Peter IRBY, was a serving member of the NSW Police Force between 03/05/2002 and the 02/02/2012 where he attained the rank of Senior Constable.  Peter performed general duties at Marrickville, Transit Police and Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command before being stationed at Richmond Local Area Command between 09/09/2007 and the 02/02/2012 where he performed duties at Nimbin Police Station.

Peter passed away in hospital on the 31/10/2018 after a lengthy but valiant fight with cancer.  Peter was only 40 years old and had been a proud Police officer. He leaves behind his wife, Diona, their three young children, Henry, Darcy & Milah.

One of Peter’s last wishes was for Diona and the children to go to Disneyland.  This is a very small wish for a man who dedicated himself to serving the people of NSW.  It is hoped that we can raise some funds to assist Diona and their children at this difficult time.

Today we have the melancholy honour of launching the Peter Irby Fundraiser. Senior Constable Peter Irby served in the NSW Police Force for ten years. At the age of just 40 he lost his lengthy battle with cancer, leaving behind his wife and three young children. One of his final wishes was for his family to go to Disneyland in California, and this fundraiser seeks to help with that. Please help if you can, and please help spread the word: http://bit.ly/peterirby

Peter attended Mullumbimby High School between 1990 – 1996 to Year 12.
In September 2014 he did the Introduction to Return to Work Co-ordinator Course.
In April 2015 he did the Cert IV training and Assessment for Diploma of work, health and safety.
In March 2015 he was a Student at the Southern Cross University.

‘PETE IRBY – WHAT A TOP BLOKE ‘– If I had a dollar for every time I heard that comment made!!  For all of us who love and adore him, Pete is that cheerful, loyal, fun loving guy who can always put a smile on your face with his wicked sense of humour!
Pete and his partner in crime Diona, have been married for over 12 years. Together they are raising the most wonderful little humans, Henry (11), Darcy (9) and Milah (7). Pete is the most amazing, devoted and loving father.
Pete has devoted his professional life to making a difference in the community and proudly served as a police officer attached to Marrickville LAC, Tuggerah Lakes LAC and Richmond LAC. It is a challenging environment and as his former Supervisor Mark said, “I was honoured to be his supervisor for several years of his service”. Pete is an outgoing and positive person with a strong desire to perform any role to the best of his ability. His perfectionist nature, empathy and willingness to help others selflessly are character traits we all admire in him. In keeping with Pete’s desire to help out his community, he is currently studying to be a nurse.
DIAGNOSIS
On Wednesday 7th of March 2018, Diona and Pete were given the heartbreaking news Pete was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. When he was diagnosed, Pete was also informed that the cancer had spread through to his Liver. Since then a PET scan has identified that the cancer has shown up in his colon as well.  When cancer cells break away from the primary tumour in the bowel, they can travel around in the blood stream or in lymph fluid. There is a common pattern in the way that bowel cancer spreads in the body. The name given to this kind of bowel cancer is ‘metastatic’ and each new area of growth away from the primary tumour is known as a ‘metastasis’

Pete has endured numerous tests and procedures over the past week to ascertain what the best course of action is, along with his team of specialists.  Pete will start chemo next week.

PURPOSE OF THIS PAGE

This go fund me page has been created to help Pete and Dee pay the mounting Medical bills that will come their way.  After helping so many people professionally and personally it is fitting his colleagues, friends and community ‘have his back’ in this time of need.

This diagnosis has rocked all of Pete’s friends and family to our core. As Pete’s mate Fyshy said, “Last Thursday morning I woke to the news that my best mate had this hideous disease, absolutely broke my heart. Pete Irby is not my best mate he is my brother that’s how close we are, we were inseparable growing up, Pete’s family give us the nickname Fysh n Chips.

This is going to be a very long and tough journey for Pete and his beautiful family, and I hope we can help them all as much as we possibly can. There are so many things I can say about Pete, but the biggest thing is he needs each and everyone’s support in this shit time. “

Pete is determined to beat this hideous disease. Let’s get behind Pete and his family and try to ease some of the financial pressure for them.

Any contribution you can make is greatly appreciated.  Please keep Pete and his family in your thoughts as he fights this insidious disease.

#TeamPete

Ajax Bolt There was a Robert W White, born, 9/10/1940, registered no 12534, member of class 110, sworn in at Redfern on 3/4/1967. He joined the Police band very early in his career and was a trumpet player, he apparently worked in the corrective services band at some time. Could be the same person, hope this helps in some way.

Cameron Bell  Yes that’s him. He played the cornet amongst others. He also played in the Police Bands Dance Band where only a select few top musicians would play. He was an excellent musician and I always remember the jokes he used to tell.
Cameron Bell Just trying to remember the year, but Mike Butcher took over conducting the band in 1972 and it was just after that the band went full time which would have been 1974/75.
Before that Whitey was stationed at Petersham where I think he was when he joined. He did three periods a week teaching music at a PCYC. Whitey was at Leichhardt.
He was still with the Police band when he died of bowel cancer.
He was a funny bugger, he turned 50 and seemed to give it up. Always saying “not bad for an old bugger”. The word was if he had had periodical check ups he would still be alive today.
So to sum up he was only stationed at Petersham police station then full time band at the Police Barracks at Redfern.
Hope that helps

Police leap to challenge of helping stricken mate

WHEN Senior Constable Dave Mansfield was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the start of the year, he had many colleagues willing to literally jump to his aid.

Senior Constable Jay Stewart and colleagues Graham Smith, Mick Errickson, Karen Bertram and Steve Bancroft warming up for their Guinness Book of World Records attempt for continuous jumping on a jumping castle.
Senior Constable Jay Stewart and colleagues Graham Smith, Mick Errickson, Karen Bertram and Steve Bancroft warming up for their Guinness Book of World Records attempt for continuous jumping on a jumping castle.

As a fundraiser for the father of three, officers from Tuggerah Lakes police are preparing to set a new Guinness Book of World Records mark for continuous jumping on a jumping castle .

The record stands at 37 hours and 14 seconds, and the group is determined to blow that time out of the water at Mingara Recreation Club, Tumbi Umbi, on May 29-31.

Such was the interest in assisting the Mansfield family, organiser Senior Constable Jay Stewart had to knock back some prospective jumpers as only eight are required.

While there is no strict training schedule planned, Sen-Constable Stewart said they had a plan of attack for their record attempt.

“We’re going to try half an hour stints,” he said.

“We were going to try an hour at a time but I don’t know if you could do it for that long.”

The group have set up a Facebook page and are seeking support from businesses in the lead-up to the event.

Sen-Constable Mansfield was speechless when his colleagues told him of their plans, although he confessed to having a laugh when he was told about the jumping castle.

“I thought it was hilarious to begin with,” he said.

“But I’ve been speechless at how much support has been generated.”

Hunter Valley Amusement Hire has donated the use of a jumping castle.

World record attempt to raise funds for cancer sufferer

Eight officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police will begin a world record attempt for the longest marathon bouncing on a jumping castle at Mingara Recreation Club on Friday, May 29.

The attempt is to raise funds for their Tuggerah Local Area Command colleague, senior constable Dave Mansfield, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the start of the year.

SC Mansfield is a married man and a father of a young family, so, according to the Police Association of NSW, his “police family” is banding together to raise funds to assist the Mansfield family.

The current marathon on a jumping castle world record stands at 37 hours and 14 seconds.

“We believe we can blow that record out of the water by jumping well into Sunday,” said Ms Alison McLaughlin, spokesperson for the Police Association.

A family fun day will be held on Saturday, May 30 as part of the world record attempt including raffles, barbecue, NSW Police Dog Unit, POLAIR landing and “Dunk a Cop”.

COAST COPS SMASH WORLD RECORD FOR JUMPING CASTLE MARATHON

Finally tonight, a group of Central Coast police officers has set a new world record for the longest team marathon on a jumping castle, by bouncing for 43 hours and 25 minutes.

They smashed the previous mark by more than six hours.

It was all about raising money to support fellow Tuggerah Lakes officer, David Mansfield, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February.

“I… I truly am speechless. How do you thank so many people? I guess you keep fighting. This is the most humbling experience I think you could ever have.”

Tourists saved from Sydney bus inferno

A quick-thinking driver and two alert off-duty police officers saved 32 foreign tourists from the smoke, flames and explosions of a burning tour bus in Sydney.

The group were travelling on the Gore Hill freeway at Artarmon about 6.30pm yesterday when the driver noticed an engine fire, prompting him to stop in a breakdown lane and quickly start evacuating his passengers.

Two off-duty police officers, Constable David Mansfield and Senior Constable Bryon Williams, happened to be travelling in a car nearby and decided to follow the bus after noticing smoke coming from its rear.

“As the bus pulled over we got out of the car,” Senior Constable Williams told reporters yesterday.

“The back of the bus was engulfed in flames and smoke.”

By the time the officers got to the front of the bus, passengers were scrambling to get off.

“Obviously there was a lot of chaos,” Senior Constable Williams said.

“Within minutes the whole bus was alight.

“There were numerous explosions … the windows on either side were blowing out with the heat.

“I thought, if we don’t get these people off there’s going to be a big fatality.”

None of the passengers were injured. The officers and the bus driver suffered smoke inhalation.

All that remains of the bus is a burnt shell.

The freeway at Artarmon was closed between Willoughby Road and Reserve Road for nearly an hour while firefighters fought the blaze, causing traffic problems.

Tourists’ lucky escape from bus blaze

Updated

Two off-duty police officers who had just seconds to save passengers from a burning bus on Sydney’s North Shore last night say they feared the bus would explode.

Senior Constable Bryon Williams and Constable David Mansfield were travelling behind the bus when it caught on fire while carrying 32 tourists on the Gore Hill Freeway in Artarmon about 6:00pm.

The driver pulled over and the officers only had seconds to get the passengers off before flames engulfed the bus.

Senior Constable Williams says the officers’ first concern was the passengers.

“It was out of control. Within a minute, the whole bus was nearly alight. The windows on either side of the bus were blowing out with the heat and the amount of fire and that coming from the bus,” he said.

“It was close… I actually thought this thing’s going to blow up and if we don’t get these people off, there’s going to be a big fatality.

“It was very scary from my point of view, from the point of view of the people on the bus and the poor bus driver himself.”

The fire started in the engine bay of the bus.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for more than an hour, causing traffic problems.

39 years ago today I was with my family on our way to Brooklyn to see my nanna and pop.

We drove up to a bridge in Granville which we normally drive over. Moments before the bridge had collapsed on a busy commuter train.

My dad, Dick Lamb was the first off duty Policeman on the scene, he made the call to triple o to alert our emergency services of this disaster. My mum left him on the scene, returned home to get him his rescue squad overalls where he worked day and night along side his colleagues of the Police Rescue Squad and other emergency services to save the lives so many.

That day, 83 people died and over 200 people injured.

We are so proud of you dad, we love you xx

One of the first people to rush to the scene of the 1977 Granville train disaster has died, one day after the anniversary of the crash.

Off-duty police officer Dick Lamb was one of several volunteers who tried to help those injured when the Mt Victoria to Sydney express train derailed on January 18.

The derailment brought down the Bold St bridge onto the carriages, leaving 83 people dead and more than 200 injured.

Mr Lamb, believed to be aged in his 70s, died from cancer on Tuesday, Granville Memorial Trust president John Hennessey said.

“He was one of the unsung heroes of the disaster,” Mr Hennessey told AAP.

“He was a very brave, humble man and provided great support to all the victims over the last 39 years,” he said.

“We are all in mourning and were saddened to hear of his death”.

Survivors, emergency crews and those who lost loved ones gathered for a ceremony on Monday to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the disaster.

Mr Lamb, who had been battling cancer for the last few months, was unable to attend the memorial.

Email Received on 28 January 2016:

Dear Cal,
Am just home from the funeral and feel totally emotionally drained.
About 200 people turned out, some were family, some friend’s but mostly were former colleagues comprising of Police Rescue, Volunteer Police Rescue and other parts of the police brotherhood.
As Richard’s coffin was carried from the venue, all of these people formed a guard of honour.
Then a Police helicopter did a fly over. As the hearse drove out the Police Rescue Squad truck followed it closely.
I am overwhelmed at the love that was in that room for my cousin. I was not aware of just how courageous Richard was and felt proud to be there.
As promised, I have the program from the funeral and will get my husband to scan it and send it on.
I have also asked for copies of the photo’s that were taken and will forward these when I get them.
Thank you for your interest in Richard.
I remain
Your’s
Lesley
