Race with the stork
Three police constables ( half of the Merrylands force ) have just completed a race with the stork. Their three babies, all born in Parramatta Hospital, are boys.
Constable Wally Gibson narrowly won the event by two hours from colleague Constable George Marshall. Constable Laurie Shields came a poor third two weeks later. The three mothers and the boys ( all six of them ) are reported to ‘be fit and well’.

WRONGFUL ARREST
CLAIM AGAINST CONSTABLE REJECTED
A Parramatta District Court jury on Friday rejected a claim for damages against a police constable.
Laurence Beresford Tibbles, of Chetwynd Road, Guildford, sued Constable Laurence Shields, of Merrylands, for £1.000, alleging wrongful arrest, assault and malicious prosecution.
Mr. N. Nelson, for Tibbles, said his client had used insulting words when Constable Shields came to his house on December 20 last. Constable Shields had arrested Tibbles ” on the spur of the moment ” knowing that no offence was committed as the words had not been said in a public place, A magistrate in a lower Court hearing had dismissed the charge of insulting words on the grounds they could not be heard in public. and showed ” reckless indifference ” in arresting Tibbles.
Mr. S. Ross, for Shields, said the constable honestly believed an offence had been committed and had acted within his powers.
Judge Cameron Smith ordered Tibbles to pay costs.

BRIBE OFFER TO POLICE
At Parramatta Court of Petty Sessions on Monday a plaster cutter was fined £10 for trying to bribe a police officer, and £3 for
driving an unregistered motor cycle. . He is John Barry Kedwell, 18. of Hassell Street, Wetherill park. : Constable L. Shields, of Merrylands, said that when he and another constable stopped Kedwell, he pulled out some notes, and said. ‘Will £5 do between the pair of you?”

FLOOD RELIEF
PUBLIC MEETING AT GUILDFORD
Last Wednesday night a public meeting was convened by Guildford Sub-Committee of Holroyd Council’s Flood Victims’ Fund, held in Guildford School of Arts. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: President. Aid H. Maley; hon, secretary, Aid. O. D. Young; hon. treasurer. Mr. Bob Porter; Mr. Arthur Robinson, president Guildford R.S.L. and Constable Shields, of Guildford Citizens’ Boys Club, completed the executive committee.
After considerable discussion, general opinion of the meeting was that the best method to raise money was by conducting functions. It was decided that it was too late to commence a house to-house collection. Many suggestions were put forward. the three principal ones being, to approach Hoyts Theatres for use of the Regent Theatre for A Sunday entertainment, an evening at Mr. Charlie Davis’s private theatrette, and an open-air concert in Guildford Park.
If any persons have any suggestions that may assist the committee, they are invited to contact the sectary. Ald. O. D. Young, at Guildford Hardware Company, who. with the treasurer, Mr. Bob Porter, will also accept any donations.
