Fight at show to enter hall; police swept aside

Three thousand people fought and struggled to enter the Hall of Industries at the Showground today. Two nurses and two ambulance officers were rushed to the spot and treated 30 people who collapsed.

There were no serious cases, said Superintendent O’Sullivan, of Central District Ambulance. Large early-morning crowds had banked up and the crush occurred when opening of the hall was delayed for half an hour. Those early in the Hall of Industries queue arrived at 8.30 am. By 9.30 am, when the shutters were eventually pulled up, between 3000 and 4000 people were awaiting admittance. As the rollers moved, the crowd cheered and surged forward. Police standing along the doorway to regulate the crowd were swept backwards. Police re-formed, but again were swept aside by the milling crowd. Men, women and children pushed and struggled to enter the hall, which is the main one on the ground selling sample bags. Women and children were battered against the sides of the doors as they struggled to get in and the crowd behind pushed forward. It was the worst demonstration by a Show crowd since the opening last Saturday.

Situation “ugly”

Police, who finally opened the shutters, . described the crush as “ugly.” Constable Behringer, of Bondi, said: “When the shutters were opened, pressure from the huge crowd was terrific. “I picked up several children who fell to the floor, to prevent them being trampled upon and possibly seriously injured. ” I also helped several elderly women to safety.”

Police said even before they opened the hall, they admitted several old people and young children through a trapdoor. RAS secretary Colonel Somerville said: “Delay in opening the hall was because we had to clean it.” The late opening caused congestion which lasted for more than an hour. The huge hall was packed to capacity by a slow-moving mass of men, women and children, majority of them bent of buying samples. When the crowd stampeded into the Hail, many made for a stand selling chocolate samples.

In 20 minutes the stand had sold out. The crowd then turned and made for the exits, but was met by a further crush of people coming in the door. In the melee, sample bags were torn from the hands of some who got them, while others were trampled underfoot. Police formed a cordon around the stand and diverted crowds from it.

As the crowd increased throughout the day, it was a crush almost everywhere at the Show.

By early afternoon ambulance officers and nurses treated more than 100 men, women and children who had collapsed.

A high school student has reportedly suffered an aneurysm after an attack by a schoolyard bully.

Josh Lawrie, 15, was allegedly attacked last Monday at St Dominic’s College, a Catholic school in Kingswood, in western Sydney, Channel 7 News reported.

He was reportedly walking through the schoolyard at lunchtime and was punched from behind by a student, who has since been suspended.

He continued to be punched while face-down on the ground until a friend intervened, Channel 7 News said.

“The next thing I remember is being in the bathroom washing my face,” Josh said.

A police spokesman confirmed that Josh and his mother went to St Mary’s police station on Tuesday, the day after the incident, to report “an assault which is alleged to have occurred at a local high school”.

“After reporting the matter to police, the teen was taken to hospital by his mother for scans and treatment of head injuries,” the spokesman said.

Channel 7 News reported that the school initially sent Josh home with his mother Lynda Lawrie, rather than calling an ambulance.

The aneurysm only surfaced during later scans.

The teenager has since undergone brain surgery and will spend his school holidays in hospital.

“I’ve … got a major brain problem and he’s just going to get a suspension for that,” Josh told Channel 7 News.

“He’s wrecked my life and he’ll only get a slap on the wrist.

“I don’t think that’s really good enough,” he said.

Channel 7 News reported that Josh has been told by doctors that he won’t be able to play sport again and will have to take blood thinning medication for the rest of his life.

Josh has been repeatedly bullied at the school and his parents told Channel 7 News that they believe the offender should be held accountable.

Ms Lawrie said that the first thing she was asked when she brought her son to the hospital was why he wasn’t taken in by an ambulance.

His father Richard Lawrie said “young fellas have to realise what they are doing” and think about the consequences of their actions.

A police spokesman said: “Police have obtained a number of statements and are now conducting inquiries into the matter.”

The school has not released an official comment but told Channel 7 News that there are two sides to the story.

Sue possibly worked at Police HQ for several years & also worked at South Region Command when it was based at Sutherland before becoming an Executive Officer at Lake Illawarra LAC ( Warilla ) – but not Oak Flats I believe.

She retired about 2002 and was living at Kanahooka for a number of years before moving to Queensland where her daughter is living.

Sue was diagnosed with Cancer of the lung about 2015 and passed away on the evening of 2 March 2017 in Qld.

She is to be buried alongside of her parents at Rookwood Cemetery.

You were a lovely woman Sue.

Sue was also a proficient Ball Room dancer.  Her daughter was also involved in Ball Room dancing and Sue was also a judge in that field.

Bill James was a long time, and original V.I.P. who stated work out of the old Warilla Police Station ( Lake Illawarra LAC ) in 1996.

Bill retired from V.I.P’s prior to the Station being moved to Oak Flats.

Bill, upon retiring from his career job, applied for a VIP role at the suggestion of his wife.  He said he enjoyed his work with the police for a number of reasons.

I like everything about it – keeps me active and I like working with all the police and staff, they are a great crew.  This role has been eye-opening and I really appreciate all the work the police do.  It’s great to be able to help them out and my family are very pleased with what I do.
