Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 – 1995),

Friday 18 March 1977, page 10

Policeman gets compensation

SYDNEY, Thursday. — A police officer who still has fragments of a thief’s bullet in his body, was awarded $4,000 compensation today in Central Criminal Court.

Mr Justice Slattery awarded Senior Constable Graham Gerald Bishop, 35, of Ashfield, the maximum compensation under Section 437 of the Crimes Act.

Constable Bishop was shot at Narrandera in January, 1976, in an attempt to arrest an escaper, Mr Mark Robert Evans, 17.

The .22 rifle bullet struck Constable Bishop in the back of his left shoulder, chipping the shoulder-blade and fragmenting.

Mr Evans later pleaded guilty to five charges, including one of maliciously wounding Constable Bishop with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and last November was sentenced to seven years’ jail for that offence.

Mr Justice Slattery read reports from four doctors which said it was likely Constable Bishop‘s future ” would be associated with increasing pain “.

My deepest condolences to Bruces’ daughters, family and friends.

You were respected and a great bloke to work with on the truck whilst working GDs at Wollongong back in the 1980s.

And you loved your aluminium tea pot.

8 September 2016
Hi Everyone
Just a big thank you for all those who sent me birthday wishes yesterday. Seeing the names of my former police mates brought back good memories – a real blast from the past. Thanks to all my family and relos also.
My wife and I are still living in Corrimal in the house we brought 44 years ago. In 2013 by pure chance I found out I had kidney cancer. Not many complications – no kemo – just a key hole operation to remove the kidney and I was back in business. I really dodged a bullet though.
I am still playing competition squash twice a week. Even I can’t believe I am still playing 52 years after I started in 1964. I walk 5ks every day of the year and surf at Towradgi Beach every good day in the summer. I have been blessed with good health. Life’s good.
For those former cops who remember my daughters ( a few lifts home in the PD after a late night) they are all going well and all three are Flight Attendants with Qantas. Not the cops for them.
To Terry Gilchrist : the pink bats are still working fine.
Thanks again and I hope to see you at the one of the RPA meetings.
Cheers. Bruce

There are THREE people with the surname ANDERSON in this Class.  M.L. ANDERSON # 11939 / P.J. ANDERSON # 12038 / Cadet N.T. ANDERSON # 12083.  I can not be 100% certain ( until further informed ) which ANDERSON is referred to ( in the Back Row ) on the original name sheet –  thus I will mention them in this note but not in the photo.

There are two people with the surname of IRWIN in this Class.  C.A. IRWIN # 12024 & C.R. IRWIN # 11933 ( Cadet ).  I can not be 100% certain ( until further informed ) if C.A. IRWIN is in the 2nd row or the 3rd row.  For the purpose of this photo – I have chosen the 2nd row for C.A. IRWIN # 12024 ( because the faces can’t be distinguished )

There are two people with the surname of MORRIS in this Class.  Peter MORRIS # 11948 & R.R. MORRIS ( Cadet ) # 11936.  I can not be 100% certain ( until further informed ) if Peter is in the front row or the 2nd row.  For the purpose of this photo – I have chosen the front row for Peter ( because the faces can’t be distinguished )
