John Russell Stewart THOMPSON AKA Stewart THOMPSON

John Russell Stewart THOMPSON AKA Stewart THOMPSON

Our Volunteer in Policing Mr Stewart Thompson has hit some career highlights in his years. Stewart is 81 years of age, yet attends the NSW Mounted Police every Tuesday to assist with the Tour Groups and in the Museum. He rises at 4:30am in summer and 5:30am in winter, to feed his 16 horses, before boarding a train to the city, where he imparts his knowledge of our unit to the community.

For an 81 year old, Stewart does pretty well. He still rides each week and is in charge of the A Troop Richmond, Windsor as part of the Australian Light Horse. He runs his own museum, which is open to members of the public, displaying a plethora of both police and Australian Light Horse memorabilia.

Stewart joined NSWMP ( Mounted Police ) in 1955 and was stationed at Bellbrook Police Station in 1958. He was the last Mounted Officer at an outstation, when in July 1961 the Land Rover replaced the horse at Bellbrook.

Stewart continued his police service at Kurindi and Katoomba and resigned from the Police in 1969.

Stewart then rejoined the Australian Army (where he was stationed at Ingleburn prior to his Mounted Police service) and he served in the New Guinea Army.

We wish Stewart and his wife Joan, a very happy celebration of 60 years of marriage next year! A fantastic milestone for a wonderful couple.

John Russell Stewart THOMPSON AKA Stewart THOMPSON - in uniform
Stewart – in uniform

In opposition to the above information about ‘Stewarts’ Policing service – which was obtained from the Police Mounted Unit; upon his death, NSWPF advertised that ‘Stewart’ was performing duties at Katoomba at the time of his disengagement on 7 November 1955, completing 13 years service with NSW Police Force.

The 1968 ‘Stud Book’ clearly shows J.R.S. Thompson, DOB: 8 April 1934 having been ‘Sworn In’ as a Probationary Constable on the 7 November 1955 and obtaining the Rank of Senior Constable on the 7 November 1966. As of 1968 he had qualified for a promotion to Sergeant 3rd Class but had Resigned, in 1969, prior to obtaining that Rank.

He does NOT appear in the 1969 ‘Stud Book’ which also verifies this data.

Unable to find any further information on Stewart – either Military, Private or Police, than what is above.

Aged 63 Years
She Loved And Cared For All Animals

Relatives and friends of Anne are invited to attend her Memorial Service to be held at the Northcliffe Chapel of Hansen & Cole, 634 Northcliffe Drive, Kembla Grange on Saturday March 27, 2021 commencing at 11am.

Ann Labone passed away on 26 March after being in hospital for a few weeks.

The cause of her death was ‘possibly’ from some blood disorder which may or may not have been contracted when she was in Peru last November, 2019.

Annie, You were a bloody good sport with all the lads at Warilla over the years and a great Admin Officer.

You worked in various rolls at the old Warilla Police Station from HWP and Detectives.

You were a great worker at Port Kembla in Court Processing.

I have video of you participating in a Cricket match between Warilla GD’s and HWP when we played in 1987 – but, unfortunately, the quality isn’t worth displaying.

Annie, may you forever Rest In Peace.

Newtown police officer’s 34 day cycle challenge for colleague

When Senior Constable Anthony New offered to cycle from Perth to Sydney to raise money for his colleague Pam Sutton, she initially refused.

But after thinking about the uncertainty she faced with her latest cancer prognosis, she finally agreed.

Ms Sutton has provided administrative support to the officers at Newtown Police Station for 11 years. She has taken most of her sick leave and eaten up much of her super.

“It’ll help me catch up on medical bills … I don’t know what will happen (in the future). It’s a bit of a backup,” she said.

Senior Constable New will set off from South Mole Lighthouse in Fremantle and finish the 4000km journey at the Sydney Opera House 34 days later.

He hopes to raise at least $10,000 when he ‘pedals for pam’.

“It was just out of the blue. He said, ‘I will be riding from Perth to Sydney and I’d like to be able to support you and whatever is going to happen in the future’,” Ms Sutton said.

“It’s incredible that he would do that for someone else.”

“(At Newtown police station) we all get along really well … we’re good friends and we support each other,” she said.

Ms Sutton’s battle with cancer has been long and gruelling.

Since she was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer in 2014, she has had part of her bowel, liver and lung removed, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and brachytherapy.

The cancer has now spread to her lymph nodes.

“The prognosis is not going to go away. It’s just going to be there. I have a win, I think I’ve beaten it, and then it says ‘hey you haven’t beaten me’ … it’s an ongoing battle between me and the disease and I’m going to win,” she said.

Ms Sutton has grandchildren and three kids in their 30s and 40s, which keep her going.

But work has also been a saving grace, so it’s pressing that she is receiving so much support from her colleagues.

“Coming to work helps. If I didn’t come to work, I think it would be very easy to give into the fatigue. (It’s good) coming to work and having people around me who are so positive. Just to say, ‘How you going?’ or “I’ll carry that for you’,” Ms Sutton said.

Senior Constable New started working at Newtown Police Station around the time Ms Sutton was first diagnosed with cancer.

“She’s just a really positive lady and wants to help out the officers. She’s worked in the station and helped out with counter inquires, she’s good with the public … she’s just a great lady,” Senior Constable New said.

“It makes the ride more important for me … I can ride for somebody and help a work colleague.”

Senior Constable New was a decathlete, a state champion in track and field, in the army reserves, but he said this solo bike ride across Australia is another beast.

“This is the hardest thing I will do but it’s nothing compared to what Pam will go through … if I suffer a little bit of pain out on the road.”

Here is Pam’s story:

Pam Sutton is a much loved and valued member with the Inner West Police Area Command. Pam has worked for NSW Police for 11 years as a General Administrative Support Officer.

Pam was diagnosed with Stage 3 Bowel Cancer in January 2014. She underwent surgery and began her first round of chemotherapy.

Since being diagnosed, Pam has continued to fight a courageous battle. Pam has endured many rounds of chemotherapy over the years as the cancer was found to have spread to different parts of her body. After Doctors detected cancer in the liver, Pam underwent another operation to have part of her liver removed followed by more chemotherapy.

Further tests revealed the cancer had spread to one of Pam’s lungs resulting in another operation to remove the tumour from the lung. Another gruelling round of chemotherapy followed. Further tests showed the cancer had spread to lymph node near the heart. Pam underwent radiotherapy and a particularly intense round of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy treatment could not continue as Pam’s immune system became too weak for further treatment. As a result, the chemotherapy treatment was stopped to allow Pam’s immunity to improve. The treatment had fortunately shrunk the size of the tumour, however, when the treatment ceased the tumour grew back.

Recent tests have shown the cancer has spread to the bladder and another lymph node. Pam has recently started another round of chemotherapy.

Pam has battled this illness for the past five and a half years, and to the amazement of her peers has taken minimal leave during treatment and recovery. She has continued to show up to work despite everything she has endured and even in times of feeling very unwell and weak due to the chemotherapy treatment. Her dedication, strength and her positive attitude are a wonder to all that cross her path.

Pam’s medical expenses have been ongoing and as anyone could image a huge burden to her. We’d like to ask anyone who would like to contribute to this worthy cause, to make a donation.

Senior Constable Anthony NEW & Pam SUTTON.

To all those who have been following Senior Constable Anthony New’s #Pedal4Pam journey, we have some sad news.

It is with a very heavy heart that our Inner West Police Area Command family said goodbye to Pam Sutton on Sunday 29 September 2019.

Pam had bravely battled cancer for five and a half years and will always be remembered as the kind-hearted, vibrant soul that she was.

For all those who have donated to #Pedal4Pam and NSW Police Legacy, we thank you. The money will be donated to Pam’s family.

Anthony – Thin blue dot – is currently over half way through his 4000km bike ride across Australia and we know Pam would be extremely proud of his efforts.

Rest in peace Pam ????

Background from Bill Fowler:

Cal, I worked with Glyn when he began in the early 80‘s at Sydney VKG, in the hat factory. He was a very good radio and Telex operator.

He transferred to Newcastle VKG where he retired.

Glyn was a Comms. Operator in the Royal Navy, serving as a Submariner prior to coming to Australia.

His wife, Marion George, a Police Woman, also worked at Sydney VKG prior to transferring to Newcastle area G.D.

She resigned and later worked at Newcastle VKG.

They were a terrific couple.

TRAIN MURDER

Defendant’s alleged admission

SYDNEY, Sun.: Ronald Vincent Holl, had admitted Shooting Olaf Perkman in the Narrandera – Sydney train on Saturday, February 20, the Police Prosecutor ( Sgt. K. B. McGrath NSWPF # 4003 ) told Central Court of Petty Sessions yesterday.

Holl, 24, laborer, of Belmore Road, Herne Bay, was charged with having murdered Perkman, 40, C.S.I.R.O. scientist, who was shot through the head.

A railway employee found Perkman‘s body when the train reached Central Station.

Allegedly near Picton

Sgt. McGrath said Holl had told police the train was passing through a tunnel near Picton when the shooting occurred.

Sgt. McGrath told Mr. C. H. Blakemore. S.M., that Detective Sgt. Fergusson and Detective-Constable F. Krahe ( NSWPF # 4530 ) had extensive inquiries to make in the Griffith area.

At Sgt. McGrath‘s request, Mr. Blakemore remanded Holl to Central Police Court tomorrow when, Sgt. McGrath said, the police would apply for another remand to the date of the Coroner’s inquest.

Holl was refused bail.

Holl was escorted into the C.I.B. and about an hour later was placed in a police car and taken to Picton, where police continued inquiries.

RAIL – CARRIAGE DEATH BEING INVESTIGATED

SYDNEY, Monday,

A C.I.B. Scientific Bureau constable described in the City Coroner’s Court today how he found the body of a C.S.I.R.O. scientist lying in a pool of blood on the seat of a railway carriage. Constable James Ernest Merrett was giving evidence at the inquest into the death of Olf Perkman, 40, research officer stationed at Griffith Irrigation Station, on February 20. Present in court, in custody, was Ronald Holl, 24, labourer, of Belmore Road, Herne Bay,; who has been charged with the murder of Perkman.

Constable Merrett said he had gone to Central railway station about 8.30 a.m. on February 20.

He told the Court he had seen the body lying full length on the seat in a compartment in the rear carriage of the South West Mail train. The body was covered with a brown checkered travelling rug.

Blood on Floor

Constable Merrett said the body was lying on its left side, with the left hand across the body and the right hand clasping the head and forehead.

There was a considerable quantity of blood on the head and the seat, and some had run down onto the floor and been partially wiped up, he told the Coroner ( Mr. E. J. Forrest ). The body was dressed in a khaki shirt, with a navy blue and orange tie, red-brown trousers, and tan rubber soled shoes.

After the Government Medical Officer had conducted an examination of the body, a search was made of the compartment.

Pockets Turned Out

Const. Merrett said a number of hairs had been found on Perkman’s right hand, on the heel of his right shoe and a long hair near his right hip pocket. He said the right and left hand trouser pockets and the fob pocket of the deceased were turned out.

The Government Analyst ( Dr. H. B. Taylor ) said he had examined blood and a piece of skin from the body. He said there was a small hole in the skin taken from the forehead of the dead man. Surrounding the hole was a black patch which was found to contain particles of carbon and nitrate, components of certain types of ammunition.

The hearing is proceeding.

The fingerprint that trapped a killer

When swarthy, slightly built Ronald Vincent Holl (24), laborer, and the father of three children, including twins, launched on a series of escapades at 13 years of age in 1943 he triggered a trap that 11 years later landed him in Central Criminal Court dock charged with murder.

As Holl came to police notice, his fingerprints were filed by the C.I.B. Holl grew older and wiser and had gone straight for a number of years when in 1952 he married a girl of 15. On Feb. 26 this year the couple had twins aged 18 months, a baby aged five months and were expecting another child when a call went out to police to bring in Holl for questioning.

Six days earlier, at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Feb. 20, railway porter Francis Ernest Vicq, of Western St., Dulwich Hill, had found the body of C.S.I.R.O. agricultural scientist Olaf Perkman (41), shot through the head in the last ‘dog box’ carriage of the South West Mail train shortly after it reached Central Station.

Perkman had been returning from the C.S.I.R.O. station at Griffith to spend the weekend with his wife and family.

Wide search

The hue and cry for the callous killer — who had cut short Perkman‘s brilliant academic career in his sleep and had then plundered his pockets — had run into a deadend.

A police search for the murder gun and clues all along the rail link from Goulburn to Sydney had proved fruitless. But Const. J. K. Hennessy, of the C.I.B fingerprint branch, had dredged up a fragmentary fingerprint on the door of the lavatory in the death carriage of the South West Mail.

Because of the minuteness, the orthodox classification of this print was impossible. With dogged patience Hennessy searched for days through thousands of individual prints in the C.I.B. records until finally he came across the print he wanted — among those of Holl.

Social misfit

Hennessy‘s work was considered by fingerprint experts to be outstandingly brilliant. The story from that stage was told Mr. Justice Clancy and jury on Tuesday at Central Criminal Court, when Holl, said by Dr. E. A. Marsden, psychiatrist, to be a social misfit, was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.

Armed with the fingerprint identification of Holl, Det.-Sgt. D. G. Fergusson and Det. Krahe ( possibly F.C. KRAHE # 4530 ), of the C.I.B., interviewed tiny, attractive Mrs. Gloria Holl (17) at her home at Belmore Rd., Herne Bay.

The detectives then confronted Holl with the fact that he had not been home on the night of February 19 and next day had given Mrs. Holl £8, though he had been out of work for six weeks.

Eventually Holl confessed that he had shot and robbed Perkman. He said he had intended to ” do a couple of busts ” and had taken french leave with his brother’s rifle.

He had ” scaled ” on the Albury Mail train to Goulburn and was returning in the South- West Mail to Sydney when he shot Perkman.

Judge’s view

Dr. C. E. Percy, Government Medical Officer, said Perkman while lying asleep was apparently shot by Holl from a distance of between four and eight inches.

In a statement from the dock Holl admitted most of these things, then added he was not conscious of pulling the trigger.

That raised what Mr. Justice Clancy later told the jury was the only issue that stood between Holl and a guilty verdict, the defence of insanity at the time.

Called by Mr. F. W. Vizzard, the Public Defender, Dr. Marsden said Holl‘s whole history was that of a chronic mixed anxiety depressive state. Dr. Marsden said that, overcome by frenzy caused by Perkman‘s alleged attentions, Holl could have pulled the rifle trigger in a state of unconsciousness.

” No disorder “

Called in reply by Mr. L. C. Furnell, for the Crown, Dr. John McGeorge, consulting psychiatrist to the Attorney General’s Department, said his examination of Holl had failed to reveal any psychiatric disorder which would explain or excuse Holl‘s act.

The jury returned their verdict of guilty after half an hour’s retirement.

Mr. L. C. Furnell ( by the Clerk of the Peace ) for the Crown; Mr. F. W. Vizzard Public Defender ( by the Public Solicitor ) for Holl.

JONES ‘ JONESY ‘ RAYMOND ‘RAY’ of Thirroul

Passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on January 12, 2019.

Dearly loved father and father in law of Leanne and Scott, Melissa and Richard.

Much loved Grandpa of Lachlan, Mitchel, and Makayla.

Loved brother and brother in law of Alan, Barry, Denise, Edward and their families.

Will be missed by his dog ‘Freddie’.

Aged 85 Years

Forever in our Hearts

Always Loved and Sadly Missed

Reunited with Sheila

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ray’s funeral service to be held in the chapel, Parsons Funeral Home, 278 Princes Highway Bulli on Thursday January 17, 2019 at 12noon.

In lieu of flowers donations to Dementia Australia Research Foundation
would be appreciated.

After leaving the Northern Territory Police Force, due to injuries sustained from a Police Motor Cycle MVA, Ray moved to Fairy Meadow and later moved to Thirroul where he and his wife made their family home.
Ray had, at some stage, joined the’ Brown Bombers ‘, who were employed by the NSWPF as Parking Patrol Officers.
A change of uniform in the 1980’s saw Parking Patrol Officers, known by the nickname of ‘Brown Bombers’ ( because of the colour of their uniform ), become known as ‘Grey Ghosts’ because the colour was changed from Brown to a light Grey.
Ray was Stationed at Wollongong ( N.S.W. ) and during his stint at Wollongong, was known far and wide as a nice bloke who wasn’t too hard on those parking offenders ( if you happened to be at your car at the right time of course ).
Ray was seriously assaulted by an irate parking offender in Corrimal St, Wollongong, one day. So much so that Ray ended up in Wollongong Hospital due to his injuries.
Ray was a practical joker too. He just loved putting a Parking envelope under your wiper blade ( with nothing inside the envelope ) just because he knew it was your car.
Ray stay at Wollongong Police Station until he retired in August 1991 – mainly due to the fact that at this time in the NSW Police History, local councils were attempting ( and were successful ) as taking over the duties of Parking Patrol Officers.
Some left the employ of NSWPF and went over to the Councils whereas others, like Ray, were old enough to take Retirement.
