We were delighted to present the inaugural Ross Lambert Perpetual award this year to Dominique Melbourn.
This award is presented for outstanding contribution in representing NCCSLSC as the best individual junior competitor at carnivals.
At State Championships 2020 Dom won gold for each of her individual water events of Swim, Iron, and Board, just managing to stay ahead of her team mate Olivia Clues.
Dom has consistently been at the pointy end in Surf Life Saving events. Gracious in defeat and magnanimous in success, Dom is polite and thoughtful to others. And when not in the water at carnivals, she is on the ropes supporting our beachies or cheering on her team mates, who altogether make an incredible team. Whilst this is presented to one individual it is equally a reflection of the exceptional peer, club, and coaching support at NCCSLSC.
.
This award is in honour of Ross Lambert, Nippers President in the 1987-88 season.

Man said to have hindered police

SYDNEY, Friday. — A teaching brother pleaded not guilty in Central Court today to a charge of hindering police who had arrested a drunken Aboriginal woman in Sydney on November 30 last year.

Before the court was Brother Thomas Charles Hammerton, 39, a De La Salle teaching brother attached to the St Vincent’s Presbytery, Redfern.

Sergeant Ross Lambert said that as the woman was being placed in the police van, Brother Thomas had tried to grab, her. He said that Brother Thomas had yelled,”Watch the racist police.

Watch. Watch”.

He told Brother Thomas to go away but he lunged again and tried to take hold of the woman.

Brother Thomas said he had told the police to treat the woman with dignity and respect.

He said the police pushed and shoved the woman like a “sack of potatoes”.

He said he had then said to them, “Hey, are you a racist or what?”

Mr Berman, SM, adjourned the hearing until March 16 and allowed Brother Thomas to go free without bail.

The Truth Saved Him From Gaol

The fact that he had told the truth with regard to his seeking work saved a man from being gaoled for vagrancy when he came before the Goulburn Police Court yesterday.

He is William Roy Carroll, of no fixed address, and he was sentenced to the rising of the Court.

Constable D. Dulgin told the court of the circumstances in which he had found the defendant in a shed in Back Street.

Other police gave supporting evidence and explained to Mr. A. J. Paton, S.M., who was on the Bench, the conditions under which track rations and relief are granted.

Carroll told Mr. Paton that at the time of his arrest he was genuinely intending to leave Goulburn and find work.

He said he had a suitcase which contained 9 shirts, three hats, a pair of boots, a pair of shoes, a frying pan and “accessories,” and other clothing.

The case was adjourned to check up on his statements and later the suitcase was produced in court.

Constable W. Huff also tendered a letter which indicated that Carroll had sought work at the Government Employment Office.

Mr. Paton said he would give him a chance to get out of Goulburn and threatened to give him a stiff sentence if he came along again on a similar charge.

Three Months’ Gaol For Speeding

SYDNEY, Monday.

A driver of a semi-trailer which travelled up to 70 m.p.h. from Mascot to Wollongong, pursued by police, was to-day gaoled for six months.

The driver of the truck, Peter Justin Gleeson, 28, of no fixed address, also ‘had his licence cancelled for three years.

Mr. Avery, S.M., in Central Court, imposed the maximum sentence for the charge of dangerous driving.

Constable Huff, of 21 Division, said the semi-trailer at times veered to the wrong side of the road, forcing traffic to pull up and pedestrians to scatter for safety, while the police car was almost forced on to the foot path.

A road block was put up at Wollongong, but nine miles on the Sydney side, Gleeson lost control of the semi-trailer and ran off the road. Gleeson was found lying in the bush 60 yards away.

Man for trial over mother’s death

SYDNEY: A 22-year-old man was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of murdering his mother.

Mr Mark Frederick Yarad, unemployed, of Cronulla, appeared in the City Court, charged with having murdered Mrs Alma Isabella Yarad at Cronulla on March 15.

Mr Goldrick, SM, found that a prima facie case against Mr Yarad had been established, and committed him to the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court.

The man’s father said his son had undergone a complete personality change after leaving school, and had been abusive toward his mother

Mr Callile John Yarad, a bookmaker, said his son had been a perfect person until he was 18, being a fine scholar.

After finishing school his son would return home for a while and then go off again, and would never keep in touch with his parents, he said. During this time he had found his son had been taking “pot”.

Mr Yarad said a parcel, which he thought contained a gun, was delivered to his son at their home on the morning of the alleged murder.

That afternoon Mr Yarad sen. had gone out and when he returned he found the police at his house.

Detective-Sergeant W. Huff told the court he had gone to the house and had seen Mr Mark Yarad.

Sergeant Huff said Mr Yarad told him, “I have shot my mother — she’s inside”.

WEDDINGS

PAFF — BURNETT

At the wedding reception of Miss Alma Burnett, and Mr. Oscar Paff, on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 5th, the wedding cake was cut with a Samurai sword, which the bride’s brother, Mr. Max Burnett (ex-RAAF) had brought back with him from New Britain.

Alma is the second eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Burnett, of Macquarie St., Cowra, and the groom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Paff, of Krambach.

The ceremony was performed at St. John’s Church of England, by the Ven. Archdeacon Mirrington.

The bride, who was given away by her father, was attired in a white gown of self patterned heavy cloque crepe, featuring a heart shaped neckline, ruffled bodice and sleeves, with a very full skirt, ending in a train.

Her tulle brocaded veil which was loaned to her for the occasion, was held in place with a halo of white camellias. She carried a shower bouquet of arum lilies and freezias.

Her two sisters, Mrs. V. Cooke, of Bathurst, and Mrs. B. Rodwell, of Cowra, were matrons of honor.

The former was dressed in a blue crepe gown, the skirt of which was very full. She added a shoulder length veil, held in position with a curvette of roses, and carried a bouquet of roses, ranunculus and mignonette.

The latter wore a dusty pink crepe frock with cape sleeves and a full le plum and skirt. Her matching shoulder veil was held in place with a curvette of sweet peas and carnations. She chose similar flowers for her bouquet.

The only jewellery worn by the bride was a string of pearls, while the attendants wore pendants with matching ear-rings.

Mr. Max Burnett, brother of the bride, carried out the duties of best man, and Mr. Vic Cooke, the bride’s brother-in-law, was groomsman.

A reception was held at the Lyric Hall, where the guests were received by Mrs. Burnett, who was dressed in black, with a shoulder spray of tiger lilies. She was assisted by Mrs. Paff, who was also in black relieved with pink.

Chairman at the breakfast was Mr. Hoodless, uncle of the bride. The three-decker wedding cake was made and decorated by Mr. Doug Jackson.

Soloist at the wedding was Miss Beryl Thomas, who sang ‘I’ll Walk Beside You.’

An amusing feature at the wedding was that Constable Jim Imber, friend of the groom, who was in the vicinity when the bride’s bouquet was being thrown, caught the bouquet.

The honeymoon is being spent on the North Coast.

Their future home will be at Cowra, where the groom is a member of the Cowra Police Force.

Among the guests at the wedding of Miss Alma Burnett and Mr. Oscar Paff were Mr. and Mrs. Hoodless, of Ginjelli; Mr. and Mrs. Con’n. of Hill End; Mrs. Paff and Miss Coral Paff, of Taree; Mrs. Kimm, of Hill End; and Mr. Kevin Rodwell, of Parkes. — ‘Cowra Guardian.’

SYDNEY, Thursday: An Orange District Court jury tonight awarded a man £200 damages against a Spring Hill police constable, Oscar Manning Paff, for assault.

The man, Brian Vincent Melville, 34, of Orange, sued Paff for damages, alleging that Paff had punched and kicked him on February 6.

He said he spent five days in hospital and five weeks at home recovering from his injuries.

Paff told the Court that Melville was drunk, and injured himself when he fell on the road after throwing a punch.

Also before the court was Mr Woods’ brother, James, 24, of the same address, who was charged with illegally possessing car grills. Both men are labourers.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kingsley Weller told the court that “far more serious charges” would be made against the brothers.

The alleged offences took place at Doonside yesterday, Sergeant Weller told Mr A. J. McKeowen, SM.

The alleged bribe had been made to Detective L. D. Hines of Blacktown Police.

Pleas were not taken.

Sergeant Weller said additional investigations were being carried out “in relation to several car matters”.

Both were allowed $300 bail and were remanded to appear at the same court on September 6.

I worked with Terry Rigby at the Royal National Park. He did visitor services and compliance work for National Parks for quite a few years.

Always in such good spirits and was very much liked by all. He went out of his way to help everyone – colleagues and park visitors. Very sad to hear of his passing.

Cheers,

Sonia Roberts

Peter MacRae I worked with Terry on 24/1 Ford F100 Truck, in the 1970's. One of the best partners I had, 'A gentleman & a Scholar of life'. He always wanted to work with me since I once, continually, threw a 6ft 4in Russian back into the 'Dock', during his charging, everytime he stepped out of the dock. A fellow NSW Police cyclist, whom I first met in 1967, when we were patrolling the streets of Paddington,re illegal Parking and other offences during the Royal Easter Show... Terry introduced me to 'MUM"..a "Well to do" elderly lady that lived opposite Centennial Park, in a Mansion, and just loved to entertain young leather clad, NSW Police cyclists. 'Mum', had an ongoing, all day, lunch, in her backyard, for all Police cyclists, so that she catered for all 'Meal Breaks'............ God Bless you 'Mum" for your kindness, and revealing to us the joys of 1930's hospitality...! Praying for you Terry..and when you arrive in the Promised land please pray for me..Love you, Mate... Below is a Pic Of Terry Rigby with Dana Jennings 2008 at Bulli Pass Lookout..!

Ulysses Club St. George Sutherland Branch

Vale Terry Rigby

It is with sadness that I inform members of the passing of Terry Rigby.

Terry has been a stalwart of the Branch and a person who was always there with a friendly smile and a “how are you mate” whenever you saw him.

He is someone I held in high regard and I felt in awe of the way he continued his battle with cancer and fought so hard during his illness.

Terry was someone to respect and admire.

Due to the Covid restrictions there are limitations on the number of people who can attend and this is the latest information on Terry’s

Memorial Service.

The Service will be at South Chapel Woronora Cemetery on Monday 31st August at 12.00pm

  • At the request of the family no motorbikes.
  • There are 47 people to be allowed in the Chapel and this is by invitation ONLY.
  • There are15 spots for Branch members outside of the chapel on  the forecourt and must be requested from Terry’s                               daughter Sharnay on her mobile ( contact Cal if you need the number ) by 12.00pm Friday 28th August if you wish to attend.
  • People attending from the Branch are requested to wear Branch clothing as a mark of respect.
  •  Anyone planning to attend get there early.
