NT policeman drowns in car accident

DARWIN: A policeman drowned at the weekend after the patrol car he was travelling in rolled off a wharf at Darwin.

Police said yesterday that Detective Sergeant Ian Bradford, 37, and his partner were patrolling the Old Fort Hill wharf at 11.30pm on Saturday when their patrol car rolled off the edge of the dark pier.

Sergeant Bradford‘s partner, who was driving, struggled back to shore and was treated for shock and lacerations.

Police divers recovered Sergeant Bradford‘s body just after midnight. He is survived by his wife, Dianne, and three children.

Police said a report on the incident had been submitted to the Coroner.

Detective Sergeant Second Class Ian BRADFORD was a passenger in a CIB vehicle which was patrolling the Darwin wharf area just prior to midnight on the 28 January 1984.

The Wharf was being extended to join up with another section and was incomplete.

The vehicle went over the edge between the two wharves.

The driver, Detective Jon HAYES, managed to get out of the sinking car, and although he dived down several times to try to extricate the passenger, Detective Bradford was knocked unconscious and drowned inside the police vehicle.

May Elaine LOOMES death notice

Updated 17 July 2023.

May May and Brian Forever Rest In Peace.

Brian LOOMES

from his FB page:

Your friendly relaxed Civil Funeral Celebrant.

Brian was a Civil Marriage Celebrant for 25 years and is a Justice of the Peace.

I have retired as a Marriage Celebrant, however I am continuing to conduct Funeral Ceremonies and consider myself to be a full time professional celebrant.

As a funeral celebrant I have officiated at funeral and memorial services for many years.

I like to call these “Life Centred Ceremonies” as the whole service including the eulogy must recognize, pay tribute to and celebrate the life of the deceased.

The service should offer comfort, support and a sense of comfort to those who are mourning the loss of someone who was special to them.

I can provide assistance with preparing the service, the eulogy and advice regarding funeral arrangements.

Brian can help you through all aspects and enjoys helping people and prides himself on paying special attention to detail at all times to create a personal ceremony that reflects the feelings, beliefs and personality of the deceased with a totally professional relaxed manner.

please feel free to contact Brian for more information. View the the many thank you messages from satisfied families

Man on harbouring charge

SYDNEY: A South Australian man, described by police as a male prostitute, appeared in Sydney’s Central Court of Petty Sessions yesterday, charged with having harboured a prison escaper, Mr Raymond John Denning.

Mr Margarete Ngatai, 31, unemployed, of Para Hills, South Australia, appeared before Mr Henry, SM, wearing a maroon dress, red high-heel shoes and a bright-red-satin jacket.

He is charged with having knowingly harboured Mr Denning, an escaped prisoner, between April 6 and 21 at Nelson Bay and in Sydney.

Sergeant Brian Loomes, prosecuting, said that Mr Ngatai had accompanied Mr Denning to South Australia where they had lived together for three weeks. They had later returned to NSW.

Mr Ngatai had then returned to South Australia where he had been arrested last Wednesday. He was extradited yesterday to NSW.

Mr J. Bettons, for Mr Ngatai, said he had been told by Mr Ngatai that he had contacted police when he had discovered that the person he was living with was Mr Denning.

Mr Henry refused bail and adjourned the matter for mention to May 8.

Mr Denning is still at large.

Lotto copy swallowed, say police

SYDNEY: A man who falsely claimed for a Lotto win of $1.25 million, had swallowed the evidence – a carbon copy of the coupon – police alleged in Sydney Central Court of Petty Sessions yesterday.

Mr Rayson Light, 37, clerk, of East Sydney, was charged with having attempted to obtain $1.25 million on December 17, 1980, by having pretended he had submitted a valid winning Lotto entry.

He was also charged with having forged a Lotto coupon with intent to defraud, at Darlinghurst, on December 15 and with having uttered a forged coupon on December 17.

He was charged yesterday at Chatswood with having uttered a forged coupon. No pleas were entered.

Sergeant Brian Loomes, prosecuting, alleged that while being interviewed by detectives at Chatswood yesterday morning, Mr Light had stolen and then swallowed a carbon copy of the Lotto coupon relating to his false claim.

Mr G. Penny, for Mr Light, said the matter was still the subject of litigation in the Supreme Court.

He said his client had been born in Canton, China, and had come to Australia in 1975.

Mr R. Henry, SM, allowed him conditional bail.

The funeral for former Grafton Ghosts football coach, Ken Rowlands, will be held at Ballina, Friday 16/12/2022 – 2pm.
Ken served with the NSW Police, stationed in Grafton 1966-1973 and he was a regular visitor to the Grafton July Racing Carnival for many years.
He is survived by wife Val ( Valda ), his children and their partners, Sue-Anne ( decd ), Rodney & Janet Rowlands, Julie & Michael Jameson, Carla (decd) and Andrew & Kassy Rowlands, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Former husband of Joan Jolley.

Ken ROWLANDS

This Member also had a football career with Canterbury and the Newtown Jets.

He first started out with Randwick Rugby Union Club making First Grade in 1955 as a winger.

In 1958 he turned his hand to Rugby League playing for Canterbury Bankstown – Berrys.

Newtown Blue Bags in 1961 and played two seasons.

1963 he applied for, and obtained, the position of Captain / Coach with Dapto in the Illawarra Group League comp.

This Team made the Semi Finals in 1965 ( being the highest that Team has ever achieved ).

1968 – Grafton Ghosts at the Captain / Coach.

Ken Served his National Service ( NASHOS ) for the mandatory 18 months but I have no details of that Service other than his Service number may be A212745 as an Aircraftsman with the Air Force.

Dog rewarded for past tricks

A LOCAL Dog is proud to have received a reward for his past tricks.

A LOCAL Dog is proud to have received a reward for his past tricks.

This 73-year-old Dog once ran, passed a ball and tackled, too.

Ken Rowlands, from Lennox Head, is the former Canterbury Bankstown Rugby League Club player who on April 1 was one of about 200 past footballers given a medallion to mark their service to the team.

Ken played about 70 first-grade games for the Bulldogs from 1958 to 1961 ? but they were called the Berries back in those days.

He played in the centres and on the wing.

At the official function held before the Bulldogs’ game at Telstra Stadium, he was rubbing shoulders with rugby league greats Dr George Peponis, Steve Mortimer, Chris Anderson, Terry Lamb and Graeme Hughes.

“It was a wonderful day,” he said.

“It was like a reunion.”

Ken had just finished his probationary term in the NSW police force when he was approached by Ken ‘Tank’ Charlton to join the club.

He was 24 years old.

Ken was playing rugby union with Randwick at the time, and had taken up his first posting to the Belmore ‘call box’ located at the suburban railway station.

He made the switch to league and went on to play with the Berries and the Newtown Jets.

Meanwhile, Ken’s son, Andrew, is currently playing professional rugby union with the Basingstoke club in the United Kingdom.

Andrew is a former Ballina junior, and has been playing in the UK for the past two years.

WINDY GALE
Another sailor’s ship has set sail.
His friends all knew him as Windy Gale.
A family man who cared for his mates.
As a seaman, he had all that it takes.
Alan served his country but never stood down.
A more compassionate man could not be found.
He was always willing and loyal to a tee,
And he never forgot his love for the sea.
He was a tireless worker who gave his all,
To any ex-service folk within his beck and call.
His tribute to the fallen is quite legendary.
Posting their details so they’re here for posterity.
Alan will be missed by all those who knew him.
But we know to which port, he will be sailing.
All we can do now is pray for fair weather.
Till the time comes when we can all be together.
Bill Charlton.
A mate.
4/12/2022

This morning I had a visit from Ray James and Alan Gale who are members of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia – Macarthur Sub Branch.
Like myself, both Ray an Alan are also ex NSW Police Officers.
They presented Bujustu with a certificate of appreciation for sponsoring the Vietnam Veterans Macarthur Branch.
I try to do around 7K a year in sponsorships, mainly to Macarthur community groups, schools and sports teams. This is one cause I did not hesitate for a second to sponsor.

My deepest sympathies to Lucy and family. Keith was a true gentleman and a wonderful man. He was a real character and made everyone laugh and feel special. I will always appreciate and remember his sage advice not only about policing but about life in general. He was a one of a kind and he will be deeply missed by many people.
Vale Byrnesy.
Tony Wheeler
Condolences to Lucy and all of of Keith’s family.
Keith and I met at the Qld Academy in 1990. I was about ten tears younger than Byrnesy, but he, Martin Cook and I were probably still senior to most of the other probationaries, so a bond developed between us.
(Bruce Willett will have memories of that I’m sure.)
As a live-in at the Academy, probably the highlight of most days was starting by sharing breakfast in the canteen with Byrnsey and Cooky. The “entertainment” was usually provided by Probationary Keith Byrnes.
As I’ve heard from Bruce today, and Liz, Keith was a story teller. Embellishment was sometimes apparent, but mostly it added to the mood and enjoyment of the story.
I only saw Keith once since Academy days. How I wish there were more times. Bruce, you did a great job. Have a good time up there in the big pub Byrnsey!
Maureen &Joe Fawcett
To Lucy and family Joe and I were so very sad to hear of Keith’s passing, he always had a smile and a laugh when we met him in the park at Evans Head what a joy it was to know both of you we never did finish that last game of euchre.
Last year nearly to the day we visited Keith at Fern Bay you had to go to your band that day what a great memory that will be for Joe and myself…Sending gods blessing you and your wider family.
Maureen and Joe
