Prior to joining the NSW Police Cadet system, Barry was employed by the Post Master Generals’ Department, NSW, as a Junior Postal Officer, Fourth Division.

Upon joining the NSW Police Cadet system on Monday 15 August 1960 he was described as being:

5′ 9.75″ tall, 10 stone 7 lb in weight, Blue eyes, fair complexion and hair.  Being Baptist was left school in Year 2.

He was sent to the C.I.B. as a Cadet.
