On 23 June, 1956 the sergeant was involved in the violent arrest of an offender at the Commercial Hotel, Junee. During the incident the sergeant suffered injuries to his kidneys which subsequently led to a number of operations and ongoing medical treatment for many years afterward.

On the morning of 14 April, 1962 Sergeant Cavanagh, then the Officer In Charge of the Morisset Police Station, collapsed on duty and was conveyed to the Newcastle Hospital. He remained in a semi-coma until he sadly passed away a week later. The cause of death was kidney failure caused by his injuries in 1956.

R. E. Cavanagh of Junee was promoted from Constable 1st Class to Senior Constable around 24 December 1954 as advertised in The Sydney Morning Herald, Friday 24 December 1954 on page 3 of 12.

The sergeant was born on 15 March 1915 and joined the New South Wales police Force on 25 August, 1939. At the time of his death he was stationed at Morisset.

My deepest condolences to Bruces’ daughters, family and friends.

You were respected and a great bloke to work with on the truck whilst working GDs at Wollongong back in the 1980s.

And you loved your aluminium tea pot.

Hi Everyone
Just a big thank you for all those who sent me birthday wishes yesterday. Seeing the names of my former police mates brought back good memories – a real blast from the past. Thanks to all my family and relos also.
My wife and I are still living in Corrimal in the house we brought 44 years ago. In 2013 by pure chance I found out I had kidney cancer. Not many complications – no kemo – just a key hole operation to remove the kidney and I was back in business. I really dodged a bullet though.
I am still playing competition squash twice a week. Even I can’t believe I am still playing 52 years after I started in 1964. I walk 5ks every day of the year and surf at Towradgi Beach every good day in the summer. I have been blessed with good health. Life’s good.
For those former cops who remember my daughters ( a few lifts home in the PD after a late night) they are all going well and all three are Flight Attendants with Qantas. Not the cops for them.
To Terry Gilchrist : the pink bats are still working fine.
Thanks again and I hope to see you at the one of the RPA meetings.
Cheers. Bruce

Rest In Peace My Brother S/C Vince Silvestro.

Vincent Anthony SILVESTRO 01 - NSWPF 22641 - Died June 2025
? with Vincent Anthony SILVESTRO ( right )

So when I started in 1999 as an ECLO, this man Vince Silvestro took me under his wing and for almost ten years we were joined at the hip.
He was the Crime Prevention Officer and back then the entire community knew this man.
Today I received that call, that he passed away on the weekend.
He was the funniest person I had ever met, he cared for community and had spent his career at Bankstown followed by Campsie.
Political Correctness wasn’t his thing and I think that’s what I loved about him, we would walk Haldon Street every single day, especially when Lakemba Police Station was still operational.
We got to know the community prior to any social media and had to do it all the good old fashioned way.
We used to get into trouble because we would say it how it is and these days you can’t breathe without offending someone, so we would get called into the Commanders Office and he would say “Shut the door” and we would face the music and I can assure you, we were innocent every time.
Then one day Sir calls us in and we shut the door automatically and sat down and the Commander says, “why did you close the door” And Vince looks at me and then says to Sir, “We don’t know how to talk to you with the door open”
Then one day he is in full uniform and a couple stop their car look at him and says “excuse me, do you know where the Police Station is ?
He looks his uniform up and down looks at the couple and says, “Does it look like i work at the railways ?
His photo was on one of the walls at the Police Academy and we would have students back in the day of work experience and he would make a point of walking the students to the photo, would point at it and say “that’s when they were after quality”
Thank you for being my Angel, when the relationship between police and community was at an all time low, but you inspired me to change all that and because of you my brother, your legacy will always live on.
Rest in peace Vinny and I will forever be grateful for everything you did for me and how you opened up so many doors for me, you enriched me just by being you and that is a quality that no longer exists.
Luv ya always Senior Constable Vince Silvestro. 💙
This photo was years after he retired.

Last week I was able to visit the grave of a former work mate and arguably the most influential Australian fishing lure maker.
Peter Douglas NEWELL was born at Werris Creek on 6 January 1945. After working with the CBA ( Commonwealth Bank of Australia ) and NSW Rail, he joined the NSWPF on 8 May 1972 and was attested on 19 June 1972 ( R/N 15338 ).
Peter retired on 12 March 1992 at the rank of Senior Constable. He passed away on 9 January 2009 and is buried at Tenterfield.
RIP old friend.
