NSW Police , Thought to share this – Remember those Nightshifts and early morning crime scene’s when Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Horn arrived. It was a matter of “who was in charge til I got here”.. A career spanning more than 50 years, there isn’t much this cop hasn’t seen. Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Horn has investigated and solved some of the highest-profile crimes and disasters in Australia, and across the world.

Granville train to war crimes: Hero cop’s 50 years on the front lines
From the Granville train disaster to the long search for Matthew Leveson’s remains, there isn’t much Detective Sergeant Stephen Horn hasn’t done in more than 50 years with NSW Police.
The veteran is hanging up his badge and hopes to spend more time with his family, and he spoke to A Current Affair about his career and the cases that have stayed with him.
“I’ve always tried to give more than 100 percent – as I say to some young people, get down and get dirty,” Det Sgt Horn said.

He joined the force in 1968, and for 44 years of his career he has been on the front line of crime scenes gathering any clue that might unravel a crime.
“Who else is going to speak for (the deceased) if not the police?” he said.
But despite his long career, he admitted the burden could be a heavy one.
Det Sgt Horn joined the force in 1968. (A Current Affair)
“I try not to take the work home and think about it at home, because if I worry about it and freak out and think about it, I’ll end up making mistakes,” he said.
“Multiple murders where a family has been murdered and children were involved – you always think to yourself, ‘why the children?'”
Det Sgt Horn was a fresh-faced, young forensic officer when a train derailed at Granville in Sydney in 1977.
Det Sgt Horn was one of the forensic officers on the scene at the Granville train disaster in 1977. (A Current Affair)
His job was to retrieve the 83 victims who died, and identify them.
“We had a temporary morgue put up in a large tent and when portions of the concrete from the roadway were actually moved off the carriages, we would go down and retrieve the bodies and take them up to the morgue, do an initial examination of them, photograph them, look at their injuries, look at their clothing,” he said.
It was far from the last disaster scene Det Sgt Horn would attend.

He also carried out his duties at the 1981 Sylvania Nursing Home fire (19 dead), the 1989 Kempsey bus crash (35 dead).
And in 1991, he received a phone call that shaped his career.
Det Sgt Horn was called on to investigate war crimes in Ukraine, where he dug up two mass graves and exhumed the remains of dozens of World War II victims – including 20 children.
Assistant Commissioner Peter Cotter with Det Sgt Horn who hopes to spend more time with his wife and granddaughter in retirement. (A Current Affair)
“When we started to exhume these remains, we could actually see they were almost all grouped in an area – little tiny baby remains and things like that,” he said.
“Why did this happen? Why were these children taken from this village when the information was they didn’t know if they were Jews or not? They just decided to take them and dispose of them.”
He spent three months in the trenches, with minimal food and supplies.
Det Sgt Horn has also been called upon to investigate war crimes in Ukraine. (A Current Affair)
Back home, the evolution of DNA technology has allowed Det Sgt Horne to solve cases that were otherwise impossible to crack.
“I think we had about 27 sexual assault cases solved with DNA, with about 33 charges – some of them serial offenders,” he said.
Most recently, Det Sgt Horn’s experience played an integral role in finding Matthew Leveson’s remains, 10 years after he went missing.

It is a gift Matthew’s parents Mark and Faye Leveson could never repay.
“He helped bring our Matty home and without that, we might still be out there looking for him, so a massive thank-you isn’t enough,” Faye Leveson said.
Assistant Commissioner Peter Cotter commended Det Sgt Horn’s service.

“The NSW Police Force is extremely proud of you, we wish you the very best in retirement, and please go and enjoy yourself, and thank you for 50 years,” he said.
And Det Sgt Horn himself had one message for the new generation of young police officers.
“Be professional, diligent, loyal, courteous, and don’t give up,” he said.
There are three other ex-Forensics guys from Sydney who have the same problem.
One appears to have beaten it, but two others’ prognoses are very poor.
I worked with them all over the years.
I’m going to get a kidney health check next week, as are a few other former Forensics work mates.

EXECUTIVE Council of Australian Jewry honorary secretary Josie Lacey has been elected to the new Police Ethnic Communities Advisory Council.
The Council will comprise about 11 members representing various ethnic communities throughout New South Wales.
Ms Lacey, who was elected to represent the Ethnic Communities Council, said she “ would, in effect, represent the Jewish community through her ECC role ”.
The Council, which will convene its first meeting on June 24, will examine such issues as the way policing manners impact on ethnic communities.
“ The Council will look at ways in which police can be more sensitive to ethnic groups in a way which will benefit both parties, ” police media spokesman Alan Small said. “ It is the first time that an advisory body will report directly to the Police Commissioner. ”

Hi Greg, I saw this on Day of the Roses – Granville Disaster FB page and thought you might be interested:
Granville continues…. A couple of years ago (I think) I travelled north to meet a frail 90+ man named Ernest J Kelly.
You see, during research and comradeship with many, his daughter arranged our meeting.
Ernie was the original police forensic photographer on the day who was stationed at Parramatta. He was not only responsible for the pics but was instrumental in building the mock train set for the inquiry, which he received a commendation for.
His daughter who is completing her Paramedic Degree informed me that after an ageing illness, Ernie passed away this week.
On behalf of the Granville Train Disaster Association and myself, we will continue to celebrate his life and thank him for his service.

ROSS is NOT mentioned on the Police Wall of Remembrance * NOT JOB RELATED
FURTHER INFORMATION IS NEEDED ABOUT THIS PERSON, THEIR LIFE, THEIR CAREER AND THEIR DEATH.
March 1980 : Liverpool Police Officer – Constable Ross. McDonald was promoted to the rank of Constable 1/c., while working Court and Prisoner Security Duties at the Liverpool District Court. He was attested as a Probationary Constable in 3/1975 at the Police Academy, Redfern. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Constable in 3/1984.
He also worked at the Campbelltown Community Radio now known as ‘Sounds of Macarthur’ on 100.3FM, as a program on-air broadcaster using the alias media name ‘ Mike McColl ‘.
Although working on-air for many years, in the last number of years his program was heard 1pm to 4pm each Saturday ( either via the radio or via the internet ).
He resigned from the Police after 11 years service.
Then in 8/1992, he re-joined the NSW Police and was stationed at Marrickville on General Duties.
Not sure when he resigned on this occasion due to ill health, but continued his radio career at 100.3FM, until the past few weeks due to ill health.
It is with a heavy heart that I must share the sad news of the passing of our beloved colleague, Mike McColl, from the Saturday afternoon program “The Mike McColl Show.” This morning, Mike left us after battling an illness for several years.
Despite his health challenges, Mike remained dedicated to entertaining his listeners every Saturday. He cherished each and every one of you, and in return, he was adored by many. His passion for his work and his love for all of you were truly remarkable.
During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Mike’s family and loved ones. We understand the pain they must be feeling, and we offer our deepest condolences and support.
Mike, you will be greatly missed. Your presence on the airwaves brought joy and laughter to countless lives. Your legacy will forever be remembered, and your spirit will continue to inspire us.
* Story behind any Nickname: Roscoe – play on Christian name. Mike McCOLL was so that the ‘bosses’ at the time, within the NSWPF, didn’t know it was Ross as we ( Police ) couldn’t have secondary employment back in those days – paid or voluntarily.
When Ross was going for his interview for a radio station, he didn’t know what to call himself – as he couldn’t / didn’t want to use his real name.
He thought that because he would be in front of a Microphone, he would call himself Mike. But he still didn’t have a surname and as he was walking towards his interview, he spotted a truck drive past with the company name of McColl – so he then became Mike McCOLL.
Nothing further, than what is recorded above, is known about this person at the time of publication and further information and photos would be appreciated.

Ten members of the NSW Police Force will be formally recognised by the Governor-General in this year’s Australia Day Awards.
The Australian Police Medal (APM) is awarded by the Governor-General, General Sir Peter John Cosgrove, AK, MC, for distinguished service by a member of an Australian police force.
The awards are announced twice annually, on Australia Day and the Queen’s Birthday in June.
Acting NSW Police Commissioner, Catherine Burn, APM, has congratulated the recipients on their nominations and commitment to policing.
“I am tremendously proud to have ten officers – with over 300 years combined service – recognised for their dedication to the NSW Police Force,” Acting Commissioner Burn said.
“These officers are a credit to the NSW Police Force, their colleagues, family, friends and the community.
“The officers bring a wealth of experience and professionalism to the force and I’m happy to thank them for their service and congratulate them on today’s awards. They are all very deserving of recipients.”
The nine recipients of the APM are:
– Assistant Commissioner Gary Worboys;
– Detective Superintendent Greig Newbery;
– Superintendent Clinton Pheeney;
– Superintendent Karen Webb;
– Inspector Bruce McGregor;
– Inspector Mark Hargreaves;
– Senior Sergeant Leslie Nugent;
– Sergeant John Keough; and,
– Senior Constable Anthony George Bell.
Senior Sergeant Leslie Michael Nugent joined the New South Wales Police Force as a Trainee in 1971 at the NSW Police Academy, Redfern. He was attested as a Probationary Constable in 1971, where he was stationed at No. 6 Division (North Sydney). He was promoted to his current rank in 1996 and posted to his current command in 1997.
Senior Sergeant Nugent was confirmed as a Constable in 1972 whilst performing General Duties at No. 6 Division (North Sydney). He has performed Special Traffic Patrol and Highway Patrol duties at Traffic Branch, No. 13 Division (Canterbury), Gundagai, Quirindi, Goulburn, Murray District; where, in 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Senior Sergeant (Traffic Coordinator). He later served at the Albury Local Area Command as the Crime Coordinator, his current position.
Senior Sergeant Nugent has spent a majority of his policing career undertaking traffic-related duties in rural NSW, but it is his involvement in the local community where he has truly distinguished himself as a police officer during his 43 years of service. He has developed a strong link between police and the youth of these communities, in particular the local Aboriginal community. He is involved in a number of youth-orientated committees, which extends on many occasions to working in his own time by attending various events aimed at the local Albury youth. Senior Sergeant Nugent is held in high esteem by the Aboriginal and the Albury community. He has been recognised for the support he provides to the Community Services Child Protection Adolescent Team.
Senior Sergeant Nugent was awarded the National Police Service Medal in 2012, National Medal in 1988 (2nd clasp to the National Medal in 2007) and the NSW Police Medal in 2003 (including 6th clasp to the NSW Police Medal in 2014). In 2012, he received the Commissioner’s Sesquicentenary Citation.
His distinguished service in policing now sees Senior Sergeant Nugent at the Albury Local Area Command, serving the state of New South Wales.
