ROSEHILL

Bourke’s Law rules the opposition

SYDNEY: Bourke’s Law may have a hole in the neck, but he showed it did not affect his racing ability when he won the Kentucky Fried Chicken Stakes over 1400 m at Rosehill yesterday..

Part-owned by Taree detectives Dan Bourke and Peter Thomas, the impressive three-year-old gelding is named after the television series, Bourke’s Law.

Bourke’s Law, who has won $18,740 in stakes, was bought at the Scone Yearling Sales early last year for $800.

“This was because all other prospective buyers shunned him because of his gaping hole in the near side of his neck”, Thomas said.

‘The large indention, the size of a fist, is the result of an injection mishap when he was a weanling.

Bourke’s Law, the 5-4 favourite, trained by Max Lees at Broadmeadow and ridden by John Wade, came away over the final stages to win by 5½ lengths from Kaidaham, 5-1, with Star Power, 4-1, a long neck away third.

It was Naomi’s wish that when her time on earth was through, I would simply put a post on her Facebook that says “She’s dead”.

So I will honour her wishes but add some extra flourishes. I am also adding this to Instagram as many of her creative contacts reside here.

As many of you will know by now, Naomi passed away (she HATED me saying that – she would declare, “she died!”) unexpectedly over the weekend.

Naomi was an exceptional human.

She saw people, not as they came to her, but as she believed they could be. She saw the potential and the good in others (sometimes to her own detriment) but she refused to have her faith in humanity dented by a few duds. She was generous with her time and resources. Even when she had nothing herself, she ensured the needs of others were met. She was a stickler for doing things the proper way (which coincidentally was her way). She dotted i’s, crossed t’s – But she was also chaos personified! That was one of the many things we loved about her.
And loved she was! By many. Far and wide. Young and old.
And she loved every single one of us back in her own amazing way.

In true Naomi fashion, she doesn’t want the fuss of a funeral, but we will be working on a way to facilitate a farewell.
But possibly the best way to honour her is to live your life in the most Naomi way you can think of – Do the thing. Buy the thing. Eat the thing. Blast Faithless and dance your arse off.
Because as she would always remind us, “we are a long time dead.”

Vale Naomi Nichols

Pilot not hurt in crash

SYDNEY: A NSW pilot, Mr Trevor Whitmore, escaped when his light aircraft crashed into 20 metres of water at the Prospect Reservoir west of Sydney on Saturday.

Mr Whitmore, 21, was struggling to swim to shore when he was rescued by Constable Don Bentley, 26, and Constable Peter Ward, 48.

An ambulance took MR Whitmore to Blacktown District Hospital in a state of shock, but otherwise unhurt.

The aeroplane has not been found.

Charged over air incident

SYDNEY: A taxi driver who ditched a police-owned light aircraft into the Prospect Reservoir was charged yesterday with having falsely claimed the aircraft had engine failure.

Before Mr McKeowen, SM., at Blacktown Court was 21-year-old Mr Trevor James Whitmore, of Maraylya.

He was charged with having made a false representation by radio transmission to Mr Kevin Albert Bishop, a member of the police force, on May 7 at Prospect.

He appeared also on three other charges related to the same incident .

These were that on May 7 at Prospect he caused $8,000 damage to a 1976 Cessna, VH-UGH, the property of Garry Chapman and other members of the NSW Police Aero Club; that being the pilot in command of the Cessna, he did not immediately before flight check arid test all flight”controls and associated equipment in the aircraft; and that he operated the aircraft in a manner which was negligent.

No pleas were taken.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Sam Findley, said 25 witnesses would be called.

Mr McKeowen set the charges down for hearing at Parramatta Court on September 27. He allowed Mr Whitmore continuing bail of $1,000.

Aircraft crash in dam

SYDNEY: A 21-year-old man had crash-landed a light aircraft into Prospect Reservoir a short time after having learnt he had been adopted, Parramatta Court was told yesterday.

The pilot, who was on a restricted licence, had told police after the crash about his girlfriend and about how he had recently found out he had been adopted, Sergeant Trevor Cullen told the court.

He said he had told the man, Mr Trevor Whitmore, taxi driver of Maraylya, near Vineyard, that Department of Transport air-safety investigators had not been able to find anything mechanically wrong with the aircraft.

Mr Whitmore appeared before Mr R. Butler, SM, on four charges related to the crash at Prospect, an outer western suburb, on May 7.

One charge was of having a false representation by radio to Mr Kevin Albert Bishop, a member of the NSW Police Force, that the engine of his Cessna 150 had failed due to mechanical causes and that a forced landing would be imminent.

He was remanded to October 28 on $1,000 bail.

Damage charge:

trial ordered

SYDNEY: A Sydney taxi-driver was committed yesterday to stand trial on a charge of maliciously causing $11,017 damage to a Cessna 150 aeroplane on May 7.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant P. Dunkley, said that Mr Trevor James Whitmore, 22, of Maraylya, had hired the aircraft which was owned by the NSW Police Aero Club.

In a police record of interview, Mr Whitmore allegedly said he had had a quarrel with his girlfriend and had tried to commit suicide by “diving” the aircraft into a reservoir.

According to the record of interview, he had said he could not swim.

Mr Charles Gould, the reservoir’s resident officer for the Water Board, said that when the aircraft came down there were about 500 picnickers in the area.

Mr Whitmore was allowed $1,000 bail and committed to the current sittings of Parramatta District Court.

(COURT REPORTS)

Taxi driver not Qantas pilot

SYDNEY: A taxi driver flew a hired light aircraft valued at $18,000 into Prospect Reservoir, west of Sydney, after his girlfriend found out he was not a Qantas pilot, Parramatta District Court was told yesterday.

Mr Trevor James Whitmore, 23, of Maraylya had spent most of his money trying to impress his girlfriend, 18, and trying to gain her favours, but she did not take the relationship seriously, Sergeant Peter John Cullen, of Blacktown, said.

In what Judge Herron called a “Walter Mitty sydrome”, Mr Whitmore had dressed as a pilot and even given a talk at a local flying school, Sergeant Cullen said.

Mr Whitmore also had obtained air tickets for his girlfriend and her family and charged them only a fraction of the real cost.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of having maliciously injured one Cessna aircraft at prospect in May last year.

Judge Herron put Mr Whitmore on a $600 good-behaviour bond for three years. He ordered that Mr Whitmore pay $6,000 at $80 a month, for damage to the aircraft.

He also was ordered to keep in contact with the probation and parole service.

Passing of retired Senior Assistant Commissioner Peter Walsh registered number 11722.
Peter joined the NSW Police Force in 1965, retiring in 2003 following 38 years of service.
Peter dedicated his life to the service of the people of New South Wales, not only was he a Police Officer but spent many years as a member of the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) and was even a flight crew member with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter whilst attached to the Northern Region.
Over a distinguished career, he earned the respect of colleagues across the organisation leading through such incidents as the 1991 Strathfield massacre which saw the murder of seven people and the 1995 ambush murders of two officers in his command, Senior Constables Robert Spears and Peter Addison, at Crescent Head near Kempsey.
Beyond his rank and achievements, Peter was a mentor, a leader, and a trusted mate to many.
On behalf of our members, we extend our sincere condolences to Peter’s family, friends and former colleagues. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
May Retired Senior Assistant Commissioner Walsh rest in peace.

“Botfly” came from one of the SenCon’s at Dubbo – but I don’t know why.

“Boxhead” – no idea where / when that nickname adhered to Peter.

“Smiley” – I suppose that was on his face 99% of the time.

“Yapper” – apparently he didn’t mind a conversation.

From Dave Morris – 26 March 2014:
Class 112 swearing in 15.9.67 – rain had washed out the parade so we were moved indoors. I recall Barry Elliott being front row on the left, not sure who is next but then Phil Roots and I remember Phil and Barry were real good mates. About the only other I can place is front row 2nd from the right, Barry Faint and I think the tall Constable with the cap on is Jeff Jarratt, having already been sworn in on his birthday prior to the parade, as Cadets were.

New South Wales Police Historical SocietyMark Russell · · My first class number was Class 115. Secondary Training commenced 1/04/69 to 9/05/69. There was 2 Police Women in this class and 4 Railway Detective Police ( however I think only 3 are in the photo ). Me, I'm front row eighth from the right. I turned 19 just one week from being sworn in. A good mate of mine at the time was David Reiher. He is seated three to the left of me ( my left) . We did our training together and we also did the bike course together at St Ives. Sadly he was struck my a ute down in Wollongong on the 21st December 1969 and passed away. A wonderful friend with a great sense of humour. Many years later I stopped a car coming off Taren Point Bridge which had disobeyed a red light. After writing up the ticket with the driver having the same surname as Dave, I asked him if he ever knew a police officer named Dave Reiher. He replied, "That was my son". That is the worst I have ever felt in issuing a ticket. He was so gracious after I told him of our association many years back and accepted the fine with absolute grace. I still felt like shit.
