POLICE FUNERAL IN NEWCASTLE

LATE SERGEANT W. A. STUBBS

Impressive scenes marked the police funeral this afternoon of Sergeant W. A. Stubbs, who died at his home at Merewether on Tuesday after a long Illness. A large party of police marched before and after the flag-draped coffin through the city to the railway station and the cortege was headed by the military band of the 2/35th Battalion, with drums draped in crape.

Footpaths on both sides of Hunter street along the route of the funeral procession were lined with people.

The Commissioner of Police was represented by the Superintendent of the North-Eastern Area (Mr. J. W. White) and other police officials present were Inspectors W. A. Davis and A. G. McAlpin. A large number of representatives of the Retired Police Association marched in the cortege.

The chief mourners were: The widow, Mrs. T. Brown and Miss F. Stubbs (daughters). Messrs. William, Cecil, and Alfred Stubbs (sons), Messrs. Leslie and Cecil Stubbs (brothers), and Constable S. A large crowd gathered outside Wood Coffill’s funeral parlor chapel, where the service was held by Rev. A. H. Venn, of Merewether, and traffic was suspended temporarily while the cortege passed into Hunter street.

After the military band, marched the funeral escort of 20 constables, six sergeants, a commissioned officer and the police drill instructor (Constable S. ( Stephen ) Pender), who had charge of police marching arrangements at the funeral. After the hearse, marched the remainder of the police to the mourning party.

NEW POLICE SCHEME

NEWCASTLE WEST NOW LOCK-UP DOOM OF THE BEAT

The introduction of police mobile patrols into the Newcastle district in the near future, will spell the doom of the beat system, which has been in existence for many years.

A direct result of the comprehensive reorganisation of the force, which was commenced immediately the new Commissioner of Police (Mr. Mackay) took office, will be the withdrawal of many officers from suburban stations, which will be converted into lock-ups, each attended by a resident constable.

The first step in this direction was taken yesterday when Sergeant Dean, who is at present on extended leave, and Sergeant Stubbs were transferred to Newcastle headquarters, leaving Constable Dawes in charge.

Similar procedure will be followed gradually at many suburban stations.

As the change proceeds Hamilton will become the base for motor cycles and cars, in which policemen and detectives will tour adjoining municipalities.

CRUISING PATROLS

Call boxes will be established throughout the Newcastle district, from which cruising patrols will report at regular intervals to headquarters. By this means it is hoped to reduce such crimes as housebreaking, as one of the many patrols will be in almost constant touch with headquarters and can be despatched to the scene of a robbery immediately information is received. The quicker moving mobile patrols will make the task of the burglar much more hazardous than hitherto.

It is expected that many of the men will be absorbed in the mobile division, and some others will be transferred to Sydney.

The revolutionary changes to be made are not an experiment. A scheme on the same lines has been put into operation in Sydney, and apparently is giving satisfaction.

SERGEANT SAID HE WAS KICKED

WILD SCENE AT POLICE STATION

The story of a wild scene at Hunter street West police station, in the course of which a police sergeant was kicked in the stomach and had his nose broken by a prisoner, was told at Newcastle Police Court this afternoon.

It was also alleged by a constable, who said he was summoned to the station from an adjoining patrol, that the prisoner hurled a tub at his head.

Thomas Cullen (31), laborer, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having assaulted Sergeant Stubbs, and beaten and otherwise ill-treated him, causing him actual bodily harm, on December 16.

Sergeant Stubbs said that after having arrested Cullen for being drunk, he told him that it had been alleged against him that he had assaulted a man after asking him for sixpence.

Continuing, the sergeant said that when they were within 30 yards of the police station at Newcastle West, Cullen punched him on the head and knocked his cap off.

The sergeant said that he then held down his prisoner by the leg and arm, and asked a passer-by to restore his cap to his head.

Later, while they were going up the steps of the passage way, Cullen kicked him in the stomach.

In the charge room he did the same thing again, so the sergeant, threw him to the floor.

After taking Cullen to a cell, said the sergeant, he was fixing up the prisoner with blankets, when Cullen again kicked him in the stomach and punched his nose, making it bleed.

Subsequently the sergeant was taken by the ambulance to a surgery, and the doctor found his nose was broken.

A FORWARD KICK

To Mr. O’Neill (for Cullen), Sergeant Stubbs denied that he had drawn his baton at any stage. The kick was what would be called on the football field a forward kick. He did not know that Cullen had been treated for severe injuries. He had thrown Cullen in the charge room, and he might have been injured while assaulting other men.

Constable Page, of Wickham, said he found the sergeant sitting down dazed, and bleeding from the nose.

DREW HIS BATON

” When I went to the cell, ” he added, ” Cullen said he would bash my head in if I came in, the same as he had done to the sergeant. ”

” I asked him to hand over the cell tub, and he rushed across and hurled it at my head. It hit the door as I closed It. ”

To Mr. O’Neill, the constable said that he pulled out his baton before opening the cell door.

(Proceeding.)

Police disappointed at close of Operation Tortoise

It would have been difficult to escape a random breath test in Wagga across the Easter long weekend.

It follows a Highway Patrol crack down on fatigue, drink and drug-driving.

With thousands hitting the roads for the holiday, Riverina police conducted more than 6600 random breath tests across four days.

These numbers come at the close of Operation Tortoise, with double-demerits in force until midnight on Monday.

Despite the low number of drivers busted drink driving, acting-Senior Sergeant Stephen Sivewright said the behaviour of drivers across the region had been disappointing.

“The message isn’t getting out there,” Sergeant Sivewright said. “People are still speeding.”

He said road users continued to put the lives of their passengers and other people in danger, with more than 200 drivers issued speeding fines.

A further 25 infringements were issued for not wearing seatbelts and 308 drivers were busted for other traffic offences.

“People shouldn’t have to die for drivers to listen,”  Sergeant Sivewright said. “This should be a wake-up call.”

His words follow the tragic death of an elderly driver on a Riverina road, near Jindera, on Monday morning.

This death brought the number of fatalities on Riverina roads to six this year.

“That’s ridiculously high,” Sergeant Sivewright said. “Up until March 28, there were 59 fatalities on state roads – a definite increase on last year.”

The story Shock follows number of speeding drivers busted on Riverina roads first appeared on The Daily Advertiser.

Ten drivers busted drink driving across Wagga

Police say the results of this year’s initiative to reduce the holiday road toll are concerning.

It follows Wagga Highway Patrol’s launch of Operation Safe Arrival on December 22.

Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Sivewright on Tuesday said local officers, combined with resources from Sydney, had already performed thousands of random breath tests across Wagga.

The Highway Patrol chief said of more than 8520 tests, ten drivers had been caught drink driving.

In addition, Sergeant Sivewright said 225 drivers had been fined for speeding across the region, which was more than half the combined number of traffic-related offences, during that period.

“We are concerned about the 10 drink driving offences,” Sergeant Sivewright said. “We’d like that to be zero.”

Double demerits will apply from Friday, December 22 with all Traffic and Highway Patrol Command staff on duty until New Year.

Sergeant Sivewright urged Riverina drivers to stick to the speed limit, to make a plan-b and to get to their destination safely.

Highway Patrol want you to survive the drive home this Christmas | Video

Wagga’s Highway Patrol force are gearing up for the busy Christmas period with Operation Safe Arrival kicking off today.

Double demerits will apply from Friday, December 22 with all Traffic and Highway Patrol Command staff on duty until New Year performing random breath tests, mobile drug testing, speed enforcement and vehicle and driver compliance checks.

Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Sivewright said the Riverina cluster will be boosted by additional resources from Sydney.

“We’ll have all our vehicles out on the roads during the day and night time so the public can see us.”

The Wagga Command is made up of 20 officers and nine vehicles.

“With more people going away, wanting to get there, they can get distracted by their mobile phones, we’ll be out there trying to deter people from committing offences,” Sergeant Sivewright said.

“For those travelling long distances we hope they have had at least eight hours sleep before they begin their journey, and stop every two hours or when tired.

“Personal responsibility is the key to road safety in NSW. We urge those on our roads over the school holidays, Christmas and the New Year to help us keep everyone safe on NSW roads.”

Last Christmas and New Year period saw 40 people die on Australian roads, up from 34 the year before.

NSW was the worst state for fatalities, claiming 12 of the dead.

An Object of Suspicion.

A Mudgee Visitor’s Experience

On Friday the Mudgee police received word that a burglary had been committed near Wellington, and a description of the bold bad men was sent here by wireless telegraphy or some other up-to-date means.

The local suppressors of crime and bad language were soon all alert, and on Friday evening Constable Tully and James Gillies McDonald, the well known tracker, had their cunning constabulary optics on a couple of strangers who had driven over from Wellington that day and were stopping at a local hotel.

The rules and regulation provide that a constable shall always act with caution, and therefore Constable Tully did not rush affairs but engaged a room at the hotel and, presumably, sat up all night with one eye on the back door and the other on the front.

The name of the unconscious object of constabulary cunning was Mr. W. V. Bradley, the representative of the Two Bays Nursery Co., Melbourne.

After consuming a very gratifying breakfast he strolled outside his hotel, and was accosted by a man who was a stranger to him, and asked him some tricky little questions as to who he was, where he came from, and where he contemplated going to. Mr. Bradley stated that he was going to the post office, and the stranger at once revealed his official identity, and intimated that the requirements of justice necessitated that the visitor should be searched, for he was suspected of being mixed up in a burglary near Wellington.

Mr. Bradley said he had not the least objection to being searched, and informed the constable that his Gladstone bag was upstairs and contained the usual assortment of clothes soiled and otherwise, and that he had £60 in notes in his pocket, and a fully loaded revolver, which he playfully introduced to the notice of the guardian of the peace.

Constable Tully carefully examined the socks, bicycling knickers, etc., and then sadly abandoned the case as far as Mr. Bradley was concerned. So far as we have heard the genuine desperado has not yet been arrested, but the police are keeping a very wide eye open.

James Gillis McDonald A well known bush tracker, was born at Laheys Creek on 26-1-1872.

His mother being Eliza McNabb, and his father Thomas McDonald, who was employed by James Falconer as a shepherd.

Sergeant Buckley of Rylstone, his reputation began the day he arrived, for he had brought his milking cow with him.

During the trip the cow produced twin calves, one of which he gave to his tracker Jimmy McDonald, who owned a rogue cow.

Jimmys cow was the terror of the town and was nothing short of a blooming menace, always breaking into everyone’s garden. Yet she fulfilled a much needed role by providing milk for Jimmys extensive brood.

Although Jimmy was a full blood Aborigine his wife was not, and their twelve happy children came in varied colours.  Jim could see the humour when he chuckled, with my kiddies, it’s never any use killing a fowl, it would have to be a centipede because everyone begs for a leg.

NSW Aboriginal Trackers James McDonald was the tracker at Wollarah when the Governor brother were on the run. He lived in a four room hut in the police paddock. James knew Jimmy and didn’t shoot him when he had the chance.

Interview with Malcolm McDonald 2012.

Jimmy once fired a warning shot at James which struck his saddle, the children later played with saddle when growing up.

The funeral of Sergeant John Windsor at the Christ Church Cathedral.
The funeral of Sergeant John Windsor at the Christ Church Cathedral.

THERE was a potent message from the funeral yesterday of popular former Grafton policeman Sgt John Windsor … get your skin checked regularly for skin cancers.

Sgt Windsor’s two daughters Alison and Jenny told a packed Christ Church Cathedral their father, a devoted and loving family man, had died after a long battle with melanoma.

“We urge you all to see a doctor and get your skin checked,” they told the congregation.

They described their father as a simple man who enjoyed the simple things in life, someone who didn’t like crowds and never wanted to be the centre of attention.

“He was dedicated to his friends, his family and work,” they said.

“He always had a friendly g’day.”

They said he was a man of limited fashion sense, who wore trademark check shirts for 30 years and an Akubra hat, and loved to travel – with a particular fascination for Queensland.

He also had a deep appreciation of food and a soft spot for animals.

“He was a gentle soul who lived his life with integrity and honour,” they said.

Many of his former colleagues in the NSW Police Force, including many who are now retired, attended yesterday’s service and spoke of his dedication to serving people.

Coffs Clarence Local Area Police Commander Mark Holahan said that when he first arrived at the Grafton Police Station as a young constable in 1987, Sgt Windsor was a calming influence.

“He retired on January 9, 2009, having spent 37 years and 162 days in the service of New South Wales,” he said.

“Rest in peace, old friend, you have served your community to the best of your ability. Vale John Windsor.”

Another of his former colleagues, Senior Sergeant Chris Tuite, gave a list of words to describe Sgt Windsor.

He said he was loving, particularly of his two daughters and wife Margaret, his father Keith and the police.

“He loved coming to work and you could set your clock by him,” he said.

He was kind and never had a harsh word against anyone.

He was respectful and showed this with his dealings with his superiors and women.

And he was generous.

“He was always a gentleman in the true definition of the word,” Sen Sgt Tuite said.

Sgt Windsor was 58.

Police honour their comrades

Community members joined Limestone Coast police at a ceremony at the Mt Gambier Police Station on Thursday for the National Police Remembrance Day.

The presence of riderless horse at a ceremony at the Mt Gambier Police Station on Thursday was a time-honoured way of paying respects to the fallen.

Such gestures have been hallmarks of military and State funerals since the nineteenth century.

Local officers arranged for the riderless horse with boots reversed in its stirrups to be part of the annual religious ceremony to mark National Police Remembrance Day.

The 16-year-old grey horse called “Limelight” was formerly a part of the South Australian Police Mounted Cadre.

In retirement, “Limelight” was brought to Mt Gambier by its former rider Senior Constable Stephanie Cooper.

After nine years with the Mounted Cadre, Senior Constable Cooper is now on general police duties in Mt Gambier.

She rode another horse “Star of Courage” to the ceremony while “Limelight” was led to it by Constable Barb Bushell.

The two horses stood guard while community members and police honoured those who had given their lives in the line of duty.

The wreath layers at the 45 minute ceremony included local resident Maureen Matheson.

She laid a floral tribute in memory of her eldest son, Warren John Matheson, who was killed while on police duty in Adelaide in 1982.

At the time of his death, he was a 24-year-old married father with an infant son and daughter.

He was laid to rest in the Carinya Gardens Cemetery in Mount Gambier.

Mrs Matheson said another young officer from this region was killed in the same motor vehicle collision which claimed the life of her son.

“He was 22-year-old Constable Matthew Payne, of Rendelsham.

“Matthew was not supposed to be on traffic duties with Warren on this day but his regular partner could not make this shift.

“Matthew is buried at Rendelsham.

“I have been coming to these annual ceremonies for several years.

“One has been held at Warren’s grave while another took place at the Rendelsham cemetery.

“In recent years, we have been holding the ceremony here at Mt Gambier,” said Mrs Matheson.

The other wreath layers were representatives of the Limestone Coast Police Local Service Area, SA Police Legacy, Mt Gambier City Council, District Council of Grant, MFS, SA Ambulance Service and the Rotary Club of Mt Gambier West.

A wreath was also placed on Constable Payne’s grave later in the day by Sergeant Richard Murphy, of the SA Police Legacy.

The master of ceremonies in Mt Gambier was Sergeant Andy Stott while the prayers were led by Police Chaplain and Mt Gambier Anglican parish priest, the Reverend Canon Brian Ashworth.
