Cathy Leigh DONNEY
Cooper DONNEY & Cathy Leigh DONNEY
Hi my name is Schooner and I am raising funds for a wonderful and heartfelt situation concerning a friend ‘Cath Donney’.
Everyday members of the emergency services put their lives on the line to protect and serve our community. Cath Donney is a 21 year general duties veteran and Sergeant of the NSW Police Force. Cath has minimal support re family assistance.
After many years of wanting to become a mother, Cath’s lifelong dream was finally realised with the arrival of her beautiful son ‘Cooper’ (2019).
The first diagnosis of Cancer
In 2021 Cath was diagnosed with stage 4 triple negative breast cancer. After countless rounds of radiation, chemotherapy and surgery she entered remission in early 2023. The following months were spent creating quality moments with Cooper.
Second diagnosis of Cancer
In September 2023 scans revealed a tumour in her brain. Cath underwent surgery and the tumour was removed successfully. However, in March 2024 the cancer had spread into Cath’s brain and her spine. Chemotherapy and radiation have commenced.
The situation currently
Cath and Cooper are currently surrounded by the love and support of close friends and work colleagues. She is receiving help with meals, lots of visits, house cleaning and lots of play dates for her son. Cooper is an amazing young boy who is a kind, affectionate and gentle young man despite all the challenges of mum being ill. He is a testament to the love that Cath embodies.
How the funds will help Cath and why this is so important
No longer being able to work Cath has had to use her life savings to keep her and Coop afloat amidst the extra costs due to being unwell. She now needs financial help.
Cath did not want any fundraising
When approached about this idea, Cath was totally against the concept of any fundraiser. She has always been an independent strong-willed individual never relying on any person whatsoever. Her response to this fund raiser was ‘Other people need this more than me’. Even though her diagnosis is serious Cath still does not feel deserving of any handout or financial assistance.
Thank you in advance to any donation, big or small. Every cent raised will be given to Cath and Cooper to assist with their ongoing expenses, and also set up a trust account for Coopers future.
Nothing further, than what is recorded above, is known about this person at the time of publication and further information and photos would be appreciated.
Deepest condolences to Ian and their two children, Jensen & Evelyn in your loss of Rach.
Condolences are also extended to other family and friends.

From Ian – 8 September 2025
I just wanted to drop a message and thank everyone for their heart felt comments and best wishes….I have read everyone of them, and although would take me ages to like and reply to each, my family and I love all the support and generosity that has been shown to us.
Unfortunately Rachel passed away about 4:15 yesterday afternoon, and I was the lucky one to be sitting by her side and holding her hand as she took her last breath. At that time the world lost a mother, a wife, a sister, a friend, a colleague….an all round trooper and battler.
She fought this disease with everything she had and not once showed the toll it was taking on her; she smiled, worked and just got on with it. A true testament to the world.
She will be forever be missed, loved and cherished
Hi I’m Sarah, And I’m raising funds to show our support to Rachel, Ian and their 2 kids Jensen (13) and Evelyn (9).
3 years ago Rachel was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, she has fought hard these last 3 years with treatments and trials, but sadly was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Rachel has done everything to continue to fight for more time.. but sadly last Wednesday night, Rachel was taken to hospital with internal bleeding. Rachel was flown to RPA in Sydney on Thursday for life saving treatment, Sadly Ian has now been told that his beautiful wife Rachel is unlikely to survive through this. Ian will continue to stay in Sydney by his wife’s side in the ICU. We prayer they are able to make Rachel stable enough to be transported back to Dubbo hospital, to be surrounded by her loved ones.
I know times are tough for everyone, but if you have the means to donate any amount. I know Ian and the kids would be very appreciative to take the financial burden off them, while they go through this very sad time.
UPDATE
3rd September 2025
by Sarah Wilkinson, Organiser
Thank you so much to everyone who has kindly donated. I know how much this means to Ian and Rachel.
With permission from Ian, we share an update with you all.
Sadly there is no positive news to bring you, Rachel is still in the ICU at RPA, with Ian by her side.
Her immediate family has now been and visited, her 2 beautiful children Jensen and Evelyn have been and spent some time with their mum.
Rachel has been taken off all treatment and made to be comfortable…
Please keep Rachel, Ian, Jensen and Evelyn in your prayers.
Please also keep Rachel’s Family in your thoughts as they go through this unimaginable pain. Rachel’s mum Kay, Rachel’s sister Ali, Rachel’s brothers Ben, Nick, Matt, Nathan and their partners and kids..
UPDATE 7th SEPTEMBER
By Sarah Wilkinson
It is with heavy hearts and tears in my eyes that I share the news that Rachel has sadly passed away.
She left this world peacefully, with her loving husband Ian by her side as she took her final breaths.
Rachel was deeply loved by all who knew her — her kindness, strength, and warmth touched so many lives. Her presence will be missed more than words can express.
Rachel will be welcomed to heaven with her dad waiting with open arms for his beloved daughter, and her two dogs at her feet..
Ian thanks everyone for their love, support, and prayers during this time.
Please keep Ian, Jensen & Evelyn in your thoughts. As well as all of Rachel & Ian’s family as they go through difficult time.
Update:7 September 2025 by Ian Hobden, Beneficiary.
I just want to post a quick message to say how grateful and humbled I am by everyone’s support and generosity during what has been and will continue to be a very tough time for me, my two beautiful kids and the rest of my family.
As expected Rachel took her last breath this afternoon, alongside me while we watched some TV….she was aware of this fundraiser and was blown away each day when I told her of the generosity of everyone.
These funds will go straight to our children for their future and will help them navigate life as it goes on without their mother by their side but knowing she will always be there to keep them safe and look after them.

Surprise cancer diagnosis put Ali in fight for her life
by rstevens
4th Oct 2014 5:00 AM
WHEN Alison Sheehan went to her GP complaining of back pain following a freak fall at home several weeks before, the last thing she expected was a cancer diagnosis.
But this is the cruel reality facing the 33-year-old mother of one, detective, and children’s cancer fundraising champion.
“She had a number of tests and eventually they diagnosed her with breast cancer and, unfortunately, the legions had spread to her spine and lymph nodes,” friend and colleague Donna Tutt said.
“Ali has been told when she beats cancer she may be faced with a significant disability due to the damage to her spine.”
While Ms Sheehan undergoes treatment at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra hospital, her partner Adam had to resign from his job as a manager at the Byron Bay Brewery to care for 18-month-old Jack, who suffers EoE, an allergy related inflammation of the oesophagus, which results in difficulty swallowing, chest discomfort and heartburn.
A regular fundraiser for children’s cancer sufferers in the region, earlier this year, Ms Sheehan helped raise money for Jacob Mercy-Ireland who has osteosarcoma.
“Ali cut all of her hair off to raise money and then donated it to “Beautiful Lengths” – a Pantene charity that makes wigs for chemo patients.”
A former constable with Lismore PCYC, Ms Sheehan did a lot of work with youth from the Lismore region before she was transferred to the ranks of Byron Bay detectives two years ago.
“She was the dux of our original class 14 years ago and she was the dux of the detectives’ class as well – so she had a huge career ahead of her.”
To support Ms Sheehan and her fight against cancer, Ms Tutt has organised the Paddle for Ali, on October 26.
“Come and support someone local who has been a huge fundraiser for children’s cancer.”
Participants will paddle nine kilometres along the Brunswick River, from Heritage Park, Mullumbimby, to Banner Park, Brunswick Heads. “Any type of non-motorised watercraft can be used, from canoes, to kayaks, skis and surfboards.”
An event safety briefing will be held at 9.30am, with the paddle to start at 10am.
On arrival at Banner Park, a barbecue and raffle will be held, with all proceeds going toward Ms Sheehan’s fundraising campaign.
People who are unable to paddle can still donate at any Westpac branch.
