The Australian Federal Police was today informed of the death of former Commissioner Major General Ronald Alwyn Grey AO DSO (Retd)Major General Grey was appointed as the second Commissioner of the AFP in February 1983 after a distinguished 35-year career in the Australian Defence Force.

Major General Grey played a significant role in expanding the AFP’s International Liaison Network from four to 12 countries during his tenure. The network now has AFP representatives in 33 countries and continues to play an important part in the AFP’s mission to combat serious organised crime.

Major General Grey endorsed a drive to modernise police methodology, with his term as Commissioner including the introduction of significant legislative reforms in the areas of telephone interceptions, proceeds of crime and cash transaction reports. The AFP undertook Operation Lavender during his tenure, a drug seizure that culminated in the arrest of 20 offenders in August 1985 and the dismantling of a major criminal enterprise involved in drug trafficking.

Major General Grey also led significant reforms in ACT Policing which resulted in reductions in property-related crime and the expansion of the Neighbourhood Watch program.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said Major General Grey was critical in leading the early development of the AFP into the world-leading law enforcement agency it is today. He served five years as Commissioner during the organisation’s formative years.

“It was during his tenure that the AFP significantly expanded the number of officers in offshore liaison roles to better combat the criminal threats targeting our country, and his emphasis on the value of criminal intelligence to target organised crime is a legacy that continues to this day.

“The AFP and Australia owes Major General Grey a great deal of thanks for ensuring the safety of the community we live and work in.

“I extend our condolences to Major General Grey’s family at this sad time, but also our appreciation for everything he did for this country throughout his accomplished career.”

Gen R.A.Grey, DSO, MID

57011 Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Alwyn GREY

Distinguished Service Order (DSO)

Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Grey graduated from the Royal Military College on 12 December 1951 and was allotted to the Royal Australian Infantry. After a number of staff and regimental appointments both in Australia and overseas, he was appointed on 25 November 1968 as Commanding Officer, 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment and arrived in Vietnam on 23 February 1970.

Lieutenant Colonel Grey has commanded his Battalion with distinction during its tour of duty in Vietnam. His tactical application together with his personal knowledge of the capacity of his officers, junior leaders and his soldiers, have enabled him to gain the maximum result from his force at all times.

From 3 August 1970 until 10 September 1970, Lieutenant Colonel Grey’s Battalion was engaged in Operation Cung Chung II in Southern Phuoc Tuy Province. Lieutenant Colonel Grey’s skilful and tenacious handling of the force in all areas allotted to him caused the enemy to lose control of the population centres in the 7th Battalion area.

Following a sub?unit contact on 30 December 1970, Lieutenant Colonel Grey rapidly redeployed elements of his force to cover probable enemy withdrawal routes. This timely action together with his knowledge of the enemy, the terrain and his force’s capabilities subsequently caused a major defeat to be inflicted on an enemy unit from which it is unlikely to recover for some time.

His tireless energy, devotion to duty, personal courage and tactical skill have shown him to be an outstanding Commander and his leadership of the Battalion has been in the highest tradition of his Regiment and the Australian Army.

Gen R.A.Grey, DSO, MID

I have never met Selwyn Smith BUT I have, for over twenty years, been seeing one of his colleagues in the field of psychiatry.

I have never heard a bad word about Selwyn and if he is anything like the bloke I have been seeing for twenty years, Selwyn’s is a man to be honoured and respected for the way in which he cared for, and looked after – not only damaged police but all First Responders.

You received your Cancer diagnoses only in October 2021 and eventually had to rest up because of fatigue in November 2021.

You worked tirelessly to ensure that your patients were looked after and, on behalf of all First Responders ( ESPECIALLY the Members of NSWPF, I express my personal and sincere thanks to you and your family for the time that you gave all of my fellow work mates ( whether I knew them or not ) in your efforts to help, and save, them from the demons of PTSD / PTSI.

Your family and friends need to know that you were regarded as a bloody good mate to so many Police, and other First Responders, who were suffering PTSD / PTSI and you managed to pull a lot of them out of that dark pit that they were in for so many years.

Rest In Peace Selwyn.  Your Duty is now done.

Selwyn SMITH, Doctor Selwyn SMITH, Dtr Selwyn SMITH

Very sad news from the St John Of God with the passing of Dr Selwyn Smith.
Although Selwyn was not a police officer or a first responder, he ( as a psychiatrist ) understood the plight that most first responders suffered with their mental ( and physical ) health and the many, unfounded and unnecessary, hoops that insurance companies make us jump through.
He was a very thoughtful man and an outstanding health care professional with the St John of God Hospital PTSD programs and his many, many patients.
Dr Smith understood emergency services and mental injuries and advocated for us when it felt like no one else did.
He was a brilliant psychiatrist and held in the highest esteem amongst his clients and his peers.
Dr Smith had literally only just retired before last Christmas ( 2021 ) due to his terminal illness ( cancer ) and our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and the countless people he has saved and helped throughout the years.
Rest In Peace.

some of the Comments from various Policing Facebook Groups & pages:

He helped me to turn around from a very broken ambo with work induced PTSI and the St John of God program was a BIG part of that. With his support to try to return to operational duties, I did another 8 years full-time and now 3 years part time. If others had their way, I would have got the boot. Selwyn went to bat for me after listening to me.
I wish he had longer in retirement after helping so many of us.

*******

I found out yesterday it’s a sad loss , he was a great doctor for people with ptsd and would fight with the insurance companies to make sure we got the right treatment we need

*******

I’m struggling to find a replacement too. Can some inbox me some suggestions.
Also devastating news today of his passing on Monday.
I guess he didn’t leave us because he wanted to..  he truly worked with all of us till the very end.

******

I’m sad to hear that Dr Selwyn-Smith passed away today. Those who know of his work as Psychiatrist will really feel this. I have a heavy heart! His work at St John of God was invaluable.

******

Best wishes Selwyn. You shared my contempt for heartless management practices and you greatly helped me along with countless others. Stay strong.

******

Selwyn’s office are in the process of sending out letters to his patients. I spoke to them two days ago and my January appointment was cancelled. Retired immediately due to serious health issue. I’ve been told he is completing all outstanding reports.

******

Sad news he was a man that cared about his patients and took on NSW Police Department for many of us. He became a friend and helped me through some dark times. RIP Selwyn

RIP Doc you helped so many of us in our time of need you will be always be remembered by us. God Bless R.I.P

Our dearest Selwyn, hearing of your illness and your sudden passing has left me and so very many people with the heart that is hurting beyond words. You are an amazing man who dedicated so many many years to helping so many people. I know all of us in the emergency services and correctives have been helped by you immensely and that will never be forgotten. The best thing I ever did was take the words of a very close friend of mine who was treated by yourself was to go and see yourself and Fotoula. I cherish the words you said to me and they were, “I will fix you“. I will continue to carry those words with me everyday. You bought me so far in the two years I had been seeing you, you lit up my life each time I came to see you as I knew I was in good hands and you lived by those words you said to me.
Like so many people we will all miss you terribly and we can not thank you for all you have done for so many.
Love to you, your precious family and friends.

Dr Smith – I’ll never forget what you did for me or countless other people in saving our lives. I’ll never forget you sitting there saying, “Don’t worry, we’ll get you there.” I’ll never forget the change of tone in your voice when having to deal with the dreaded insurance company.
Forever in your debt.

Dr Smith was one in a billion. He saved my life and was like a guardian angel to me.
Most compassionate and caring doctor, he always had a smile for everyone and genuinely cared for his patients. He said he wasn’t going to retire on us anytime soon and he didn’t..working till the end and caring for his patients ???? Sadly, he didn’t even get to enjoy his retirement.
I was devastated to hear of his sudden medical retirement, however hearing about his passing just broke my heart ????
My condolences to the family and all of his patients.
He will be missed and it is truly a huge loss to all of us as he is irreplaceable.
May he rest in peace and God grant him a place in heaven, because he deserves his place amongst the angels ????
Goodbye Dr Smith, you will never be forgotten and I’m eternally grateful for everything you have done for me and my family ????????

After Retiring from the employ of NSWPF, Jason ran the successful family business of Seaside First Aid Training at Port Macquarie.

https://www.seasidefirstaidtraining.com.au/

Jason is survived by his wife Debbie Bryant; children Joshua Bryant, Danni Mackay & Taylor Bryant; and mother Margo Bryant.

Debbie Bryant is also the name of Ashley Bryant‘s wife.

Jason is the brother of retired member Ashley Bryant (deceased 16 Dec 2013).

Tribute: Port Macquarie’s Jason Bryant remembered

The 55-year-old passed away suddenly on January 9.

Mr Bryant was active within the Port Macquarie-Hastings community – including through his employment within the police force, and as a member of the Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club.

Tacking Point SLSC president Mick Lang said Mr Bryant was an extreme waterman and arguably one of the best Inflatable Rescue Boat drivers on the Mid North Coast.

Mr Bryant put his rescue skills into action when he was involved in a mass rescue on the Hastings River in 1999.

Mr Bryant, who was a Senior Constable at the time, utilised an inshore rescue boat and with a colleague’s assistance, continually entered the most hazardous section of the bar.

They rescued members of the Port Macquarie Sea Rescue group, who had been thrown from their boat.

As a result of his efforts, he received the New South Wales Police Service‘s most coveted honour, the Peter Stuckey Mitchell Award in 2000.

Mr Bryant met his wife Deborah when he was 18-years-old and they were married for 33 years.

The couple had three childrenJoshua, Danielle, and Taylor.

The family enjoyed annual trips to the Gold Coast and spent time at the local beaches and rivers in the Port Macquarie-Hastings.

Mr Bryant served in the NSW Police force for 20 years and he was stationed at Armidale, Byron Bay and Port Macquarie.

After leaving the force, Mr Bryant worked in a number of different roles and also developed his own business Seaside First Aid Training.

Mrs Bryant said her husband loved the ocean but also enjoyed getting out into the bush.

He went camping and on multi day hikes with his family and friends.

Mr Bryant also enjoyed adventure motorbike rides, where he would often stop in the middle of nowhere to take in the scenery and the quiet environment.

Jason Bryant

The family invites all those who knew Jason to attend his Celebration of Life, to be held on Sunday 23rd January 2022 from 2 – 6pm at Tacking Point Surf Club, Port Macquarie, NSW.

The bar will be open and if you would like to bring a share plate that would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

The Bryant Family

BRAVERY MEDAL

Senior Constable Jason William BRYANT,
Port Macquarie Police Station, Hay Street, Port Macquarie NSW 2444.

On the afternoon of 24 May 1999, Senior Constable Bryant assisted in the rescue of six people who were stranded after their vessel had overturned in rough seas on the Port Macquarie bar.

Senior Constable Bryant, on hearing that a local rescue vessel had overturned on a sand bar, made the decision to launch another rescue vessel despite dangerous sea conditions.

Once the vessel was launched, Senior Constable Bryant, who was piloting the vessel and accompanied by another police officer, ( Senior Constable Anthony Francis LONG, NSWPF # 21197.  See page 22 in below link ) proceeded out of the river entrance to the bar.

The surf was at a height that prevented him seeing the stranded people. Through contact with Marine Radio Base, he was directed to the disabled vessel, some 300 metres to the north.

En-route, the other officer was injured as the surf and swell pounded him against the interior of the vessel.

Senior Constable Bryant saw the stricken vessel with two people aboard.

On reaching them, Constable Bryant was informed that there were four people in greater danger as they had been swept away in the water.

Senior Constable Bryant and the other officer located these four people and pulled them aboard, one at a time.

On returning to the stricken vessel, the boat had capsized again and the people were clinging to the sides of the overturned vessel.

Senior Constable Bryant could not take the men aboard as it was beyond the capacity of the vessel, but reassured them that he would return.

Returning to the river entrance, another vessel took aboard the four men and Senior Constable Bryant’s injured colleague.

Senior Constable Bryant immediately returned to the overturned vessel, but the men had been swept away.

Senior Constable Bryant spotted the men some 30 metres away.
On reaching the men, and as he attempted to rescue one of them, he had to turn the vessel quickly to avoid an oncoming wave. On the next attempt, he pulled the man to safety and then rescued the other man.

By his actions, Senior Constable Bryant displayed considerable bravery.

Rescue boat found 1400kms away

“THE Sea Rescue’s rubber duckie was washed up on North Beach but the fate of Rescue One, worth around $120,000, with all equipment, was still unknown late yesterday.”

That was how the Port Macquarie News reported the May 1999 sea drama that claimed Port Macquarie Sea Rescue’s boat, Rescue One.

On Monday though, 20 months after the boat sank and disappeared, the fate of the six-metre twin hulled Kevlar Cat was finally revealed: on a Queensland beach, some 1400 kms north of where it went down.

The lead-up to the boat’s sinking was one of the most dramatic events ever witnessed on the Hastings, and culminated in bravery awards for eight members of Port Macquarie Sea Rescue and two Port Macquarie policemen.

The drama began on the afternoon of May 24, 1999, when five Sea Rescue members headed across the Hastings River bar in Rescue One in an effort to ferry supplies to two stranded yachts.

Rescue One however lost power in the high seas and overturned, throwing the crew into the water.

Two other Sea Rescue members went to their aid in the group’s rubber duckie but this too was swamped, leaving it up to Senior Constables Tony Long and Jason Bryant who commandeered another rubber duckie and eventually rescued all the crew in a dramatic hour witnessed by hundreds along the shore.

Port Macquarie Sea Rescue’s rubber duckie was eventually washed up but Rescue One was last seen on May 26 1999, 18 miles off the coast south of Forster. Sea Rescue members presumed the boat had eventually been hit and sunk by a ship.

That is until Monday when Bryan Stewart of Oxley Insurance Brokers in Port Macquarie took a call from a Mackay resident who said the hull of a boat – identified as Rescue One by the writing still visible on the side – had been brought in to a Mackay beach by a Queensland survey boat.

The survey boat had been travelling north when the crew noticed the hull of a boat floating out to sea about 110 km south-east of Mackay.

They winched it aboard.

On arriving at their destination near Mackay, they obtained permission to dump it on a harbour wall where it was noticed by a pensioner, keen to salvage what was left.

He then contacted another Mackay resident, who on closer inspection noticed the partial names of “Oxley Insurance Brokers” and “Port Rescue”, the only writing still visible under layers of barnacles.

Using investigative skills that would make any detective proud, the resident rang Telstra to see if there was a listing for an Oxley Insurance Brokers in Port Macquarie and soon found himself talking to Mr Stewart.

“I was just nonplussed when he rang and thought ‘is he for real?’,” said Mr Stewart, who is still amazed the boat has turned up so far away from where it sank.

Mr Stewart is now waiting to hear from the insurance company, which is the boat’s legal owner after paying out on it more than 18 months ago, to see if the pensioner can salvage it.

There is nothing left of the boat above the hull but amazingly the engines are still attached, although the boat itself “smells pretty bad”.

For Port Macquarie Sea Rescue, the boat’s discovery is wonderful news.

“We’re so pleased about it because we had that boat for 13 years and were very attached to it,” said president Ron Isaacs.

“For the people of Port Macquarie it was a lifesaving vessel and to see it maybe rejuvenated makes us very happy.”

Police service top honour

The award, which is for acts of unselfish heroism, is presented to only one serving policeman a year. It was Sen. Const. Bryant’s role in last year’s dramatic Hastings River rescue that gained him the honour, the latest of many he has received.

In fading light and huge seas, Sen. Const Bryant, along with Sen. Const Tony Long, utilised an inshore rescue boat to continually enter the most hazardous section of the bar and rescue members of the Port Macquarie Sea Rescue group who had been thrown from their boat.

He received his citation during the Northern Region and Port Macquarie Local Area Command Medals and Awards Ceremony held at Port Macquarie Police Station.

The Peter Stuckey Mitchell Medal, one of the state’s most prestigious citations and given to only one serving member of the NSW Police Service each year was presented to Sen. Con Bryant by Northern Region Commander Assistant Commissioner Peter Walsh.

Sen. Const. Bryant said he was most honoured to receive the award.

Efforts beyond the call of duty are recognised

But to work colleagues and the general community the awards signify just praise for deeds which go far beyond those of the normal course of a job.

More than 100 serving and former NSW Police officers, police administration staff, members of the community and family and friends were at the Port Macquarie Police Station for the awards.

It was the last official award ceremony for Port Macquarie Local Area Commander Superintendent Jim Cranna, who is retiring in January.

Car vandals’ busy Sunday morning in the south

A series of about 20 automobile offences in Canberra’s south which were committed early on Sunday morning have prompted the Australian Federal Police to warn motorists to hide or remove any removable fixtures from their cars to discourage thieves.

In Waramanga early Sunday morning, 14 automobiles had windows smashed, and two had property stolen from inside.

During the same period, six vehicles had petrol syphoned from them in Wanniassa, and two cars were stolen from Oxley and later recovered in Isabella Plains. Both cars had been stripped and vandalised.

Acting Inspector Terry Paff said that the offenders were probably in their late teens, and were stealing items for their own use.

He said there had been 1063 car-related crimes in Canberra between July 1986 and February this year, and that the increase in car crime was a result of a shift in crime trends away from burglaries as a result of Neighbourhood Watch.

He said that a special effort in the form of extra manpower was being made by police in an attempt to discourage thefts, but that it was ultimately up to car owners to secure their vehicles.

People with confidential information regarding automobile offences were asked to contact police on 497444.

One dead, one saved in fire

By JULIEANNE BASHAM

A woman died and a man was rescued by two policemen in a house fire in Melba yesterday.

The two policemen are to be recommended for a commendation.

Constable Terry Paff and Constable Neil Palmer, on the 10pm to 6am shift, were on patrol when, just after 5am, they noticed smoke billowing up from a high-density housing area in Melba.

” Terry notified Operations [ that ] we could see smoke and we headed in that direction “, Constable Palmer said yesterday. ” As we neared the area we could see clouds of black smoke issuing into the air.

” We arrived at the house in Boult Place and saw that the lounge-room area was gutted and we could hear the roof starting to collapse as we pulled up “.

They went to the front right-hand side of the house and smashed a window to get in. They went into what was the main bedroom of the house, which by then was full of thick, black smoke, forcing them to turn back.

While Constable Paff went to the front door and kicked it in, Constable Palmer went to the rear of the house, pulled up a barbecue skew and smashed a window which led to the back bedroom.

The main force of the fire was contained in the lounge room of the house. Constables Palmer and Paff heard the roof begin to collapse when they arrived. The body of the woman was later found in a corner of the room.

” I jumped up on the window sill and through the smoke saw what appeared to be a form lying on the bed “, Constable Palmer said.

He yelled at the person that the house was on fire, and to ” get out ” but the person ” did not answer or move “.

” I picked up an object from a bench and threw it at the person and again yelled to get out.

” At this stage he said, ‘ What the hell is going on ‘ … as the man came towards me I pulled him through the window.

” As I was helping him through the window I heard the fire brigade start up “.

The man, Mr John Mordaunt, of Hackett, in his early 40s, had told him that there was a woman in the house.

” I went to the front of the house and saw that Terry was all right, but as we could not get into the main lounge room we had to give up our search for anyone else in the house “, he said.

” We think that the chap was only saved because the door to his bedroom had been closed and a vacuum had been created in the loungeroom. During the entire time we heard the sounds of the roof collapsing.

” The woman was later found in a corner of the loungeroom “.

Police will not issue the name of the woman, identified as Mr Mordaunt’s de-facto wife, until all relatives had been informed.

Constable Palmer had been taken to the Royal Canberra Hospital with a sprained ankle but was later allowed home. Constable Paff and Mr Mordaunt were not injured.

Chief Inspector Max Bradley, Officer in Charge of Belconnen police station, praised the action of his two officers. They had demonstrated outstanding dedication to duty, spotting the fire and responding to it.

” But for their courage in entering the blazing town house there could well have been another life lost “, he said.

” I will be recommending to the commissioner that they receive some appropriate commendation in recognition of their action “.

Belconnen detectives are carrying out an investigation into the fire, the cause of which is not yet known. Police said there were no suspicious

circumstances.

Firemen from the Charnwood and Belconnen brigades extinguished the fire in 15 minutes.

Two dogs also perished.
