Coroner calls for recreational diving industry to be regulated

A Sydney coroner has recommended stricter regulation for the diving industry, saying the time for self-regulation has long passed.

Police officer Edward Van Putten accidentally drowned in December 2004 while on a recreational dive with a group of colleagues off Sydney’s South Head.

The Glebe Coroner’s Court was told that Mr Van Putten was a very large man who needed twice as much oxygen as the average diver.

But he did not tell anyone on the dive of his special needs, and was given an oxygen tank that was too small.

Deputy state coroner Dorell Pinch has found that the 53-year-old’s needs were not recorded in his dive logbook, and that no-one on the dive assumed the role of supervisor.

The industry is covered by a voluntary code of practice, but the coroner has now recommended that it should come under the authority of WorkCover.

Police officer found dead in Surry Hills

A NSW Police officer has been found dead in the city’s inner-east. Police Commissioner Karen Webb has visited the station to console devastated colleagues.

A NSW Police officer has been found dead in Surry Hills.

It is understood colleagues found the officer’s body inside the Sydney Police Centre in Goulburn Street early on Monday morning.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb visited the station to console the officer’s devastated colleagues following the incident.

In a statement, police said:

“Early this morning, a 52-year-old Senior Constable was found deceased at the Sydney Police Centre at Goulburn Street.

“Initial inquiries indicate the man’s death is not suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

“A critical incident investigation is underway.

Commissioner Webb said in a statement: “this is a very sad day for the NSW Police Force”.

“Our hearts go out to the officer’s family.

“Every support will be made available for staff and family impacted by this tragedy.”

NEW INSPECTOR FOR PORT STEPHENS-HUNTER PD

A new senior officer will start his duties today, as Inspector Daniel Skelly opts for a sea change and takes over as the officer-in-charge of the Raymond Terrace sector.

Inspector Skelly has moved from Dubbo up to the Port Stephens-Hunter PD, as Chief Inspector Al Janson ( # 28475 ) takes up a position further south on the Central Coast.

Inspector Skelly says he is looking forward to getting to know the local community and improving the liveability of the area.

“I’m eager to start and take on the role of Raymond Terrace OIC, whilst looking at parts of customer service to help ensure the community receives the best service when dealing with local police.”

Commander, Superintendent Gillies, would like to thank Chief Inspector Janson for his years of service and wealth of knowledge at Port Stephens-Hunter PD and wishes him all the best with his new appointment.

Dan Skelly says he didn’t want to move here, but now calls Dubbo home.

DAN SKELLY leaves Dubbo after five years as a police inspector working in the Orana Mid-western Police District.

From a media perspective, he’s taken phone calls night and day, on or off-duty and has been willing to help at any time to get the best messages out to the community.

He’s also been involved in plenty of behind the scenes community work and he’ll be sorely missed by the many people he’s assisted, on the job or not, during that time.

Most cops who grow up on the coast don’t put in transfers to come out west, where the summers are hot and the beaches are, almost non-existent.

Inspector Dan Skelly hadn’t heard of Dubbo’s Sandy Beach until he arrived in town so after having Newcastle and the Central Coast beaches his playground, he didn’t think much of it.

“I was transferred into Dubbo from Wyong and when I first got here, being a boy from Newcastle, my goal was to get back. Every time I’d travel back to the coast I’d pass the 100k speed sign at the bottom of Mugga Hill thinking, ‘one day I’m going to pass this for the last time’.

“Five years later it’s a different ball game. I’ve called Dubbo my home, I’ve got my immediate family here, my wife and my son, but when I pass that sign this week going back to work on the coast I’ll pass it with a heavy heart because I’ve been privileged to work with some great people in Dubbo and I’ve also been privileged to make friends with a lot of good people,” he said.

He said Dubbo’s community vibe has really hit home, with so many locals he’s met who spend so much of their time working for the betterment of the city rather than for their own personal gain.

He says that volunteer work makes the city far more liveable.

“When I first came here I couldn’t wait to go. Now, I wish I could stay,” he said.

Inspector Skelly said it’s a story you hear from so many police who grew up in Sydney or along the coast and then get told they’ll be working west of the Sandstone Curtain. They loathe those travelling orders but then after being thrown in the deep end, they make it work better than they ever believed possible.

He says while it can be difficult initially, being transferred as part of the job can be a blessing in disguise, forcing you out of your comfort zone and never regretting it.

“I’d never been to Dubbo in my life. I had to look on the internet to see the best way to get here, but yes, it does force you out of your comfort zone and it makes you go out and experience other things, it becomes the new normal in your life,” he said.

Dan Skelly is leaving town not for a promotion or the prospect of an exciting new job, but for medical reasons.

He had a sudden and surprising diagnosis of Leukemia in December last year and he’s preparing for a stint at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital next month for treatment.

“Because of that treatment I’ll be off work for six months and the police have been kind enough to transfer me back to the Newcastle area where all my extended family live,” he said.

“The support I’ve had has been tremendous. I can’t speak highly enough of my boss, superintendent Peter McKenna and western commander Geoff McKechnie, all the senior management staff at Dubbo and all the troops at Dubbo police station have all been fantastic with their support.

“All the other people that I’ve met in the community have also been great, they’ve really rallied and been very interested in my progress during this time of adversity,” he said.

Inspector Skelly said he’ll get better, and he’ll be back, waiting until the travelling and gathering restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have eased.

“When all the embargoes have been lifted as far as social distancing is concerned, I certainly will be having a few drinks with some people back here in Dubbo,” he said.

“Where I come from in Newcastle, I was lucky enough to grow up when it was still really a large country town and people had attitudes similar to those in Dubbo where everyone says g’day as they walk down the street.

“The good part of the community here is 100 per cent behind the police. People are always there willing to help us, it’s just a different and slower pace of life out here that I’ve become accustomed to and really cherish,” he said.

The Northern Territory Police Force is today mourning the loss of one of its serving members.

Yesterday, Christmas Day, one of our Darwin based officers passed away while on leave at Daly River.

This is a deeply distressing time for the officer’s family and colleagues, and in accordance with the wishes of the member’s family, we will not be releasing the officer’s name.

On behalf of the Northern Territory Police Force, I extend our deepest condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and loved ones.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this difficult time.

We also wish to reassure the community that the death is not being treated as suspicious and we ask that the media respect the family’s privacy and allow them the space they need to grieve.

Support services are being provided to those within the Northern Territory Police family who have been impacted by this loss.

A cop is fighting for her life after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer just months after giving birth to her first child.

Detective Sergeant Nicole Finch, from Sydney, was on maternity leave after giving birth in August when she was diagnosed with stage four cancer.

NSW Police are rallying around her to help raise funds to support her as she undergoes treatment.

‘[She is] undergoing urgent treatment in hospital,’ Inspector Alison Beeche wrote in a NSW Police Legacy fundraising page.

‘Funds raised will go directly to supporting Nicole’s treatment, providing much needed support to her family, and establishing a brighter future for her son.’

Detective Sergeant Finch joined the NSW Police Force in 2005 and was stationed at Cabramatta before becoming a detective four years later.

She was promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant in 2017 before going on to work in State Crime Command in areas including Drug Squad, Chemical Operations Team, Crime Operations and Financial Crime.

Earlier this year, she moved to her current role in People Strategy and Engagement, where she works in the newly created Career Advisory Team as a Career Advisor.

The fundraiser has been shared hundreds of times since it was launched on Tuesday.

Detective sergeant Finch‘s sister Kim shared an update on her sibling’s treatment on Tuesday, revealing the family is grateful for the support of the friends and the community.

‘Round two – Here we go,’ she wrote on Facebook.

‘We will fight and win this round also.

‘Our hearts are broken and our lives are torn apart at this news. But we have hope, faith and love and the support of our family and friends that will help us fight along the way!’

Members of Sloths Dragonboat racing club in Pyrmont, where the detective sergeant is a competitive paddler, have also rallied to get behind the cause.

Fellow paddler Andrew Chan urged members of the community to help support her as she faces the fight of her life.

‘She is the 23rd member of the successful Opens crew whilst Nic drummed through the season,’ he wrote.

‘If you are able, please support her and her family!’

Former police officer Anthony Loxley ( # 38198 ) also urged members of the public to assist detective sergeant Finch during this tough time.

‘Please help this great mum and Sgt of Police if you can,’ he wrote.

The fundraiser has attracted more than $16,700 in 24 hours – smashing its $5000 goal.

Kalem Joshua SARAS - 2022 — Kalem Joshua SARAS – 2022

Just three months ago at the young age of 28, our dear friend Kalem was diagnosed with stage and grade 4 cancer, turning his own life and the lives of those close to him upside down.

He was recently married 2 years ago to the love of his life and just bought his own home a year ago. He is also a loving husband, son, brother, and friend to so many, as well as a dedicated police officer who has spent his life serving and looking out for others, including many of us. Now, he is facing the toughest battle of his life.

There is hope in the form of a clinical trial drug, even if it just gives him more time, but unfortunately Kalem has not been able to secure a place in the trial and is unlikely to do so. However, we can still access the drug privately, but each dose costs $10,000 AUD and must be taken every three weeks. To see if the treatment is effective, he needs between 3 to 5 doses. There is also a chance that access to the drug will be denied depending on other medical factors. If this is the case, all donations will go towards helping the Saras/Fuda family with other treatment options and costs or be refunded as per Gofundme T&C’s.

Kalem is one of the best individuals we all know – his kindness, dedication to those around him, and strength are unmatched, and every dollar raised will go directly towards giving him a fighting chance.

We did it, and we did it together. $50,000 raised in just 3 days was unimaginable before the weekend started, and it is the reality today as the response from everyone has been nothing short of amazing. We cannot thank you all enough, and the Saras/Fuda family are also extremely grateful, as are all extended family and friends.

We should have an update on Kalem in the next week or two, pending the results of a liver test where we are hoping to see reduced Bilirubin levels. Updates will be posted here on the campaign site, so please keep an eye out for those.

An off-duty police officer has been killed in a car crash on the NSW South Coast, leaving his heartbroken family paying tribute to their ‘superhero’.

Carl Wilkinson, 37, was driving alone the Princes Highway, at East Lynne, about 1.30pm on Thursday when his ute collided with a truck.

Mr Wilkinson died at the scene while the 57-year-old male truck driver, who was not injured, was taken to Batemans Bay Hospital for mandatory testing.

Mr Wilkinson served the community as a Senior Constable for NSW Police.

He is survived by his partner Madeleine Cox and three children. A heartbroken Ms Cox has posted to social media about her loss.

‘I lost my partner, the love of my life I was lucky enough to meet, and the father of our three beautiful baby boys,’ she wrote.

The family had only just moved to Batemans Bay the week before the crash.

Ms Cox sought help to find Mr Wilkinson’s guitar, which he had recently donated to a local church without her knowledge.

‘I am reaching out to see if anyone in the community knows who may have bought his guitar so that I could purchase it back off them?

‘I am no good at playing but he loved when I played only for him (I still have my guitar), he thought my voice was the most beautiful thing he had ever heard – I would strongly disagree.

‘But please I would love to find this so I can play to him once more Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. I will pay anything for it.’

A reply to the post said the guitar had since been found.

Ms Cox described her partner as ‘my love, my mate, my angel, our superhero’.

A page on crowdfunding platform mycause has been set up to support the family, with $21,400 raised so far.

‘With much devastation to Maddie and three gorgeous boys, losing Carl unexpectedly – a beautiful partner and father,’ wrote page creator Jo Thompson.

‘Please help support and donate to this beautiful family that needs this the most at this devastating time.’

Princes Highway closed in both direction at East Lynne following fatal car crash

Police have closed the main road on the NSW South Coast after a motorist died in a crash involving a truck.

NSW Police said they were called to the Princes Highway at East Lynne, north of Maidens Road at 1:30pm after receiving reports of a crash involving a ute and a truck.

The driver of the ute, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The male truck driver avoided injury and has been taken to Batemans Bay Hospital for mandatory testing.

Police attached to the South Coast District have launched an investigation into the crash.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Princes Highway has been closed in both directions causing significant traffic delays.

South of the crash site, a line of vehicles more than four kilometres long is waiting for the road to be cleared.

The crashed occurred 30 kilometres south of Ulladulla in a mobile phone reception black spot.

Light vehicles can use a diversion via Braidwood Road and at Nowra Hill then down the the Kings Highway to Batemans Bay.

Oversized vehicles are being advised to use the Hume Highway.

Just one of our stories I need to share..

Carl moved here from Sydney after growing up in Bathurst, I moved here from Cronulla 6 months before him.. then we met. 01.01.2018.

On our second ever date I brought him to our farm to meet my parents (we knew we were each others forever on the first date) and he pointed out a painting in the shed of an angel Standing proud, strong with long hair and beautiful white wings looking to the sky.

He asked where we got it.

I said my mum likes to collect things from the tip and op shops.

He said he painted it when he was 16, and that it has C.wilko in the bottom corner.

We were all in shock.

It is with a heavy heart that the South Coast Police District acknowledges the loss of one of our own.

Detective Senior Constable Carl Wilkinson was tragically killed in a motor vehicle collision on the Princes Highway last Thursday afternoon.

Carl was a dedicated and extremely well-regarded officer who had served the community well since joining the NSWPF in 2009.

Carl joined the South Coast Police District team in 2017 and spent time in General Duties, the Proactive Crime Team and Criminal Investigation as part of the Batemans Bay Detectives office. An intelligent, diligent and very likeable man who was passionate about being a police officer and keeping the community safe.

More importantly, he was a beloved Son, Brother, Partner, Father and friend. The shock of his untimely loss is being felt deeply by those left behind, none more so than his family. Carl leaves behind a partner and three beautiful young boys whose lives have just changed forever. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with his family, friends and colleagues.

A life of such promise left unfinished. Thank you for your service.

On 2 October, 1970 Detective Constable Ware was part of a specially formed squad attempting to apprehend an armed and dangerous rapist who had been operating in the Sutherland area.

A decoy car was set up at Loftus Oval with a number of police both inside it and surrounding it in the darkness. During the stakeout one of the police could not be contacted on his portable radio and when the decoy vehicle left the oval for a short time Detective Ware went to find out what had happened.

As he neared the man with the faulty radio he was mistaken for the rapist and shot. Detective Ware had not answered when challenged and almost walked over the man on the ground. Visibility and conditions were extremely poor at the time. The detective constable was conveyed to the Sutherland District Hospital where he died a short time later.

The constable was born in 1937 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 16 August, 1965.

From the 3 October 1970 until 12 October 1970, Detective Constable 1st Class Jan. ( John ) STANIOCH ( # 11333 ) was on loan to the “Revesby Rapist Task Force” to replace Detective Denis WARE.

Denis initially joined the NSW Police Force on 27 February 1961 and after Resigning, re-joined again on the 16 August 1965.

Detective killing: police are silent

SYDNEY, Monday. — A high-level inquiry into the fatal shooting of a young detective continued today, but senior officers refused to say what progress had been made.

Detective Constable Denis Robert Ware, 24, a special duties officer, of Sutherland police station, was shot dead during a “stake-out” last Friday night.

It is believed Detective Ware was shot by another detective who had seen movement in the bushes, where Ware was hiding.

Surrounding ‘decoy’ car

The police were surrounding a “decoy” car in bush land in an attempt to catch a rapist who has recently attacked courting couples in the area.

A young policeman and a policewoman sat in the decoy car pretending to be lovers.

A CIB riot squad detective with an automatic pump-action shotgun crouched behind them in the back seat.

Within minutes of the shooting Police Commissioner Allan had ordered CIB Superintendent Lendrum to the scene to start an immediate investigation.

Today the investigation was still continuing under Detective Inspector W. G. Clyne.

Funeral of shot policeman held

SYDNEY, Tuesday.

Detective Constable Denis Robert Ware was buried at Woronora Cemetery today.

Detective Ware died last Friday night during a police attempt to catch a rapist at Loftus in a lover’s lane, known as “Mad Mile”.

A police officer fired three shots, one of which hit Detective Ware in the chest.

A departmental inquiry is under way and a coroner’s court hearing is to be conducted.

The Police Commissioner, Mr Allan, the Metropolitan Superintendent, Mr. E. Lynch, and the chief of the CIB, Detective Superintendent R. Lendrum, were among those at the funeral.

Many of Detective Ware’s police friends and private friends attended.

Brendan tragically lost his life in a motorbike accident near Glen Innes while participating in the Wall to Wall Ride, a charity event honouring fallen officers across Australia.

With 28 years of dedicated service, Brendan was a District Duty Officer on the Gold Coast and previously the Operations Leader of Central Patrol Group. Known for his leadership, quick wit, and unwavering commitment to the community, he was deeply respected by his colleagues and loved ones.

Our thoughts are with Brendan’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time. We will continue to honour his service and legacy, and as his family has requested, the Wall to Wall Ride will continue in his memory.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is deeply saddened to confirm the death of Senior Sergeant Brendan Wiblen, 58, following a single-vehicle motorbike crash near Glen Innes in New South Wales yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Wiblen was participating in the annual Wall to Wall Ride charity event, which honours fallen police officers across Australia, at the time of the tragic incident.

With a distinguished career spanning 28 years after joining the Queensland Police on March 11, 1996, Senior Sergeant Wiblen served as a District Duty Officer stationed at the Gold Coast. Prior to this, he held several key roles within the Service, including Operations Leader of Central Patrol Group, where he was known for his leadership and commitment to the community.

South Eastern Region Assistant Commissioner Brian Swan expressed his deepest sympathies to Senior Sergeant Wiblen’s loved ones and colleagues.

“Our thoughts are with Brendan’s loved ones, who are dealing with this tragic loss. The police family stands together in grief and will continue to support Brendan’s family during this unimaginable time.

“Brendan was a dedicated officer who served with distinction throughout his career. He was highly thought of by his colleagues and was known for his attention to detail and quick wit. His service to the community will not be forgotten, and our thoughts are with all those who knew Brendan during this incredibly difficult time,” Assistant Commissioner Swan said.

Commissioner Steve Gollschewski offered his condolences to all who have been impacted by Senior Sergeant Wiblen’s tragic loss.

“The Service stands in solidarity with Brendan’s family, friends and colleagues to provide support during this time of grief,” Commissioner Gollschewski said.

“It is absolutely devastating that Brendan lost his life during an event honouring our fallen members.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our entire Service, particularly for Brendan’s colleagues on the Gold Coast, who worked closely with him day in and day out. His passing will have a significant impact on officers who not only valued his leadership but also considered him as a dear friend.”

Gold Coast police officer dies near Glen Innes during motorcycle Wall to Wall Ride for Remembrance

A veteran Gold Coast police officer has been killed in a crash on an annual police remembrance ride for members who have died in the line of duty.

Gold Coast district duty officer Brendan Wiblen was an avid motorcyclist and had served with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) since 1996.

Senior Sergeant Wiblen died in the single vehicle crash on the Wall to Wall Ride for Remembrance near Glen Innes in New South Wales on Wednesday.

Senior Sergeant Wiblen’s family say they wish for the officers to finish the ride.

The Queensland group left from Brisbane for Canberra on Wednesday.

New South Wales Police said the crash happened about 3:20pm on the Gwydir Highway as the 58-year-old motorcyclist attempted to overtake another rider, lost control and went down an embankment.

“Members of the public administered CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived, however, the man died at the scene,” they said.

Top brass pay tribute

QPS said in a statement Senior Sergeant Wiblen had a distinguished career holding roles including officer in charge at Southport Station.

South Eastern Region Assistant Commissioner Brian Swan expressed his deepest sympathies to Senior Sergeant Wiblen’s loved ones and colleagues.

Tributes in Queensland parliament

The Queensland Premier Steven Miles has expressed his condolences to the family of the officer in parliament today.

Police Minister Mark Ryan also told parliament “life can be cruel in the most shockingly unexpected ways”.

“This morning like so many Queenslanders I’m struggling to come to terms with the loss of a much-loved member of the QPS,” he said.

“It is almost beyond comprehension that this off-duty officer should lose his life just as he is engaged in a memorial event in honour of other fallen police officers.

“For the officer’s family, this must be the most extraordinarily difficult time.

“I know that the police family will offer them every support and I know too that there will be every support for the officer’s colleagues and friends who were riding with him.

“This is a tragedy on so many levels. A family has lost a loved one, police have lost a colleague, and Queensland has lost a dedicated police officer.”

Union says healing will ‘take time’

Queensland Police Union President Shane Prior was on the memorial ride.

He said the loss was being felt deeply across the state.

“Today our hearts are heavy,” Mr Prior said.

“All of our colleagues are devastated, the colleagues on the Wall to Wall but also our colleagues around the state. This is going to take a long time to heal.

“Our pain, however, is really insignificant when we think about his family today.

He said NSW police will investigate.

A report will be prepared for the NSW coroner and officers from New England Police District have begun an investigation into what happened.

“It is so sad that one of our colleagues has lost his life, but we know that everything that could’ve been done to save his life was done,” Mr Prior said.
