Identi-kit picture of youth

Police constructed this Indenti-kit picture from descriptions of the boy said to have been seen in the area where Alan Redston was killed. The picture was issued to newspapers and television stations yesterday.

Police searching for the killer of six-year old Alan Geoffrey Redston issued yesterday an Identi-kit drawing of a youth wanted for questioning.

The identi-kit picture was shown on television yesterday and will continue to be shown during the week. The description was broadcast also.

The description of the youth, as given by police, is 13 to 15 years of age, about 5ft 6in tall, with blond hair which possibly falls over his forehead when untidy. He may have a scar over his left eye.

A statement issued by Canberra police said, “It is believed this person can assist inquiries and resides in or frequents the Woden Valley area.

“When last seen in the Curtin dump area on Monday, September 26, after school hours, he was described as wearing a white pullover or T-shirt with blue jeans and riding a bicycle which had a spade attached to it”.

Police see boys

Yesterday two boys whom police believe might identify this youth were interviewed in Canberra by Senior Constable John Schmidt of the modus operandi section, CIB, Sydney.

Constable Schmidt flew to Canberra for the day to help compile a composite picture of the youth from descriptions.

He said the identi-kit had been used successfully by NSW police investigating crimes. It contained 525 slides, and was capable of producing 62 billion variations of the human face.

The body of Alan Redston was found, bound and wrapped in a house coat and in pieces of felt, in the bed of Yarralumla Creek at Curtin on Wednesday morning. An autopsy showed he had died of strangulation caused by a rope looped around his neck and tied lo another rope binding his hands and feet.

Detective Constable B. W. Baulman, of Canberra, one of the 12 detectives on the case, said yesterday police had discontinued inquiries in the northern suburb of Hackett after questioning several boys.

Investigations in that area had failed to produce any new information.

Police have been working 18 hours a day interviewing children and householders. They have called at homes, and have stopped boys in the street in the Woden Valley seeking information. They attended Alan Redston’s funeral at the Methodist National Memorial Church, Forrest, on Saturday afternoon with several boys.

Police to blitz speeders

SYDNEY: Police will launch a second special Night Car patrol on the Pacific Highway for one week from today in a bid to prevent accidents on Australia’s notorious road.

The special patrol coincides with the first anniversary of the Sunliner coach crash at Cowper, near Grafton, in which 22 people died.

In a statement issued in Sydney, Chief Inspector Peter Johansen, of Northern Region headquarters, said increased patrols were to continue for the remainder of the year, as statistics gathered over several years had revealed an increase in serious crashes in the September December quarter.

The patrol would be on the road between 8.30pm and 4am, covering the area from Hexham, near Newcastle, to the Queensland border.

It would complement routine traffic police operations based in all major towns along the route. Chief Inspector Johansen said the Night Car patrols were necessary to maintain a constant high profile for police.

The first Night Car operation earlier this year travelled more than 3000km and booked 55 vehicles for exceeding the speed limit. This included 18 coaches, and two heavy vehicles were found travelling at 96 and 110km/h in a 60km/h zone near Coffs Harbour.

Random patrols to cut toll

SYDNEY: The number of fatal accidents on the Pacific Highway at Port Macquarie on the NSW mid-north coast has forced police to increase patrols and start community-awareness programs, a police spokesman said yesterday.

Since January, 27 people had been killed in 20 accidents in the area, compared with 18 deaths in the same period last year, operations support commander Chief Inspector Peter Johansen said in a statement.

He said a traffic policing system had been adopted from Tasmania using a computer to select random patrol points along the Pacific Highway.

“It has the potential to reduce the accident rate by up to 50 per cent,” he said.

Chief Inspector Johansen said the system aimed to undermine the security of drivers who thought they knew the “favourite radar spots”.

There will be a six-month trial of the new patrolling system by Port Macquarie police and if successful it could be extended to other areas.

Canberra Times (ACT : 1926 – 1995),

Wednesday 17 January 1990, page 3

Tough CB laws sought

SYDNEY: Tougher CB radio laws and increased police patrols were foreshadowed yesterday as a means of cutting the number of fatalities on NSW’s notorious Pacific Highway.

Senior police have recommended stiffer penalties for truck drivers who use CB radios to warn colleagues of police patrols on the state’s roads.

North region commander Chief Inspector Peter Johansen said many truck drivers were using the CBs to undermine police operations, particularly those involving marked car’s.

“I imagine the trucking industry has a code of ethics, but I don’t think it’s ethical when they divulge the position of marked cars to other drivers,” Inspector Johansen said.

“I would like to see-heavier fines for the illegal use of CB radios.”

Inspector Johansen said existing resources would be re-examined with a view to assigning more officers to the Lismore and Port Macquarie districts to boost patrols on the Pacific Highway.

Northern NSW was the scene of two recent crashes involving tourist coaches which claimed more than 50 lives.

A high school student has reportedly suffered an aneurysm after an attack by a schoolyard bully.

Josh Lawrie, 15, was allegedly attacked last Monday at St Dominic’s College, a Catholic school in Kingswood, in western Sydney, Channel 7 News reported.

He was reportedly walking through the schoolyard at lunchtime and was punched from behind by a student, who has since been suspended.

He continued to be punched while face-down on the ground until a friend intervened, Channel 7 News said.

“The next thing I remember is being in the bathroom washing my face,” Josh said.

A police spokesman confirmed that Josh and his mother went to St Mary’s police station on Tuesday, the day after the incident, to report “an assault which is alleged to have occurred at a local high school”.

“After reporting the matter to police, the teen was taken to hospital by his mother for scans and treatment of head injuries,” the spokesman said.

Channel 7 News reported that the school initially sent Josh home with his mother Lynda Lawrie, rather than calling an ambulance.

The aneurysm only surfaced during later scans.

The teenager has since undergone brain surgery and will spend his school holidays in hospital.

“I’ve … got a major brain problem and he’s just going to get a suspension for that,” Josh told Channel 7 News.

“He’s wrecked my life and he’ll only get a slap on the wrist.

“I don’t think that’s really good enough,” he said.

Channel 7 News reported that Josh has been told by doctors that he won’t be able to play sport again and will have to take blood thinning medication for the rest of his life.

Josh has been repeatedly bullied at the school and his parents told Channel 7 News that they believe the offender should be held accountable.

Ms Lawrie said that the first thing she was asked when she brought her son to the hospital was why he wasn’t taken in by an ambulance.

His father Richard Lawrie said “young fellas have to realise what they are doing” and think about the consequences of their actions.

A police spokesman said: “Police have obtained a number of statements and are now conducting inquiries into the matter.”

The school has not released an official comment but told Channel 7 News that there are two sides to the story.

Man ‘in fear for his life’

MELBOURNE: A 40-year old man who was ordered to be extradited to NSW yesterday was in fear for his life, his counsel told the City Court.

Detective Senior Constable John O’Hagan, of the NSW police armed-robbery squad, presented an application for the extradition of Mr Edwin John Middleton before Mr Danaher, SM.

The application stated that Mr Middleton was wanted to appear in court in Sydney charged with indictable offences.

Mr Tony Fisher, for Mr Middleton, said Mr Middleton thought his life “wouldn’t be worth tuppence” if he was sent to the Long Bay Jail central cells without police protection.

He feared he would be “got at” in the cells unless he had police protection.

Detective O’Hagan said provisions had been made for Mr Middleton’s safety.

Mr Danaher ordered Mr Middleton to be returned to Sydney in the custody of Detective O’Hagan.

John Crowley Wonderful man. Norm was one of the 128 NSW Police who served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNCIVPOL). For the past 30 years Norm was our passionate leader in fighting for justice for repatriation rights for our members (even though he had his own health problems). Army, Navy and Air Force automatically got it, (plus a generous daily allowance), whereas Police were not recognised (even though Cyprus was a War Zone and they worked side by side in Timor and the Solomons). Without Norm’s determination, expertise and passion we would not have stood a chance. We are forever grateful. To Norm’s wife Pam and the rest of his family we extend our deepest condolences. R.I.P. “True Blue” .
