OBITUARY

WALLACE JONATHAN NASH.

The death occurred at Stratford after many months of ill-health of ex-Constable First-Class Wallace Jonathan Nash. After spending two months in hospital in Sydney he was subsequently discharged from the Police Force and last June came with his wife and son to live with his mother-in-law, Mrs. John Wand, at Stratford.

His health deteriorated over the months and his death at the home of Mrs. Wand was not altogether unexpected.

The late Mr. Nash was well-known and respected in the Gloucester district where he was born and reared. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Nash, he was born 46 years ago at Gloucester River and spent his boyhood and youth at Gloucester River and Bowman.

He joined the N.S.W. Police Force as a young man and up to the time of his discharge had had 20 years and nine months service. He was stationed during that time around the city and was for many years at No. 4 Station in the city. He was last stationed at Chatswood.

In 1928 in Sydney he married Miss Emma Wand, a daughter of the late Mr. John Wand and Mrs. Wand, of Stratford.

He is survived by his wife and one son John. Surviving brothers and sisters are: Charles, Ernest, Sidney, Bert., Mrs. B. Bridge (Upper Lansdowne), Mrs. P. Bridge ( Mount .George), Mrs. C. Boorer. (Mount George) and Mrs. F. Hancock ( Mitchell’s Island). One brother, George, predeceased him 17 years ago.

To the family and relatives we extend our sincere sympathy.

From NSW Fallen Police FB Group – 20 December 2016

Sergeant Stuart Foster – 10th May 1939 – OIC Murrurundi Police Station

I stumbled across this Sergeant who was 46 years of age at the time of his death. The Sergeant was admitted to Newcastle Hospital for an unknown operation. Complications arising from that operation led to the death of the Sergeant.

It appears Sergeant Foster was attached to the following stations;
Burraga
Oberon
Terry Hie Hie
Pallamallawa
Webonga
Burren Junction
Narrabri
Murrurundi

According to papers he had served 25 years in the Police and was the youngest serving Sergeant at the time in the NSW Police Force.

Sergeant Foster grew up in the Upper Allyn region at the foothills of the Barrington Tops with family spanning across the ridge to the Salisbury and Underbank areas.

The funeral was held at the Church of England in Dungog followed by his internment at the Melbury Cemetery.

Does not appear to be a KoD nor does his name appear on the Honor Roll.

The Cemetery is on private land near Salisbury NSW 2420.

OBITUARY

FUNERAL OF WELL-KNOWN POLICE SERGEANT. LATE SERGEANT S. FOSTER.

The funeral of the late Sergeant Stuart Foster, officer-in-charge of Murrurundi Police Station, following an operation a few days previously in Newcastle Hospital, left Meighan’s Funeral Parlours, Newcastle, on Friday, 12th May, for the long drive to Dungog, and then to Melbury Church of England, where an impressive service was conducted by the Rev. D. T. Rees, of Newcastle.

The casket, on leaving the parlours, was draped with the Union Jack, the pall-bearers being six uniformed members of the police, who, with a police escort of 16, accompanied the hearse to the Bank Corner, Newcastle.

Another police escort, drawn from Kurri Kurri. Dungog, Weston, Cessnock, Paterson, Abermain and West Maitland police district, joined the cortege at Dungog, and included the police pall-bearers. Sergeant Pender and Superintendent White.

The casket, still draped with the Union Jack, passed through the double rank of police comrades to its resting place in the Church of England portion of Melbury cemetery, where the interment was made.

The deceased, who was only 46 years of age, was,the second son of a well-known family at; Vacy, and the grandson of two greatly respected pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. William Edwards-Snr., of Melbury, on whose property, on the Upper Allyn River, he was born. He married his cousin, Miss Evelyn Edwards, and a year later joined the New South Wales Police Force. His first appointment was to Burraga, in the Western district, thence to Oberon, and later to Terry Hie Hie, Pallamallawa, Wemonga, Burren Junction, Narrabri, and then four years ago to Murrurundi.

The chief mourners are the widow and daughter (Marjorie and Dorothy), parents (Mr. and Mrs. W. Foster), sister Norrie (Mrs. F. Leake), his wife’s parents (Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Edwards Senr.). brothers and, sisters-in-law (Mr. W. J. Edwards, Mrs. Claude Edwards, Mr. F. Leake and Mr. Mervyn Edwards) and many others.

A POLICEMAN LAID TO REST

SIXTEEN POLICE and a large party of citizens from Maitland, Gresford. Dungog, and the districts near by stood in silence in the tiny rural cemetery at Melbury while Sergeant Stuart Foster, officer in charge of Murrurundi Police Station for the last four years, was buried yesterday morning.

After years of service in the larger towns of the State, with all the strains and worry that police work involves, Sergeant Foster was taken back to the quiet bush settlement of his youth. He was born in the Allyn River district, near Gresford.

The funeral was unusual in several ways. At 7.15 yesterday morning the casket was carried from parlours in King street. Newcastle, to a hearse, and accompanied by six police pall-hearers and a police escort of 16 as far as Bank Corner, Newcastle West. From there began a 42-mtile drive to Dungog. For the 42 miles the hearse was accompanied only by a police car, containing the North-eastern District Superintendent (Mr. J. W. White) and Sergeant Pender, and another private car.

At Dungog, however, it was met by another police party of 10 drawn from Dungog, Cessnock, Abermain, Weston, Paterson, and West Maitland, and a long cortege of other cars carrying friends and relatives. From Dungog the funeral drove another 20 miles to the church at Melbury.

The service over, the cortege moved on towards the cemetery. Two hundred yards from the cemetery the cars stopped beside a river. The casket had to be lifted from the hearse and transported across by motor-lorry, while the mourners followed over a narrow log crossing, with wires stretching across waist high on either side as handrails.

The remains were carried to the graveside between the two ranks of the police escort : the first, and possibly the last, that the tiny Melbury cemetery will ever see. Sergeant Foster, who was 46, died in Newcastle Hospital on Wednesday. He is survived r Mrs. Foster (formerly Miss Edmunds, of Melbury) and two daughters.,

Scone Advocate (NSW : 1887 – 1954), Friday 12 May 1939, page 1

PERSONAL

A shadow of sorrow spread over Murrurundi and district on Wednesday last when word came to hand of the passing, suddenly, following an operation in the Newcastle District Hospital, of Police Sergeant Stuart Foster, who had been stationed in the town for the past three years, during which time, largely owing to his efficiency, courtesy, and always complacent manner, he made a large circle of friends, all of whom were shocked at the sorrowful occurrence, in which Mrs. Foster and daughters (Misses Marjorie and Dorothy) have much heartfelt sympathy. The late Sergt. Foster was an officer who went about his duties quietly, yet thoroughly, tempered justice with mercy, and if he erred at all, it was in the direction of leniency. And so he won the respect and goodwill of men in every walk of life, with whom he immensely popularised himself. The funeral took place this morning, the cortege moving from the Mulbring Church of England in the Dungog district.

Truth (Sydney, NSW : 1894 – 1954), Sunday 18 March 1934, page 12

MRS. RICHARDS ILL AT LONG BAY GAOL

Complete Collapse After Ordeal Of Nott Murder Inquiry

MRS. ANNIE ELIZABETH RICHARDS, central figure in the Pilliga murder horror, is seriously ill in bed at the Long Bay Reformatory Hospital. AFTER her nerve-wrecking ordeal at Burren Junction little more than a week ago when she was committed for trial on a charge of having sent George Washington Nott, Pilliga stock and station agent, to his doom, Mrs. Richards was taken to Long Bay Gaol. There, she has received constant medical attention.

HAVING collapsed near the conclusion of the police court proceedings at Burren Junction, the unhappy woman appeared to be much calmer after her committal. Indeed, when Mrs. Richards left by train for Sydney she seemed more content and a smile momentarily transformed her worried face as her husband, Henry Carl Richards, kissed her tenderly a minute before the express departed from Burren Junction. He is also charged with being an accessory. She seemingly retained her good spirits on the long and tiresome trip and chatted on topical subjects with her escort, Detective-Sergeant Alford and Policewoman Mrs. Mooney. She did not sleep. Instead she talked and several times perused newspaper accounts of her statement, a remarkable human document that has gripped and amazed an entire continent.

SADDENED FROM ALL ACCOUNTS THIS SADDENED WOMAN HAD NO QUALMS CONCERNING HER SOJOURN AT LONG BAY, UNTIL THE TIME ARRIVED FOR HER REMOVAL TO NARRABRI, WHERE, IT IS STATED, SHE AND HER HUSBAND WILL FACE A JUDGE AND JURY ON APRIL 4 NEXT, THE DATE OF THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE CRIMINAL COURT SITTINGS IN THE NORTH-WEST.

Being on remand Mrs. Richards is not expected to do labor of any description. She is called upon to make her bed but that is all. She intended to ask permission of the prison authorities to allow her to knit some small tokens of appreciation for Policewoman Mooney and Mrs. Foster, wife of Sergeant Stuart Foster, who is in charge of the Burren Junction Police Station.

THOSE WOMEN DISPLAYED UNENDING KINDNESS TO MRS. RICHARDS DURING HER HOURS OF AGONY AT BURREN JUNCTION.

NOT TO BE

But it was not to be. Once at the reformatory, Mrs. Richards collapsed and had to be put to bed. She has been constantly watched and the best medical attention possible has been secured for her. The gaol authorities have studied her every need, and have taken particular care of her diet, which has consisted mainly of thin bread and butter owing to her physical condition.

And what of her husband, the pleasant-faced drover, the story of whose unshaken love for his wife was told in ‘Truth’ last week. ? He expected to come to Sydney during the week with his solicitor, Mr. K. J. O’Halloran. of Tamworth, to complete arrangements for the defence. HOWEVER, THERE WAS A HITCH IN THE ARRANGEMENTS AND RICHARDS RETURNED TO HIS HUT AT BUGILBONE. BUT, ‘TRUTH’ LEARNS. HE WILL MAKE THE TRIP TO THE CITY TO-MORROW. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS HE WILL DO WILL BE TO SECURE PERMISSION TO VISIT HIS WIFE AT LONG BAY.

Police Court,

(Before Messrs P. P. Rosenthal and C. G. Hobbes, J’s.P.)   TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25.

Frank Brown (25) was charged with that on February 22, at Terry-Hie-Hie, he did unlawfully assault Albert Duncan. Mr. T. R. Hogan appeared for the complainant, and Mr. A. B. F. Zlotkowski for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty.

Constable Stuart Foster, stationed at Terry-Hie-Hie, deposed: I know the defendant and complainant in this case. In consequence of a complaint made to m« by the complainant, I arrested the defendant at 11 p.m. on the 22nd instant. Both defendant and complainant were present at the time of the arrest. I said to complainant, ” Is this the man who assaulted you ?” He said ‘Yes.’ I said to Brown, ‘Did you assault Duncan?’ He said, ‘I had to defend myself.’

By Mr. Zlotkowski: Hei may have said, ‘What I did I did to defend myself’. He did not say he went over to the camp because, they were fighting over there. He did not say Picket was choking another black and he (Brown) tried to pull him off. He did not say he was hit over the head with a stone while he was pulling the other man off, but he did say he was hit with a stone. He showed me a place on the left temple under the hair. He did not say who hit him with the stone.

Albert Duncan, laborer, residing at Terry-Hie-Hie, deposed: On Saturday night last at about 9 o’clock I was at my own place. My wife was present, also Harry Nean and Mrs. Newman (a midwife). I know defendant. He came from the direction of the mill to my place. We were inside the house when he came. Two men, Gillen and Picket, were fighting near my verandah. Brown came round the corner and said something. I then came out of the house and asked them to get away — to got off the premises. He punched me on the forehead when I said that. I walked back to my room and he said he would kill me. He had a paling which he tore from the fence. He hit me on the top of the head with the paling. Picket took the paling. I then went to my wife’s assistance, who had fainted. I did not assault the defendant in any way.

To the Bench: I heard the men fighting outside. They were fighting a couple of minutes. Picket lives at my place. Gillen does not live there. Picket is my step-father. I have no mark on my head where I was hit. By Mr. Zlotkowski: He did not give me a black eye. The men were fighting for two minutes, but not five minutes. Picket and Gillen are both blackfellows. I was never in any fight before. I have had a bad fall off a horse. The hit defendant gave me was not as bad as that. He did not do me any harm. I am as good a man as ever. Harry Nean, laborer, residing at Terry-Hie-Hie, deposed: I know Brown and Duncan. I was at Duncan’s place about 9 o’clock on Saturday night last. I saw Brown come through the gate. He used some bad language when coming through the gate. Duncan came out of the house and said, ‘Don’t kick up a row here, my wife is not well.’ Brown then struck Duncan somewhere about the face. He hit him with his fist. Duncan then went towards the porch of his home and Brown followed him. He pulled a paling out of the garden and said he would knock his ….. brains out. He hit him with the paling, but struck him with no force. Picket took the paling out of Brown’s hand. Duncan went to his wife.

By Mr. Zlotkowski: There was no trouble when Brown came. Gillen was walking away when Brown came. Duncan was not there when Gillen and Picket were fighting. If he said he saw Gillen and Picket down he was not telling the truth. Picket was down and Gillen was on top of him. Duncan did not come till Brown came. No one hit Brown with a stone. I did not hit Brown. He came to me for protection. He fell against a post where Picket threw him. This was at the finish of the row. Picket was fighting with Brown after Duncan went away. The fight between Duncan and Brown was only a hit. It was a wild fight between Gillen and Picket. Gillen is about 22 years of age, and Picket about 50. I was up once for fighting. I was not referee. By Mr. Hogan : I was up about 18 or 19 years ago for fighting. To the Bench: Brown had liquor on him. Frank Brown, laborer, residing at Terry-Hie-Hie, deposed: I remember the night of the 22nd instant. I went to Duncan’s place to get my horse— Gillen had it. I saw Gillen had Picket down choking him. I pulled Gillen off. I got hit on the head with a stone. Picket threw it. ‘ I did not do anything to Duncan. The stone knocked me down. I did not pick up a paling and I never hit Duncan, nor tried to do so. Duncan was there when the fight was over. I was about ten yards from the verandah. I used no bad language, I work for Mr. Cory. I was only going to get my horse.

By Mr. Hogan: I am not a quarrelsome man. I was convicted for fighting about two years ago. I was fined for being drunk and disorderly three years ago. I was fined £3 for using language, and £1 for resisting the police. I drink. I had one drink on Saturday night. It was beer. Sometimes I use bad language I did not use bad language last Saturday night. I did not hit Duncan, and I did not pull a paling out of the garden to hit Duncan. I did not take a paling at all. Duncan did not hit me, only Picket. I heard women screaming outside, the house. None of the ladies fainted that I know of. I did not get the mark on forehead by falling against a post. By Mr. Zlotkowski: The three convictions mentioned took place at the same time — two years ago.

By the Bench : I saw Picket throw the stone. He was about 5 or 6 yards away. Cecil Cory, drover, Terry-Hie-Hie, deposed : I know the defendant Brown. I have known him since he was 12 years of age. He is a quiet and inoffensive fellow and a good worker. He is not a loafer. By Mr. Hogan: He does not look for fight. He does not drink to any extent. One beer would not upset him. I never knew him to drink rum. He does not swear.

The defendant was convicted and fined £1, with £2 witness’s expenses, and £2 professional costs, in default one month’s imprisonment, with hard labor.

The death of this retired policeman only came to our attention on 16 December 2016 because his National Medal and 1st Clasp to the National Medal appeared for sale at http://sherwoodauctions.com.au/?page=image&image=10.jpg&view=246.

Enquiries with TasPol were not very ‘fruitful’ because they were “too busy” at the time of my phone call.  The TasPol Police Association did not have anything to offer on their website about the gentleman.

The Auction house was more forthcoming with information ( by way of the attached photos ) and Google found further information about the Sergeant.

Parkside Funerals in Tasmania were also forthcoming with information and verified that this gentleman was, in fact, a policeman.

The story behind the selling of his National Medal has sourced.  Tony Porter was never married and had no children or relatives to hand his Medal to.   It was sent to Auction by ‘friends’.  A member of NSW Fallen Police FB Group secured the National Medal, in the Auction in December 2016, for $100.

Esther Mckay A wonderful man who contributed to the development of scientific equipment and procedures. He contacted me late in life and we had many telephone conversations about the history of the scientific section. I have a document he wrote relating to the development of the section which is a much loved and admired record of his time in the force. My only regret is that I did not take the time to visit him. RIP Jack.

Outback shooting link to sisters

February 1, 2006 – 9:01PM

A convicted rapist shot dead by a police officer in Western Australia was wanted by Victorian detectives over the stabbing murders of two sisters in Melbourne.

Melbourne man William John Watkins, 38, was fatally shot in the chest yesterday after he bashed acting Sergeant Shane Gray on a highway south of Karratha, in WA’s remote Pilbara.

Watkins was pulled over by Sgt Gray on suspicion of stealing petrol, but it emerged today he had a history of convictions for rape and assaulting police.

He was also wanted by Victorian police for questioning over the murders of Colleen Irwin, 23, and her sister Laura, 21, who were neighbours of Watkins in the Melbourne suburb of Altona North.

The sisters were found dead from stab wounds in their home in Millers Road on Saturday evening. They may have been dead since the previous day.

Watkins lived in a block of flats in the same street.

“He (Watkins) is a person of interest in Victoria for a double homicide that happened there last Friday,” WA police Superintendent Fred Zagami, of Karratha police, said today.

However, when he pulled over Watkins yesterday, Sgt Gray did not know the Melbourne man was wanted for questioning over the murders because Victorian police did not issue an alert until this morning, said Supt Zagami.

Watkins was shot when stopped for allegedly speeding away from the Fortescue Roadhouse, south of Karratha, without paying for petrol for his Victorian-registered white Toyota station wagon.

He was killed during an altercation with Sgt Gray, who suffered a broken nose and suspected head fractures.

“We can tell you that at least two shots were fired and at least one of the projectiles struck the person who is deceased in the upper chest area and we are not too sure about the second shot,” said Supt Zagami.

“I have personally spoken to the deceased’s sister and his father in the eastern states and explained to them how the incident has unfolded here.”
Sgt Gray, an experienced officer who trained others in the use of force, was traumatised by the shooting, he said.

“The last thing a police officer wants is to shoot somebody and death results … it’s a split second decision between saving their life or the life of a member of the public.”

Sgt Gray was flown to Perth overnight for treatment but today was still too ill to be questioned.

Both WA and Victorian police called for public help to piece together Watkins’ journey after he left Melbourne.

Police said officers who searched Watkins’ car yesterday found little or no luggage, suggesting he may have fled Victoria in haste.

“The vehicle may have travelled from the WA/SA border at speed over the last few days,” said Supt Zagami.

“With his dark cap and red shirt and dark glasses and tattoos on his arms he should stand out.”

Meanwhile, the parents of Colleen and Laura Irwin said news of Watkins’ death did nothing to ease their grief.

“The Victorian police are still investigating circumstances of Colleen and Laura’s death and will continue to do so,” a family spokesman said in a statement.

“This news does nothing for the grief in Shirley and Allan’s hearts.

“Shirley and Allan would like to thank the Victorian and West Australian police and all involved for the wonderful work they have done to find Colleen and Laura’s killer.”

Watkins’ neighbours said he had lived there for about a year and kept to himself.

Peter Schroder said he passed him in the stairwell occasionally and he was no trouble.

“You would just say `G’day’ and that’s about it,” he said.

Police investigate link between double murder and fatal shooting

PM – Wednesday, 1 February , 2006  18:32:00

Reporter: Nick McKenzie

MARK COLVIN: The family of two sisters murdered in Melbourne says its grief has only been compounded by reports that a man shot dead by police in Western Australia may have been responsible for the brutal double murder.

Victorian detectives are continuing to investigate whether 38-year-old William John Watkins stabbed to death Colleen and Laura Irwin, whose bodies were found in their Melbourne home over the weekend.

Watkins, who is believed to have had a violent criminal history, was shot dead yesterday after an altercation with a policeman in the Pilbara.

Nick McKenzie reports.

NICK MCKENZIE: Over the last few days, relatives of Victorian sisters Colleen and Laura Irwin have begged for the any information that could help them and police understand why the women were murdered.

It now seems likely that some of those answers may lie with a man shot dead yesterday by a police officer in the Pilbara in Western Australia, thousands of kilometres away from the Melbourne home where the girls’ bodies were discovered.

The police officer had pulled over 38-year-old William John Watkins after he’d left a petrol station without paying for his fuel.

An altercation followed, during which Watkins, who had a long criminal history for offences including rape, was shot dead.

It’s believed Watkins may have been driving for days after he’d fled his own residence in the same Melbourne street where the Irwin sisters lived.

This afternoon, West Australian Superintendent Fred Zagami spoke to journalists.

FRED ZAGAMI: We are assisting the Victorian police to… with information being relayed back from here. We are very keen to locate the movements of this person and his vehicle since he arrived in the state.

We believe that he did come in through South Australia somewhere and so we’re very keen to hear from the public of any person that’s seen this particular person or his vehicle in Western Australia.

NICK MCKENZIE: Victorian homicide detectives are continuing to investigate if Watkins is responsible for killing the Irwin sisters, who were both in their early 20s.

A friend of one of the sisters has reportedly said she was concerned she was being stalked, a possibility ruled out by the woman’s father, Allen Irwin, who has said he would have been aware of any such fears.

Today the girls’ uncle, Hugh McGowan, spoke to the media on behalf of the murdered girls’ parents shortly after they’d learned that the man killed in Western Australia was wanted by Victorian police for questioning.

HUGH MCGOWAN: The news that we’ve just had does nothing for the grief in Shirley and Allen’s hearts. Shirley and Allen would like to thank the Victorian police and the West Australian police and all others involved for the wonderful work they are doing to find Colleen and Laura’s killer.

NICK MCKENZIE: Police in Western Australia continue to investigate the incident in which William John Watkins was shot.

It’s believed Watkins may have attacked Acting Sergeant Shane Grey with a wheel brace after the police officer had pulled him over.

Acting Sergeant Grey is recovering in hospital with serious injuries, including possible fractures to his skull and severe facial bruising.

West Australian Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan says Acting Sergeant Grey was unaware that Watkins was wanted for questioning over the murder of the Irwin sisters in Melbourne.

KARL O’CALLAGHAN: Sergeant Grey was not aware of any alerts. He was responding to a vehicle drive-off on the North West Coastal Highway. That’s all he knew and he intercepted the vehicle to speak to the driver.

MARK COLVIN: West Australian Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan ending Nick McKenzie’s report.

Vic Police under fire over suspect alert

The World Today – Thursday, 2 February , 2006  12:40:00

Reporter: Lynn Bell

KAREN PERCY: Police in Victoria are under fire this afternoon for not putting out an all-states alert for a murder suspect who was ultimately shot and killed by a Western Australian police officer on Tuesday.

38-year-old William John Watkins was a suspect in the double murder of two sisters in Melbourne, but only police officers in Victoria had been asked to look out for the man.

Victoria’s Police Assistant Commissioner, Simon Overland, has been defending his force, saying it would not have been appropriate to put out an all-states alert based on the evidence available at the time.

Lynn Bell reports.

LYNN BELL: 38 -year-old William John Watkins has, in the past, been convicted of rape and assault. And from the early stages, he was a person of interest to police investigating the murders of Laura and Colleen Irwin, who were raped and stabbed to death on Friday night.

He lived next door to the sisters, who were 21 and 23, and this morning the Assistant Commissioner for Crime with Victoria Police, Simon Overland, told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell, that DNA tests have now been done on blood samples.

SIMON OVERLAND: It was DNA testing of blood samples or blood that had been found.

NEIL MITCHELL: What, of his blood, or victims’ blood?

SIMON OVERLAND: Well, it’s victim blood.

NEIL MITCHELL: So victims’ blood was found in his house?

SIMON OVERLAND: Yes. Well, that will be the allegation, yes. I mean, I make the point that all of this will need to be subject to inquiry here in Victoria, but that’s what will be alleged.

LYNN BELL: A bulletin went out to all police in Victoria at half-past-one on Tuesday, telling officers to detain Watkins if they saw him, and call the homicide detectives. But Victorian police did not notify officers interstate about the investigations.

William John Watkins was shot dead by a police officer in Western Australia on Tuesday morning, after he drove away from a petrol station without paying for fuel.

It’s alleged Watkins hit the officer with a wheel brace when he was pulled over, and Acting Sergeant Shane Gray fired two shots.

Victoria Police’s Assistant Commissioner, Simon Overland, believes detectives in Victoria have handled the case properly.

And he says there was no reason to notify interstate officers earlier in the week.

SIMON OVERLAND: We didn’t have sufficient justification to arrest that individual, we didn’t have sufficient justification to put out a wider message across the rest of Australia, because there was no proper basis for doing so.

It wasn’t until yesterday afternoon, when we got the forensic test back, that he went from being a person of interest to a firm suspect, and we were then in the process of disseminating that information across the rest of Australia when we were then able to make the connection with the events in Western Australia.

LYNN BELL: But Simon Overland says that deciding when to disseminate information is a matter of professional judgement that is open to interpretation.

SIMON OVERLAND: Did we get it right in this case? We’ll never know. I mean, had we actually put that information out into the public domain, and that shooting then happened in WA, you would quite rightly be asking us questions of did we go too early?

It’s difficult in certain circumstances such as this to know did we do… you know, was the right decision made? All I can say to you is that I’m satisfied with the way this matter has been handled.

LYNN BELL: Western Australia’s Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan says he believes communication between Victoria and the States was appropriate.

KARL O’CALLAGHAN: Victoria Police, to my knowledge, didn’t become aware this person was travelling until Monday in any event. So by the time those alerts come out it takes some time to do that. So I don’t think there’s any miscommunication, I just think it’s the turn of events.

LYNN BELL: West Australian Superintendent Fred Zagami says timely alerts for police officers, nationwide, are vital.

FRED ZAGAMI: We’d expect around Australia that police, if a person is on the run for a murder, that we put out timely information to protect the community and also the police (inaudible) they have a traffic stop.

LYNN BELL: In Western Australia, Sergeant Gray is recovering from the head injuries he suffered on Tuesday.

KAREN PERCY: That report from Lynn Bell.

MURDER OF MRS. McGLINN

N. P. Lawrence Committed INQUEST CONCLUDED

Perth, July 20.— The inquest into the death of Ellen Margaret Christina McGlinn (53), widow, of Lindsay street, Perth, was concluded before the coroner, Mr. T. H. Hannah, acting S.M., in the Perth Courthouse to-day. Mrs. McGlinn was found to be dead on arrival at the Perth Hospital on June 26 following an incident on a small reserve at the corner of Bulwer and Brisbane streets. On Monday 13 witnesses were examined and to-day a further ten were examined.

Norman Pugh Lawrence (34), turner, of Aberdeen street, Perth, who was charged with the murder of Mrs. McGlinn, was present in court in custody. He was represented by Mr. John Dunphy.

Detective-Sergeant A. J. Blight examined witnesses.

John Patrick Reynolds, a member of the A.M.F., said he was at the scene of the disturbance on the corner of Bulwer and Brisbane streets about 6.50 p.m. on June 26. He saw Lawrence and told him to wait until the police arrived. He alleged that Lawrence said: ‘I know I have done something wrong and I will take what is coming to me.’

Constable Laurence Henry Tully said he was called to the scene about the same time and saw a woman lying near a shrub on the reserve with her body exposed. She had head injuries. Witness said he felt for her pulse and he came to the conclusion the woman was dead.

Constable Lionel Claude Hull said that he was present at the Perth Hospital when orderlies undressed Lawrence and found a red scarf in his pocket. The scarf had been previously identified by Mrs. McGlinn’s daughter as very similar to the one her mother wore. Detective A. Wedd testified that while Lawrence was being examined in the observation ward at the Perth Hospital he found a piece of grass about 2 in. long in Lawrence’s underclothing. Later he made a search of the locality of the reserve and found a woman’s shoe, size 5, which matched in every detail the shoe removed from Mrs. McGlinn at the Perth Hospital.

Detective-Sergeant A. J. Blight said that Lawrence gave him a detailed statement of his movements on the day of June 26. Lawrence told him that he was a returned soldier from this war and had lost his sight of one eye. Lawrence stated that he did not suffer from shell shock. “I showed Lawrence the red scarf on the day following the death of Mrs. McGlinn,” added witness, ” and Lawrence said it looked like one he had picked up on the previous night.”

At the conclusion of the evidence the coroner found that Ellen Margaret Christina McGlinn came by her death at a reserve on the corner of Bulwer and Brisbane streets on June 26 as the result of head injuries, and shock caused by being hit on the head by a blunt instrument by Norman Pugh Lawrence, who also committed rape on the deceased. The coroner also found that Norman Pugh Lawrence wilfully murdered Mrs. McGlinn and committed him for trial at the next sittings of the Criminal Court at Perth.
