s College, a Catholic school in Kingswood, in western Sydney, Channel 7 News reported.

He was reportedly walking through the schoolyard at lunchtime and was punched from behind by a student, who has since been suspended.

He continued to be punched while face-down on the ground until a friend intervened, Channel 7 News said.

“The next thing I remember is being in the bathroom washing my face,” Josh said.

A police spokesman confirmed that Josh and his mother went to St Mary’s police station on Tuesday, the day after the incident, to report “an assault which is alleged to have occurred at a local high school”.

“After reporting the matter to police, the teen was taken to hospital by his mother for scans and treatment of head injuries,” the spokesman said.

Channel 7 News reported that the school initially sent Josh home with his mother Lynda Lawrie, rather than calling an ambulance.

The aneurysm only surfaced during later scans.

The teenager has since undergone brain surgery and will spend his school holidays in hospital.

“I’ve … got a major brain problem and he’s just going to get a suspension for that,” Josh told Channel 7 News.

“He’s wrecked my life and he’ll only get a slap on the wrist.

“I don’t think that’s really good enough,” he said.

Channel 7 News reported that Josh has been told by doctors that he won’t be able to play sport again and will have to take blood thinning medication for the rest of his life.

Josh has been repeatedly bullied at the school and his parents told Channel 7 News that they believe the offender should be held accountable.

Ms Lawrie said that the first thing she was asked when she brought her son to the hospital was why he wasn’t taken in by an ambulance.

His father Richard Lawrie said “young fellas have to realise what they are doing” and think about the consequences of their actions.

A police spokesman said: “Police have obtained a number of statements and are now conducting inquiries into the matter.”

The school has not released an official comment but told Channel 7 News that there are two sides to the story.

A brief is being prepared for the coroner on the baffling overdose death of a young Sydney police officer, with detectives unable to discount the possibility he met with foul play.

The tragedy has also sparked a crisis of confidence within the force’s elite Special Crimes and Internal Affairs branch (SCIA), following claims that repeat warnings about the constable running off the rails were ignored.

City Central general duties officer Matthew Williams was found dead at his Fairlight home unit on the city’s northern beaches 17 days ago, The Sun-Herald has learned.

Sources close to the investigation say he was discovered by his flatmate – also a police officer – with two isolated needle marks in his arm and a used syringe beside his bed.

Suicide and misadventure have not been ruled out, but detectives are also said to be considering the extraordinary prospect that the 26-year-old policeman was deliberately injected with a lethal dose of heroin – known within the criminal fraternity as a “hot shot”.

Internal affairs and crime scene investigators are understood to have spent almost five hours combing the apartment without finding any further trace of the drugs that killed him or other incriminating evidence.

Williams was thought to have spent the night before he died drinking with workmates into the early hours of the morning.

“There was talk about him heading up to the [Kings] Cross afterwards,” one said on condition of anonymity. “But that’s the last anyone knows about what happened.”

On Friday, senior detectives from Manly, the nearest command to where Williams’s body was found, spent the morning speaking to his parents, Robert and Mary Williams, at their home in Sydney’s inner-west.

The couple is still too distraught to speak about the case.

A spokeswoman for NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney said on Friday he was unable to comment on the incident while it was before the coroner.

However, a Sun-Herald investigation has found that Williams had been the subject of a series of police intelligence reports alleging his involvement with party drugs and the inner-city club scene.

Last year, Mr Moroney announced plans to thwart corruption by profiling at-risk officers and intervening to save their careers before they did the wrong thing.

An ongoing audit of internal corruption complaints by SCIA has revealed that hundreds of complaints are not being acted upon.

In Williams’s case, at least one of his colleagues is alleged to have referred to his association with staff at the Cross’s notorious Stripperama, the same club where four off-duty police officers were savagely bashed in June.

Williams’s City Central colleagues spoke warmly of him yesterday.

“He was popular, really popular,” one told The Sun-Herald.

We recently lost a friend and colleague to suicide because of PTSD. She left her son and partner behind because she did not get the help she required. We owe it to her 11 year old son and for all the other partners, children and family members left behind by the officers who can see no Light at the end of the tunnel except by ending their lives. It has to STOP.

For too long, management of Australian Police Forces have silently accepted horrifically high suicide rates amongst our troops – Disproportionately higher than the Australian population.

We demand a national Coronial enquiry, seeking answers in a State by State basis.  We want to learn what are the primary stressors amongst our Police, what is/can be done to minimise this, and greater support services for our Police.

F*** You SA Police” – this was the last social media post of a SA cop who tragically took his own life just days ago.

“Suicide and bullying are rife within the police force. I’ve served as a cop in SA for 11 years now – I’ve battled first hand the toxic “suck it up princess” internal culture. It’s destroying, and costing lives.”

“I’m proud of my job, for keeping our communities safe from crime. We lock up murderers, protect domestic violence victims, and remove kids from horrific abuse. But what I’m sick of is the bureaucratic crap, intimidation and abuse of power that goes on internally.

Stop sweeping the fact police are killing themselves under the carpet. This is too important. My colleagues are dying around me. For too long now, management of Australian Police Forces have silently, knowingly, accepted horrifically high suicide rates amongst our troops – disproportionately higher than the Aussie population.”

I am starting this petition on behalf of myself and colleagues who are seeking an enquiry into the cause of suicides by Police in each Australian State.

We need to learn what the primary stressors are among our Police to then decide how to minimise more tragic deaths from happening.

The ‘Thin Blue Line’ is getting thinner –  Please help protect those who protect our community by signing and sharing our petition.

This petition will be delivered to:

                              The Adam Cannon Benefit Fund

Police Officers everywhere, both past and present, are inevitably bound by a common bond.  This linkage, this manacle or shackle… this incredibly wonderful thing that ties us all together, is forged in both adversity and success.  It manifests itself in both tragedy and triumph, in sadness and elation.

At the commencement of every shift, our goal is to ultimately make it home at the end of the day.  To collectively ensure that our colleagues do the same.  In achieving this, we go a long way towards providing the comfort and protection that communities around the world so desperately need.

Since the dawn of time, Police Officers everywhere have rested soundly in the knowledge that should some tragedy befall them, their loved ones will forever be looked after.  That the bond with their colleagues, forged with blood, sweat and no shortage of tears will in part be passed onto those left behind.

And so it is in this case.

On 27 February 2017, Senior Constable Lisa Cannon of the Western Australian Police sadly left this world, leaving behind a son, Adam.

We are certain that Adam has been surrounded by love… that he is in no doubt that his mother loved him with her entire heart.

As he grows into a man though, it is vitally important that he is made aware of just how highly his mother was regarded on both sides of the world.  As Adam’s Police family, our small part in this is to pass on this legacy.

Please assist us in our endeavours to raise as much money as we can for Adam if only to reinforce to him during this journey that he is not alone in his grief, that Lisa’s extended blue family walks beside him every step of the way.

                              Help spread the word!

The funeral for Brevet Sergeant Ashley Meek, South Australia Police will be held at 10.00am on Wednesday 15 March 2017 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 388 Montague Road Para Vista S.A. and then at Kibby Gardens, Enfield Memorial Park, Browning Street Clearview for a committal service.

Ashley was a decorated veteran, serving proudly with the Royal Australian Army in both East Timor and Iraq, as well as faithfully serving the people of South Australia.

Despite the incredible outpouring of grief following Ashley’s death, what is abundantly clear is that Ashley was dearly loved by all his family and friends. Described as a champion bloke, we intend remembering Ashley the way that he lived, as a true hero.

Rest easy blue brother… your work here is done.

                              MEEK, Ashley.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Grant Stevens, on behalf of all members of the South Australia Police, extends his deepest sympathy and condolences to Ashley’s family, friends and colleagues. Brevet Sergeant Ashley Meek will be sadly missed throughout SAPOL.

This is Ashley Meek. Late last night in rural Australia Ashley took his own life. He was the 6th recorded veteran of the last wars on foreign soil to have taken their own life in 2017. Last year 75 Australian veterans took their own lives.

For the last five years, ever since I was taken under the wing of the Australian Defence Force and toured through the war in Afghanistan I have heard one veteran after another, from every tier of Defence, from every part of Australia tell me how difficult receiving help is for them. It is not new news that The Department of Veteran’s Affairs or DVA is a cumbersome and hopelessly ineffective bureaucracy. Young men and women who had served many tours of Afghanistan quietly called them the DVE to me, or Department of Veteran’s Enemies.

For too many years the DVA only counted suicides amongst enrolled Defence Force members as suicides associated with service. The young man I met who was homeless in Sydney last year after serving 5 tours of Afghanistan would not have been counted because he had been discharged in 2012 with PTSD. If Defence had discharged you for psychological illness and you suicided, then your death was not associated officially with your deployment. It was cruel, misleading and wrong.

Now the DVA is pushing for veterans to be administered as welfare recipients under the community services portfolio. I was sitting at my computer last night trying to get my head around what the changes would mean for some of my young friends who suffer from PTSD after their service in Afghanistan. At the same time I was pondering the Legislative Amendment before Parliament Ashley Meek took his own life. DVA is closing the services that they have offered veterans ever since the Vietnam War. Veterans’ Access Network (VAN) offices around Australia have been steadily closing down. Instead of those services veterans will have no option but Centrelink.

Next time a Prime Minister commits tens of thousands of young Australians to war on the other side of the planet I hope that that same Prime Minister assures those young souls that they will be respected, supported and cared for when they return, and that no expense will be spared in their recovery. Otherwise, do not commit our youth to war..

Aussie cop takes own life at hospital

                              By Megan Palin

A South Australia police officer posted “F*** you SA Police” on his Facebook before walking into a local hospital and taking his life in front of medical staff last night.

The man reportedly drove to Cowell, about a 500km drive west of Adelaide, before entering the District Hospital around 9.45pm, news.com.au reported.

It is not known if the officer was on or off duty at the time of his death.

A brief statement issued by SA Police said authorities were “preparing a report for the coroner following the death of a man at Cowell on March 5”.

“No other persons are being sought at this time,” the statement read.

A South Australia Police spokesperson told news.com.au they had “nothing further to add”.

Cowell District Hospital has been contacted for comment.

One of the police officer’s colleagues, who asked to remain anonymous, said the man “posted (a) ‘f*** you‘ msg (sic) to SAPOL” on Facebook moments before he died

“The messages said F*** SAPOL and some other comments,” the source said.

The man, who news.com.au has chosen not to identify, has been described on social media as “a well respected officer, and former ADF member, who will be missed by many”.

“This bloke was and will forever remain a dead set legend,” another person wrote.

“No one saw it coming. We got the watch now brother.”

“We are all better people having known you,” another said.

News.com.au last month reported a lack of welfare support and subsequent mental health crisis within the Australian Federal Police after an agent was believed to take her own life in the Melbourne headquarters on February 7.

The reports prompted several state police officers to also come forward and highlight that a lack of welfare support for work-related mental health issues including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was also a problem in state policing.

“South Australia has just seen one of their officers (take her own life),” one police officer told news.com.au.

The source was referring to constable Sharryne Grant, South Australia’s longest serving female police officer, who died by suicide in Adelaide in October last year.

“Suicide within the ranks is being ignored state wide,” he said.

“Cops can’t speak out, because they are crucified by management.

                              “(Instead they) suffer in silence.”

Blue Hope director Mark Kelly told news.com.au the organisation had received “nearly 50 referrals from struggling police since Christmas”.

“We are under the pump trying to meet demand,” he said.

                              Gawler soldier honoured

                              20 July 2016

MARCHING in the French National Day Parade and Western Front commemorative services, Sergeant Ashley Meek honoured fourth-generation cousin – and Gawler soldier – Lance Corporal Stewart Grigg last Thursday.
Sgt Meek, who has strong family connections in the Gawler area, serves in the 10th/27th Battalion, Royal South Australia Regiment, and recently embarked on a month-long trip, joining the army contingent for the French National Day Parade.
“The experience was extra special due to having a family history and connection within my unit to the battles in France,” Sgt Meek said.
“Getting to escort the colours, which my family fought for, was the icing on the cake.”
Gawler-born L.Cpl Stewart Grigg was enlisted in the 27th Battalion on February 4, 1915, and was awarded three medals for his service – the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and a Victory Medal.
He served in Egypt, Gallipoli and the Western Front, where he was killed in action during the battle of Agincourt on March 26, 1917.
“Although his remains are yet to be found, his memorial is located at Villers-Bretonneux in France and I intend to visit this site one day,” Sgt Meek said.
He said the trip was a chance to pay his last respects to the late L.Cpl Grigg.
During the Western Front commemorations, he was part of the firing party during the reburial ceremonies.
“It is a very big honour to have been selected as part of the army contingent for French National Day Parade, and, in particular, to go to the Western Front and participate in the commemorative events taking place there,” he said.
In the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Nice, France, Sgt Meek said Australian troops remained “positive”.
“We are here to do a job and pay respect to our forefathers, but France, as a whole, is quite vigilant,” he said.
“The hospitality of the French people and the army has been great.”
Sgt Meek will return home later this month.

                              150 at Lock Dawn Service

IN sombre silence, more than 150 people gathered in the cold pre-dawn to commemorate Anzac Day at Lock.

After an Anzac Day introduction by Neil Cummins, Noel Siviour shared three short extracts from the 2/48th Battalion records.

Noel’s father, Lindsay Siviour, was in the 2/48th Battalion.

National serviceman Richard Cummins spoke of the charge of the Light Horsemen at Beersheba. His wife’s grandfather, Cliff Cabot, was in the 3rd Light Horse Regiment that served in Palestine.

Local Lone Scout Kendall Meyers beautifully recited the poem For the Fallen.

Mark Siviour, who served in East Timor and the Solomon Islands, spoke of Thomas Currie Derrick, known as Diver Derrick, who received the Victoria Cross for his assault at Sattelburg, New Guinea in 1943.

Brevet Sergeant Ashley Meek shared Ben Roberts-Smith’s heroism in Afghanistan during 2010 for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Ashley Meek also read out the Ode of Remembrance, which was followed by the haunting bugling of Doug Monks’ Last Post.

There was one minute of silence and then as Reveille was played, Brevet Sergeant James McFarlane raised the flag.

Reverend Sue Ellis of the Lock Uniting Church led the gathering with the Lord’s Prayer.

Before she read the Soldier’s Prayer, she spoke of Martin Andrews, a former priest, who was a stretcher-bearer for the Medical Corps.

Councillor Malcolm Hancock laid a wreath on behalf of the Elliston District Council.

Lone Scouts, Australian military, CWA and family members also laid wreaths and flowers in remembrance of the fallen and the ceremony closed with prayer and the benediction by reverend Sue Ellis.

LADS (Lock and Districts Services) president Wayne Hodge thanked all for attending and then the club provided a cooked breakfast for all.
