Highly decorated former police officer Michael McGann passes away

Sydney’s southern suburbs lost a favourite son late last month, with the sudden death of highly decorated former police officer, Michael Patrick McGann.

Michael, often known as ‘Mick‘, died on the Gold Coast on November 29 ( 2019 ) after a short illness.

Son of Pat (dec) and Maureen, Michael spent his childhood in Sans Souci and Bexley and his school days at Marist Brothers Kogarah, before joining the NSW Police Force as a cadet in 1973 at the age of 17.

He was sworn in as a probationary constable two years later and served at stations around the St George area, including Hurstville, Peakhurst, Mortdale and Kingsgrove, which is where he began his detective training.

He worked with the Breaking Squad at the CIB in central Sydney as well as at Miranda before retiring from the force in 1991 after several years with the homicide unit.

In the following years, he worked as an investigator for the Queensland Criminal Justice Commission, the National Crime Authority, the Building Industries Task Force and the Department of Mineral Resources, as well as holding several high profile security positions in the private sector.

Police colleagues describe Michael as a highly respected and valued investigator as well as a man of courage, integrity and honour. During his career he received a number of top police awards for his work including the Commissioner’s Valour Award, the highest bravery award in the NSW Police.

It is obvious that such honours are not handed out lightly, and Michael was involved in a wide range of high profile investigations that helped keep his community safe, often at great personal risk.

Some of those situations included the 1988 arrest in Hurstville of armed bank robber, Stanley Shishova, the arrest of the Kareela cat burglar in 1984, and the Fathers’ Day bikie clash at Milperra’s Viking Tavern the same year where seven people died and 21 were injured. Michael was one of the first on the scene.

He was injured eight times during his career, including having acid poured on his back – acid so corrosive it destroyed his service pistol. He also suffered lifelong problems after being badly injured in one knee when a faulty home made gun discharged.

Michael’s funeral service included a eulogy delivered by long-time friend and colleague, Brian Harding, and a full honour guard provided by the NSW Police Force. Around 200 people attended the service including numerous friends from Sydney and past and serving officers from NSW Police.

He is survived by his partner Jill Courtney, mother Maureen, daughter Rhiannon, and brothers Paul and Peter. Michael was 63.

Man Fined £5

A 20-years-old Corrimal carpenter who punched a policeman and thought he was still fighting another man was fined a total of £15 yesterday.

The carpenter; Eric Blain, of Robson Street, Corrimal, pleaded guilty to three charges in the Wollongong Petty Sessions.

He was charged with offensive behaviour in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, Church Street, Wollongong, on November 23, assaulting Constable Lindsay John Gordon and resisting arrest.

Constable Gordon said he pushed his way through a crowd at the dance in the Soldiers’ Hall and found Blain and another man fighting. He said he told them to ” break it up: ‘

” COUPLE OF SWINGS “

Blain had taken a ” couple of swings at him and hit him on the side of the face and body, the constable added. When he attempted to arrest Blain, Blain had resisted violently, the constable said. The other man had disappeared into the crowd, he added.

The constable told Mr. E. Beale, for Blain, that investigations had revealed the other man had struck first. He agreed that Blain may have thought he was still fighting the other man. Mr. J. Fleeman, S.M., fined Blain £5 on each charge.

HILDER, John Richard Bertram “Jack” | Death Notices | Sydney | Daily Telegraph

Barry Lewis 16 March 2017
Embarrassing moments.
Back in the day (1970s) when I was doing my ‘A’ list at Lidcombe Detectives I was partnered up with a very ‘Old School’ Detective Sergeant named Jack Hilder. Never before and never since have I worked with anyone who could consume Alcohol like him.
Jack was suffering from a hangover from a stint at the Catholic Club the night before and we had to do an inquiry in the very posh suburb of South Strathfield where Big houses and money were the norm.
We were invited into this very big home by a very posh middle aged Lady who wore diamond earrings and pearls and stepped into a very large Hallway with cloakrooms and ‘powder rooms’ off to left and right. Jack says to the Posh lady “Can I use your Toilet please, the Constable will start taking the details”.
I take out my notebook as Jack enters the ‘Powder room’ but only half closes the door. As I’m talking to the lady I hear the sound of Jack peeing into the middle of the water in the toilet. It sounded like a Cart horse peeing into a bucket of water. The lady and I just looked at each other, she with her mouth open and suddenly her eyes opened even wider and she gasped as this extremely loud FART emanated from the Powder room and resonated throughout the hallway.
Jack then came out still zipping up his fly. I don’t know who was the more embarrassed, her or me.

Overview of Liverpool ‘I’ District Bulls Police Rugby League Football Club, later known as the Macarthur Bulls Police Rugby League Football Club.

Liverpool ‘I’ District Police Rugby League was an inaugural member of the NSW Police Rugby League Competition formed in 1970.

The teams later competed annually for the ‘Fred Hanson Shield’ – he was Police Commissioner 1972 to 1976.

The team was co-ordinated from the Liverpool Detectives Office by Detective Sergeants Leo Purcell, Jack Hilder and assisted by Detective Senior Constable Pat Casey.

Another local, Detective Sergeant Frank Owens was a keen supporter of the Police Rugby League, but sadly he suffered a heart attack and died whilst watching a game at Moore Park, in May 1970.

Liverpool Detectives decided to donate a ‘Shield’ honouring Frank Owens, which they named the ‘Frank Owens Memorial Best and Fairest Trophy’.

Mrs Owens attended the Clubs presentation nights for several years presenting the trophy in memory of her husband.

Around 1975, the Club was co-ordinated from Green Valley Police Station by Mel Clews, Fred Whitton, Barry Ryan, Alan Stephens, Mick Rees, Colin Cameron and Stephen Reeves.

The ‘Frank Owens Shield‘ remained until 1989, when a new shield was struck honouring Constable 1/c. Mark Burns, a former player who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle collision, whilst on duty.

The shield was donated by Stephen Reeves and named the ‘Mark Shrimpy Burns Memorial Best and Fairest Shield‘ and was presented until 2019.

Although the grave stone indicates that he is ” At Rest Middlingbank, Eucumbene, NSW “

Middlingbank is located about the intersection of the Middlingbank Rd and Slacks Creek Rd – about 2 kms from Buccanderra Caravan Park on Lake Eucumbene, NSW.

It is ‘assumed’ & most probable ( that Selina is his mother because of the age difference ),

his Mother – Selina May MARTIN ( nee THOMPSON )( Born 1913 – Died 1988 ) is located in the grave at the head of his Marker at Big Hill, that Peter was Cremated and his Ashes scattered at Eucumbene at a location they called Middlingbank and that Peter’s Marker ( at the foot of Selina’s grave ) is a Cenotaph.

Selina May MARTIN 01 - nee Thompson - possible mother of Peter James MARTIN - NSWPF 1440

Recently, in October 2024, I was again driving aimlessly in Goulburn PAC area and came across this graveyard.

I actually forgot that I have been here back in 2006.

I took a new photo of the Grave Plate and Plot and have now done, as much as I can, as a Memorial Post.

SUNDAY 9 APRIL 2006

In the yard of a small Church at a place called ( Goulburn Police Patrol ) ‘BIG HILL’ WE STOPPED AT A CHURCH AND TOOK A FEW GRAVE PHOTOS IN THE Cemetery BEFORE HEADING OVER TO TARALGA AND THEN BACK TO GOULBURN.

THIS PLAQUE HAS THE NSW POLICE CREST BADGE ON THE UPPER LEFT CORNER. I DON’T KNOW THE STORY BEHIND IT AT THIS STAGE.

020108:  Note added:

We were driving around aimlessly one day (090406) in the depth of Goulburns’ Patrol and we came upon this small Church at a place called ‘Big Hill’.  Nothing there except for this Church and a few headstones.

One of the headstones had the NSW Police Crest on it – together with another Crest – which is the Free Masons Crest. Even though it is relatively a new grave – the fact that it has the NSW Police Crest was interesting.

I have no idea who he was, where he was Stationed etc or what the reference to Eucumbene is. I assumed that he has a Head Stone at ‘Big Hill’ (Goulburn / Taralga) but is buried at Eucumbene.

But Peter James Martin was only 53 when he died and died on New Years Eve.   I did a “Google” search on him but didn’t find any information on him.

Plaque location:  row 5  plot 7
